Adding suppressor help
Tried to research on forum but could not find an answer to the following so wanted to ask for help. I have a M&P 15-22 with flash hider on end of barrel. If I remove the flash hider will I need any other adapter to screw on a Yankee Hill mite suppressor with 1/2"-28 threads? What barrel vise holder would you recommend to hold the barrel to unscrew the flash hider?

It will screw directly to the 1/2"x28 threads on the barrel, but you do know that it will cost you a $200 NFA tax and will take probably six months or more to get the approval to purchase and possess? This presumes you live in the US.

Thanks. I have already purchased the suppressor and paid the NFA tax. It has already taken 5 months and I hope to receive approval next month. Any advice on removing the barrel since I heard you can break the plastic housing when trying to remove the flash hider?

"Majorlk" is correct is in that your YHM Mite will screw on your threaded barrel, but has left out some very important information. The treads on your barrel are too long for that suppressor. Your rifle barrel threads are around .6" and your suppressor is set up for pistol threads which are .4". As is, the suppressor will screw on just fine, but the.2" difference puts the muzzle too far into the blast chamber and too close to the blast baffle.
Two things will happen in this instance (1) your suppressor will not function to its peak performance and (2) the muzzle blast will eat away at your blast baffle and cause your suppressor to wear out prematurely. Google search "suppressor or silencer spacer" and you will find several manufacturers out there - and they are not very expensive. These spacers not only provide proper distance for your blast baffle, but they also give a positive shoulder for your suppressor to butt up against when screwed on to your barrel...
These things I know, because I have been a "stamp collector" for a long time. I personally run a YHM Mite on a M&P 15-22 with great results. They work real well on longer barrels. If you run them on shorter barrels such as a pistol or a SBR they get hot and are a pain in the [creative spelling - phil] to break open some times...

The halo weighs about as much as the rifle and would be front heavy and look really out of place, just sayin.

Yeah the Halo is about the weight of the gun, but the gun is light, and daddy put some goodies on her to make her a little bit more hefty so it all evens out :-)

Just got one back last Friday. It was sent in on 6/21/11 and went pending on 8/19/11 and approval was 1/17/12. Hope this helps but plan on at least 5months from pending and don't be surprised if it takes six

If they could get the turnaround time down to a "reasonable" amount of time, I'm sure there would be a LOT more stamp collectors, let's face it, this is pure profit for them, you'd think they would want MORE money!
But yeah this is the Government!

Its designed for the ar platform I dont see how it would look out of place as for the weight it might tame the slight muzzle rise. and again you can use it on three different caliburs so if you spend the$ for the tax stamp a least you can use it on other toys.....Just sayin

It's not real.. That's for my airsoft M4 it is an exact, licensed, serialized unit CNC machined from solid aluminum.
Looks cool but doesn't get used on my 15-22 it's too heavy

The wait time for the tax stamp is a bummer. However, unless you're planning on being dead in the next six months the time is going to pass anyway. Shooting suppressed increases the fun factor by at least 2x... really... it does.

Agreed. To my way of thinking a suppressor is the most useful firearms accessory you can own; and it's one of those things you don't realize how nice they are until you get that first one.
FWIW I have been waiting on two stamps for myself since august and that is a transfer from myself to myself basically, because I am an SOT wanting to take a couple of toys out of my store inventory permanently.
It doesn't matter who you are; form 1and 4's are taking a long time right now. Average turnaround time is 5 to 6 months. This is always totally dependent on the work load of the NFA Branch of ATF. They have a very small staff and the demand is high for Title II stuff. And form 1, and 4's are just part of their workload. But I will say that of all the people at ATF that I have dealt with they are far more courteous and helpful than most of the others in the Bureau. I can call anytime and speak with the examiner that handles my transfers and real answers are always available. No mumbo jumbo BS like what some of the rest of them talks.

I really wish you guys wouldn't post pictures of your sound suppressors on this site.
It depresses those of us who can't afford to move to other states where they are legal..

Adding suppressor help
Ok people, I have been reading the posts here on this suppressor thread and frankly it has gotten me excited about possibly adding one to my 15-22 Can you explain the steps or what links I can research to apply for a "tax stamp"?

Just find a class 3 dealer in your state and he will prepare all the paperwork and get the ball rolling - as it rolls very slowly... NFA is 6 months backed up right now. Tax stamp is one time and for one specifically identified item (suppressor, machine gun, etc) on your form 4.

Yes, find you an FFL that has an SOT and he will have the Form 4, FBI fingerprint cards and the Certificate of Compliance which is a little one page form that could take as much as a minute to complete. The form 4 is done in duplicate because one of them will be returned to you approved with a $200 tax stamp affixed to it and the other copy will be retained by the NFA Branch and entered into the National Firearms Registry.
The dealer will know where in the area you can find a law enforcement agency that still does inked fingerprints; and yes it must be done by a law enforcement agency. You will also need to get two passport sized photos which will be attached to each copy of the form 4. Law enforcement certification has also been a requirement but it appears that it may be going away very soon as no one within ATF or the NFA firearms community thinks much of this archaic 1934 requirement where the Sheriff generally knew all the thugs in his county. Now the computer knows them better than the Sheriff. Apparently we are waiting now for it wade through the process of public comment and all of that. When all the other paperwork is complete your dealer should know if LE signature is still required or send me a PM and i will call my examiner that day and ask "Is law enforcement certification still required". As of now it still is. But I expect that one day soon it wont be.

A. Decide what can you want. (The most difficult part of the entire process)
B. Find out who are the Class 3 dealers in your area and buy the can. Most of the time cans are not kept in a dealers inventory so you'll have to wait for it to come in.
C. Once the can is at the dealer, then the paperwork can be completed. Dealer will fill out his part, and you can fill out your part. This takes you through the step by step process. It is quite easy really. http://www.silencerresearch.com/Silencerguide.pdf

Is buying a silencer this difficult in every state??
Here in Finland we have ridiculously strict gun laws and
there's virtually no control over buying a silencer.
You just need a permit for a firearm.
