Snagged my first 5.56x45 in the late 80's in the form of an HK93 (along with it's 7.62 brother the HK91).
Picked up a .223 Mini-14 a few years after that.
an M&P-15T was the first conventional AR for me.
The latest 5.56x45 is my favorite:
- Spikes standard SF pistol lower
- PWS pistol buffer tube
- JP captive buffer spring
- Spikes M-16 BCG
- Spikes combat SA FCG
- VLTOR MUR-1A upper
- Noveske Diplomat 7.5" barrel & LP gas block
- Custom linear compensator
- MWI FF Quad-rail
It sounds something like this

Just purchased a Huldra piston model to go along with my old Colt Sporter, the new .223 works like a charm even kind of like it more than the colt. The gas porting is in front of the forearm so no more gun powder smoke in the face.

Got my MP-15 556 first, then I noticed I was going through .223 ammo like crazy since my wife loves to shoot it whenever she comes with me to the range. Solution - got her a 15-22.....now I have my 223 back, the wife is happy, and I my 223 ammo lasts much longer. Best investment I've made in a long time!

Purchased the M&P AR-15ORC and 15-22 together 2 weeks ago.
I new I would eventually want both, and when I want something I need it. If I need it then I got's to have it.
I'll get my M&P 22 out of Kalifornication jail September 4th and then take it and the 15-22 together to an indoor range for some cheap fun.

So ordered a Stag Arms 3-Gun upper, bought a forged assembled lower wo/stock and added a Geissle Super 3-Gun trigger and one more PMag. Just waiting to get all the parts to put it together and season its 18" barrel. It will look very similar to my AR15-22. Now I have a lot of "junk" parts for it like Ergo rail covers and vertical front grip, UTG bipod, tactical rail light, single point sling, rail mounted laser. Got lots of scopes including 1.5-4.5x32, 1-6x24, and 4-14x44 tactical scopes all mounted on QR mounts. But I only put on stuff when I need to use that stuff.

Update: Now I have a second AR I built on the cheap to go with my Stag based 3-gun rifle
DPMS sportical upper, 16" milspec barrel
Samson Evo 7" handguard
Iron sights from AR15-22
NcStar QR red dot/laser combo or
AimSport 1.5-5x30 on NcStar QR mount
FA polymer lower
RRA 2-stage trigger from AR15-22 PC
JP Yellow springs
Hogue grip
The only things that were not in my parts supplies already were these items:
DPMS Sportical upper-$375 on sale at MidwayUSA
FA complete lower-$109 off GB shipped
Samson Evo HG-$133 at MidwayUSA
I was looking for a LW rifle for HD plus to shoot the odd sidematch with a lighter gun and to use w/CMMG conversion in my club matches instead of the AR15-22. Total was less than my PC model.
Oops put to low a price on the Samson Evo. Corrected.

My MOE 15-22 came first, and that started my path to a 5.56/.223. I am almost done with a semi budget build, lefty. Sorry no pictures as of yet.

Got my first AR (M-16A1) courtesy of the United States Army...LOVED IT! I can still remember the first time I fired it - hearing the buffer spring moving inside the stock, virtually zero recoil, amazingly accurate, and light!
I've never owned a "store bought" AR-15.
I built my first two "personal" AR's a few years after leaving the military - a standard rifle pattern and a CAR pattern, plus I put together about a dozen more on OTC receivers for "the guys."
I currently have an LR-308 I built onto an 80% receiver I milled out, as well as an AR-15 in 5.56 also on an 80% milled receiver. I also have a Razorback upper on a dedicated 80% receiver. I'm currently building a .300 AAC, and will likely drop it onto an 80% as well. Along the way I added a couple of Mini-14's which I accurized by the simple addition of a glop of RTV sealant inside the operating slide recess where it impinges against the bolt's operating lug.

OK, I'll play.
Green one is my CQB LMT/BCM hybrid, black one is a "long distance calling" RRA/BCM hybrid with a 2 stage trigger.
Both have a lot of enhancements.....and the only thing they really need..... is to be fed.

Haven't you folks ever heard that life's too short to shoot an ugly gun? Here's my CZ 527 Carbine in .223:
Just kidding, I like my AR and my mini-14, but I'm getting too old to chase all that brass.

