Default Barrel Size?

I have to say I love this rifle and I also love the smaller version of it, the m&p 15 22pistol. So that brings me to a crazy question, and I don't know much about guns, but can you replace the rifle barrel on the m&p 15 22 with a 6" barrel (same size as the pistol barrel) and then remove the stock to basically convert it into the pistol when you want and then back into the rifle? Thanks for your help!

I don't know how easy it would be to replace the barrel on an M & P 15-22. But, I am sure it could be done without a lot of problems.

The main obstacle you will run into is with the BATF. You are going to run afoul with them as you most likely do not have the required FFL, a Type 7 I believe, to manufacture or remanufacture a firearm, AKA convert a firearm manufactured as a rifle to a handgun. You run the risk of makeing "Big Brother" REALLY MAD when you start manufacturing firearms without the proper paperwork. Conviction on the charges of converting a rifle to a handgun invole some SERIOUS PRISON TIME and $$$$$$ fines.

Thanks for the reply, and that is good to know. I was not aware that without the proper paperwork that it was illegal to convert it to a pistol. Definitly not looking to go that far to get the paperwork for that either. I would like to buy the pistol, but it seems very scarce since it is no longer in production and the idea popped in my head to make the rifle into the pistol. Plus it would be fun to have a gun with the capability of being a rifle or pistol, but sounds like it is not a good idea. Thanks

Almost on Topic

The SBR paperwork & fee is what’s stopping me from getting a RONIN G1 For my Glock 17
(I want one for the fun factor)

And really can’t believe enclosing a pistol in there stock (no other modifications) would be such a pain where as you can purchase a slide fire stock with no paperwork or fees and be good to go
