Default Red Dot question- have an ancient tasco propoint- should I get something else?

I have a Tasco pro point dot site from probably 20 years ago. It still works and I threw it on the 15-22 for my first trip to the indoor range today. It worked just fine, although it seems a little small in diameter (30mm) compared to modern sights.

The rings are definitely too low. I couldn't pop up my magpul sights and see 'em with the pro point on there.

1) Should I keep the pro point? Or are the newer knock-offs like the primary arms M4 clone better?

2) What kind of mount or rings should I use?

Those old Tasco red dots are quite good. I have three from the same era (I'm guessing yours is a PDP2). They have been terrorized on 9mm and 45ACP handguns and with 5.56 rifles... never skipped a beat. With the 15-22 I used very low rings and a Tapco 3/4'' composite riser for absolute co-witness Picatinny-Style Riser Mount AR-15 Flattop. Curious... where was yours made? The three that I have were made in Japan, Taiwan and the Philippines.

Are the new red dots like Primary Arms better? I like the PA MicroDot on my 15-22. It is small and light and can be mounted further forward on the receiver than the Tasco with a long length riser. As far as quality... it would be tough for any dime store optic to hold up to the abuse that the PDP2 have a reputation for enduring

Pretty sure a half inch riser will bring the sight up to the right height to co-witness with the iron sights. The first dot I had on mine was very similar to yours.

50 yards, unsupported (standing). I think this was three magazines. As fast as I could put the dot back on target and fire, I was getting ready to leave the range.

It's made in Japan. Guess I'll keep it. I ordered some warne quick release AR-15 extra-high scope rings. They're backordered. I'm thinking about just getting the 1/2" riser....

I have a Tasco ProPoint on one of my other carbines. It's the red/green dot 40mm? version sold by WalMart.

I was considering replacing it with the used Aimpoint CompL2 I recently acquired. Tried tehm both and put the Tasco back on.

Some of the Tascos just plain work very well.

Since you already have it, find out what rings you need to get the right height and use it till your bored. Why buy a new cheap one that might not last when you dont have too. Im just sayin

Mine is a ProPoint by Tasco and there's a marking on it that reads "PDP 3S7 Made in Korea "JH".

Works well. She's been in a drawer a couple of years and lit right up when I turned the knob.

I think it's a 5 MOA dot. I've no idea where the box, etc. went.

I wonder what the significance is between Tasco Propoint and Propoint by Tasco?

Here's how mine are marked.

Not sure the significance of the "by Tasco" marking but thought it interesting enough to point out.

I noted the PDP 3S7 model (that I have) was well thought of on a shotgun forum when I was searching the model number.