It's just Rustoleum rattle-can 'Camo', the cap of the can looks like a dark OD green, the paint is not.
It's different, but not what I was looking for....but not making any plans to change it, it's kinda grown on me and I kinda like it now.
I didn't want to paint everything so I removed the safety and masked off everything else I didn't want green. Can honestly say I'm not a big fan of a 2-tone weapon....rifle or pistol, but I also don't like a weapon that has all the 'controls' painted too.

Hi everyone.
I have been kinda lurking in these forums tossing the idea of getting a M&P 15-22 and I personally finally pulled the trigger on it. After the California 10 day wait period, I get to pick it up this coming Thursday!
I have been meaning to get a .22LR for a long time as I have always wanted a Ruger 10/22, but never came around to picking one up.
My first gun I purchased for myself was a Savage .223 bolt action rifle. It was my first attempt to get into guns and hunting about 5 years ago, but being in Orange County, California, I was turned off by having to drive 2+ hours in order to find a legal location to use any guns in general. Also on top of that, many of the ranges around me are indoor and don't really allow calibers higher than typical pistol calibers. Recently they have added that you can shoot in few these locations after a rifle safety class, but even so, a .223 rifle at 25 to 50 yds. isn't as exciting as taking 100yd+ target shots.
I went on a few years with the rifle collecting dust in the safe, when recently I had a new spark of interest in guns. I discovered the 1911 about a month ago and really started liking the gun a lot. It was visually appealing, it has a bit of history, and many adamant shooters and warriors, which are more knowledgeable than me in gun, trust their lives to this weapon. I haven't heard any bad things really so I just went out purchased a Springfield 1911 Loaded SS for my first handgun.
With the indoor ranges, shooting handguns definitely is a bit more challenging and fun. It sure has been a great few weeks learning how to get better shot placements and groups as it is a bit different than shooting my father's Walther PPK or his Berretta Model 950. All I got to say the first time out, I was hitting paper 1 in 4 where now I can atleast land all the shots on paper.
After a bit of researching and studying how to perfect my shot, I stumbled onto this AR looking M&P15-22. In my generation, the AR15 is a rifle that when you were a kid, you would see all the soldiers in movies, tv shows, and the news using these guns. I never really done much research into AR15's as for rifles I have always steered more towards accurate and inexpensive bolt action rifles, but looking into them more, I discovered they are definitely a lot better than the soldiers I know from Vietnam claim they are to be in this day and age with new technology in both firearms and ammunition.
After starting to look more into them, I began to realize how many of my friends already had AR15's. Everyone from old high school ROTC mates to my sister's boyfriend. So without wasting anytime, I went out searching for a M&P 15-22 MOE. I was first thinking of buying just the standard model (as the market here in CA is jacked up crazy), but even with the stupid prices here (paid $608 before CA Sales Tax and DROS fees for my MOE btw), I figure even if I didn't like the MOE stuff, I could sell it and still pay less than a brand new bone stock 15-22. So after making that decision, off in search for the gun.
After searching all my typical local shops that sell guns (yes even Walmart and Big 5) and no one had even the regular 15-22. I eventually did find a store called Grant's Boys in Newport Beach that happened to have a regular 15-22 in stock, but I didn't want to get it and have to drop another $150+ dollars to get it to the MOE version - So I waited yet another day.
There was still one large West coast chain I didn't called, Turner's Outdoorsman. I was skeptical that they would have the M&P15-22 as the S&W Gallery of Guns, there were none around. Turner's does have about 4 or 5 locations here just in Orange County, so I figure with their large buying power, they may have a showroom model atleast. I called up the closest store to me and some teenager picked up.
Me: Hi, I was wondering if you had any 15-22 MOE's in stock?
Teenager Employee: No, we don't have any in stock and we actually have a waiting list for it.
Me: How long would I have to wait for it?
Teenager Employee: Probably till the end of December.
At this point, I figure my search was futile as everyone is out of stock both online and in stores locally.
Well I figure I try a long shot and try another Turner's Outdoorsman. I gave the next closest store a call. After waiting on hold for almost 30 minutes, I finally got through to one of their employees. They apologized for the delay as they said they just got a new shipment of goodies in and most of the staff was helping unload. I asked if they had any MOE's in stock- and to my surprise, the gentleman said they had hundreds in their warehouse stocked?
"How many hundreds did you want?" he said.
I was so stoked that I was just about to jump through the phone. I told him I would be down immediately to put one under my name. That was last Tuesday and now I am jonesing to get it to the range. I was so excited I even already have 2,000 rds. or 22LR waiting.
Well aside from my long winded story, I am now here and trying to make the time go by faster by reading more on the 15-22, mods, good ammo to run through the gun, small varmit hunting locations locally, and whatever else I can google.
Also did a bit of researching into the .223 AR and I am certain if I end up liking this .22lr, I'll probably end up getting my very own AR15 in a few months if not days after my 15-22. Hopefully this wasn't TLR and hope to share my future excitements and adventures with you all.

