Default Loose safety switch?!

Put a new caa grip on there today and noticed my safety switch is really really loose after I pull the charging handle back and close slide. It's pretty stiff when mag is out though. (i never noticed it before)Thought it might have had something to do with the Retention springs but I put stock grip back on and it still is loose.

Anyone else had this problem of safety switch being loose? and if I rotate it just above the word safety and pull trigger it still fires.

Any help would be great. Thanks.

Afternoon Dhudd55

Sounds like you lost either the safety detent plunger or the plunger spring when you had the grip removed (both held in by the grip)

Afternoon wolverine,
Thanks. That's what I was afraid of, I watched a few instructional how-to videos before I did it, and I never heard them say anything about a plunger. I have both springs (blue/brass colored) but I also noticed that my rear takedown pin easily comes all the way out and I can see the blue spring come through the hole where the pin inserts. (is this where the plunger would come into play?)

Afternoon Dhudd55

The spring pushes on a very small little hole sized plunger in both the take down pin & safety.

Hopefully someone on the site here will provide a link to a picture for you.

I'll bet if you call S&W Monday morning & explain that you somehow lost the take down pin plunger & safety plunger they will send you new ones.

Well guess its time to get a flashlight and magnifying glass out! I tried to call them earlier but only open m-f. Hope I can find it cause I haven't even gotten to put a single round down range! Thanks for the help.

Sounds like you lost both your selector detent and takedown pin detent. They are positioned between the springs and the takedown pin and selector. If you have a shop nearby that sells AR parts, you can replace them for about $4. If not, you will need to order replacements from S&W or an online retailer.

Afternoon Dhudd55

Here is a link to pictures of the detents you will probably need to find in your work area or ask S&W for.

Thanks. I found one huding In the carpet, It's plastic and I'm assuming it's for the takedown. For the safety selector is it hollow? I can see in the hole and it has a shiney outline around it. I can also see the switch move when I flip it back and forth.

Also for the takedown detent does it slide into the part where the actual takedown pin inserts? Only logical place I see. Sorry for the dumb questions just wanna get it right without messing it up even more

Read this post for information on the takedown pin and safety selector detents:

Rear Recieiver Pin Question

Also, this image will show you everything that is held in place by the pistol grip, with the safety selector detent and spring in the yellow circle and the takedown pin detent and spring in the red:

Thanks everyone. The last pic is exactly what I needed. I lost the takedown pin detent. Gunna try and order another one from s&w or might try to use an AR type, read a few people said it would work.
