i have ear cups that i use w my handgun.

i cant use these w my 22 rifle as they get in the way when i put my head to the stock.

So I have ear plugs, but if others are at the range using their larger caliber handguns, these just won't so well.

Just wondering if anyone uses ear cups with their rifle, and if so, can you recommend a brand. I need something that would be much thinner than the ones i have.

I use howard leight impact sport muffs. They are low profile so fine when using a rifle.

They are electronic so can amplify range commands but cut off the microphones with anything above 85db. Another feature is the jack socket to plug your ipod/mp3 player in so you can listen to music while you shoot.

I payed £55 for mine. They look to be around 55-60$ on a certain auction site.

Im sure there will be ordinary muffs in low profile if you dont want electronic ones.

If you have plugs inserted correctly they have a higher noise reduction than muffs. I've got some electronic muffs but they don't get in the way with my set up. Scope/red dot is raised up some so my noggin is a little farther away from the stock. If you are cocking your head a bunch you might need to check your stance.

I use also foam plugs with the HL electronic muffs. For me it's a perfect combination of protection and being able to hear someone talking between firing.

I recently bought these ear muffs, too. They work great.

I'd been using non electronic ones for a long time. Was recently at a friend's private range. Between shots, another person and I were talking. He had the electronic muffs on and could hear me talk. I lifted one of my cups to hear him speak about the time someone on the other side of me fired a round. I went out with in days to get electronics muffs so that wouldn't happen to me again. They work great.

The impact sport muffs are very low profile so there is no interference problem with Rifle stocks.

I just recently went to visit my parents in MT. I took the muffs along in my carry on bag thinking I may run into issues with GSR and the scanners. No problems.

I use good quality foam earplugs when no big cal stuff is around. I add on a pair of Silencio thin ear muffs when I'm around anything bigger than 22 LR. Finally, I no longer go to indoor ranges when center fire pistol or rifle is in use - besides the noise, the concussion in a closed building is real distracting.

Most of our outdoor ranges are closed when it gets down to 30 deg F below zero.

Indoor ranges are pretty nice then.

Been training since 1996, with rifles, you need hear plugs. I have a very low profile head set but they don't offer much with the higher caliber rounds. I use the orange "X-treme", and there are fine for the 22lr.. believe me, I'm gonna be deaf when I get old, kinda glad I retired at 52, I may keep my hearing a tad longer... "Stop dancing up there".. see I hear things already.. LOL.

Peltor Sound Traps will get you close to the stock (and fit under a USGI helmet). The ability to hear when there's no shooting can't be understated.

ive been using ear plugs for a while, for some reason i always have difficulty getting the piece inserted correctly in my right ear canal. i finally gave up and just borrowed some muffs. much better. im switching to them permanently. last time i was shooting my ar, i tried it with muffs, takes a little adjusting, but i felt more comfortable with the muffs, plus no more ringing in my ear, yay!

Another +1 for the Howard Leight "impact" electronic.

Go with the Surefire -- Sonic Defenders® Plus (you can take part to clean!) - Work great around pistols and large caliber outdoors especially in shoot and scoot drills. When indoors, I add a set of the Dillion electronic too. With the Dillion, I still have protection and if I want to listen to someone, then turn up the gain.

I have been using Sonic ear plugs for over 25 years. They have a compression activated valve that allows normal sounds to be heard, but shut out the sudden loud noise from a gunshot.