I just bought an M&P 15OR 4 days ago. I pulled the Magpul MOE stock and MIAD grip off my 15-22 and put them on the OR but they will end up back on the 22 since the Magpul goodies will soon be available in "Stealth Grey" and that's what I'll be putting on the OR.

Congrats
I'm looking forward to the stealth grey too. I'm gonna have to build an AR just put it on. Funny how that works.

Nice selections of 223's. I wish I could post a pic but I am at work. I have a Colt H-Bar and a Bushmaster. Both set up for long range. Need to build one for fun, up and close.

Bushmaster .223 then S&W M&P 15-22
I purchased my Bushmaster .223 -20" target in 2001. It was fun to shoot but slowly began to get a bit pricey, for me. About 2 years ago I purchased the CMMG 22 conversion for it, and fell in love with shooting the .22 LR cartridge.
I was browsing the LGS one day back in October 2012 when I saw the MOE MAGPUL vesion of the M&P 15-22, and bought it on the spot. Went back two months later and bought another one (camo version) for my 11 year old son.
Shooting .22's has never been so much fun!

Purchased my first AR back in 1974. It was a Colt and I had to send it back to Colt twice because of problems. Sold it in 1976 and didn't purchase another until 1990. This time it was an Armilite that has run flawlessly ever sense. I've added a S&W 15T and a couple Bushys in the past few years.

Thanks for the new gun law in NYS I will not be able to get a AR-15 in 5.56/223 but I do have a Mossberg MVP Bolt action 5.56/223.

I laid away the MP 15 after the election. Before I got it out I just paid cash for the 15-22.
The only reason I got these was because I knew they were going to try and tell me I couldn't own one, now I'm having a lot of fun with both.
The last time I held a M16 style was 1978 when I left the employ of Uncle Sam.
The last time they did the ban I went out and bought a M14 just for spite.

As far as AR's are concerned.... Stag 2T first, M&P15-22 second. Just looking for something that fun to shoot, with cheap ammo..

Great Stuff
M&P 15-22 MOE, M&P 15-22 PC, M&P 15OR, 642CT, Model 29 Classic, Model 41, Model 22A in no patricular order. S&W is hard to beat. By far the best customer service.

Like that EOtech (E)XPS-? (0) I love the 2 i have. Reason being i run mostly CR123 recharges on all my lights so i don't have to buy any batteries anymore. the 3x G33 is good but pricey so i only have one and a PA on the other. One is on my 15-22 the other on a DD M4, SBR'd with a can.

Just saw this thread again and realized that it's the 1 year anniversary since the original post!!!
I can't believe it's been a year already but here's what the 15-22 led to since I asked the question. Times have definitely changed and room in the safe is getting tight. I'm definitely glad the 15-22 is in there with a few boxes of Federal Bulk though. Looks like I'll have to get to the range today to celebrate!
In addition to the 15-22, I have a complete lower from Spike' Tactical that I'm still debating. I may get another dedicated .22 upper.
Here are the 5.56 ARs that keep it company now. The one with the Samson rail started as a M&P OR and the other is a ground up Spike's build.

I have SIG 556 SWAT. I was looking at the BullPup but received email from Sig with a $500 rebate ( I own 4 Sig's)
Its a great rifle, seems to get better the more I shoot.
its stock except for the 'Match Trigger' which really makes a difference. The thing that gets me -- it never gets dirty.
