WalMart M&P 15-22
I was in my local WalMart yesterday and they had an M&P 15-22 in the case. Price was $397 which, from what I can see, is a really good price. I know Academy's price is $429 (and they are usually out of them) and there's a LGS that wants $479.
I started to go ahead and get a couple (Christmas presents) but decided I better do a little research first.
What is the deal with the threaded barrels ? I've read that some have them and some don't. Are these different models or just older and newer versions of the same model ?
In my research, I read one thread that said the WalMart version is a non-threaded barrel and comes with a 10 round mag. Others say that theirs came with a 25 round mag.
I just want to make sure that I really am getting a good deal and not just buying a cheaper version of the gun.
Any input on the WalMart M&P 15-22 ? Thanks.

I can't say as to what WalMart's policy is regarding threaded barrels, but to the best of my knowledge, the non-threaded barrels are for states that still have AWB or that just don't allow for a threaded barrel. I would imagine that if you do not live in a ban state then they could get which ever model they wanted and it could just be that WalMart doesn't want to sell any type of firearm with "evil" features, regardless of whatever state a particular store is in....Just a thought.

The simplest thing to do is to get the S&W SKU for the rifle and verify the information on the S&W website.

I called WalMart and they said that it does not have a threaded barrel but does have a 25 round mag.
I'm not a tactical guy, my guns are all of the sporting variety. What good is a threaded barrel on this rifle, just to add a non-functioning suppressor ? It's just for show, right ?

Or real suppressors. The flash hider is kind of gimmicky, but it does protect the muzzle from damage.
Do the WM models have the blue springs?

Son went to a gun show in the Orlando area this past Saturday. He said he seen a 15-22, dressed, for $289.00, and passed on it. I don't know anymore about it, but I wish he had called me.
Local Walmart doesn't sell 15-22's.

That's a great price, I'd say get it! Here in CA, all these guns seem to have more inflated prices compared to regular price in free'er states.

On the M&P 15/22, you don't need a flash supressor or a compensator. Reason, not enough gas to do either. It is a Tacti-COOL look like image thing. Guys, and that's not a bad thing. Looks are important, we all do it, we want a cool looking tactical weapon. Some want more looks, other want performance, I say why not both! With smart shopping and good research, you can get both these days. So make your M&P 15/22 look what ever, just keep it pointed down range and at the zombies if and when they arrive...

Like I said, I'm planning on buying a couple for Christmas gifts. I will probably wait a little while just in case S&W offers a rebate or a free mag or something. Seems like they usually come up with something around Christmas time. Of course, I run the risk of WalMart selling out since they are the cheapest around. What to do. What to do.
Raven, I wonder if that AR-22 your son saw for $289 could've been a Mossberg ? That would be in line with what they sell for.

Local Walmart has the 15-22, but without the surpressor and with a 10 round clip for $397 (that's the size of a 25 round )
I assume the 25 round clip and supressor are legal in Kansas. Can anyone confirm that?

I got my MOE for $500 at Turners' but that's probably as good as it's going to get. Gun prices are definitely inflated here plus with AR-15 mags that are blocked, they're about $5+ more expensive than 20 or 30 rounders.

I need to recheck the mag that it comes with. I swear the guy said it was a 25 round but if they are 10 in Kansas, it might be a Walmart thing. Suddenly the $397 isn't such a good deal. They are $429 at Academy but if that's with a 25 round mag and a threaded barrel, that's where I'll be spending my money.

Here in IL, my friend and I both shopped all over (locally) before buying. I got a good price of $429 for the standard (no threaded barrel), he paid $500 for the A1 (threaded barrel). Both with 25 round magazines.
S&W does still make 2 different versions. It's not that one is the "older" version without a threaded barrel. M&P15-22<br>.22 LR - Smith & Wesson

my local store has these for $405, so that is not that spectacular a price. i am in a compliant state, so i don't think it has a threaded barrel and it came with 10 rnd mag.

Just because two or more states have a ban, doesn't mean it's the same. Some states may require stock pinning, 10rd mags, and no flash hider, another state with a ban may require just a 10rd mag but say nothing about flash hider or stock. Check with local/state laws before making a final decision...

$400.....That's fantastic price for the gun with a non-threaded barrel and a single 25-round magazine.
On sale, around here in central Indiana, the cheapest I've seen them is about $450. I think the price at the local gun show(s) is around $400.

Both local Academy's are always out of stock unless you want the pink version. LGS has them for $499 with threaded barrels; black with a 25 round mag and camo with 10 round mag. Bought one of each to support the LGS that has been in business for a long time. The owner takes care of us; the Wally world and Academy associates can't.

For a .22, the only two possible benefits are:
0) The possible addition of a silencer.
1) The addition of weight at the end of the barrel to reduce vibration, and thus improved shot-to-shot consistency. The weight can be in the form of a heavy flash suppressor or muzzle brake. A flash suppressor is not necessary on a .22 to suppress flash.
I bought a version of the 15-22 that did not have a threaded barrel, but a local gun shop did threaded it for me for less than $50.

It's fun reading these older threads.
The S&W, M&P AR15/22 are now going for $549.99- $599.99 & Higher.
That is when you can find one. I'm not aware of any being sold here with 10rd. mags. I would buy one if I could find one., Thanks B.O. & Bull, S. Biden.

Was just in the LGS here that caters mainly to LEOS and MIL, both active and retired. They had 10 15-22's with threaded barrel and 25 round magazine for $419. And they had a ton of ammo in all cals and gauges except for .22LR and .22Mag, and were a bit short on .38 special and .357 Mag. But had tons of all other calibers and at decent prices

Large distributors can "build" the rifle they want i.e. mine came from Gander Mountain no threaded barrel with 25 rd mag I didn't really care since it is basically eye candy on a 22. Maybe it is a "compliant" model that makes their inventory control easier but it was in GA which is still a free state. I also have a DPMS LR-308 that is not a standard catalog item, when I contacted DPMS they responded and advised it was a special "Distributor" build for GM only. It has the flash hider/standard mags etc. Walmart is certainly big enough to order a specific model with certain features added or deleted as they see fit. Might cut the cost by $3 and make them a bunch of money :-)

WalMart M&P 15-22
Just bought one a little while back for $430 from my LGS. Prices are good if you go to the right places. All the people raising their prices have lost my business when this all settles down

And what is the old saying "A bird in hand is better than two in the bush" you never know what tomorrow will bring "Feast or Famine" If you want them get them if they become plentiful so will magazines they cost less then $20.00 before the panic buying. You also have 9 months to see what comes down so you have to make that decision. As for threaded barrel it's the cool factor if your state allows never know when they will try to ban them in any state because they are soooo dangerous. Not sure as for the mag I bought a Sig M400 had flash suppresor and 30 round mag at Wal Mart.
