Hey, I just got the 15-22 and I was wondering what everyone would suggest I look into buying first. Should I buy mags first or should I look into other items I can put on my gun? Pretty much looking for some guidance as to what I should add onto the gun now that I have it. This is the first gun I have bought for myself so I am excited to make it my own! Thanks

Since it is your first gun, I suggest mags and ammo. Really learn to shoot well with irons first. It makes a lot of difference if you get the basics down first.

Then, it depends on what you want to do with it. Longer range, or short plinking?

For longer range, you would want a scope. Plenty of options. Then probably a bipod for stabilty when shooting of of the bench/ground.

Shorter range, I suggest a good red dot. Again, there are tons of options out there. I personally like the offerings from Primary Arms. They are really well built and supported by a great company that stands by their products and is willing to help. Plus, they wont break the bank, which is also nice. Then, maybe some sort of vertical grip. Magpul AFGs are really popular, and there are a bunch of different standard vertical grips as well. Personally, I use handstops to give me better control over the rifle.

The AR15 platform has literally thousands of different accessories and brands that you can put on it. Take your time and look through the picture thread to see what kind of stuff is out there, and what kind of stuff you might want to use for how you want to use your rifle.

Mags and Ammo. Learn to shoot with the factory iron sights first. After you have put a couple thousand rounds through the rifle, then worry about goodies to trick it out with.

As others have said, buy a couple extra mags and ammo. I'll also suggest you buy some UTG rubber rail covers. Holding onto bare rails gets irritating after a while.

Learn to shoot with the iron sights. Even though this video shows the process on a .223/5.56, the basic concept will apply to your 15-22.

Once you learn to shoot irons well, a red dot becomes a convenience not a requirement.

Shoot a few bricks of ammo over a few range sessions to discover your shooting preferences. You'll then have a better idea of what aftermarket accessories will provide worthwhile ergonomic enhancements for you.

Congrats on getting a great weapon and welcome to the forum, I agree with the above learn to shoot with the Iron sights first and get plenty of mags and ammo. Then scopes if you want accuracy/distance or rate of fire you can get the bump stock for it

Congrats on the new S&W. Learn and practice gun safety; I have been around firearms all of my life and have been shot with a 12 ga once. The recover period is not very much fun.

Buy ammo and mags; go shoot and have some fun. Look over the photo's of the accessories that others have added and figure out what you want to add.

Man that's a lot of overnight posts! I'll echo the overwhelming majority vote and say get some mags and ammo. I have 5 long mags and 2 shorties now as I was spending too much time reloading at the range. I load everything up before hand now and can spend a lot of time shooting. I'll eventualy get up to 10 25 rounders.

Bulk ammo. You can go through this stuff so fast. I really liked CCI and was buying the 100 round bricks for a while. Then I tried Federal Bulk from Walmart and haven't looked back since. I have about 3,500 rounds on hand and still feel like I'm short.

I also just got a Primary Arms 30mm Red Dot for my AR-15. I have a BSA on my 15-22. So far, so good on both. Make target acquisition really quick and a lot of fun for my kid.

... and one more thing, spend a lot of time on this forum! Search, read through the posts, scroll through the picture thread, ask questions. It's a great forum as you can see and I've yet to see the "elite response" culture that you see on so many other forums. Great group of guys here.

There's been no mention yet of lasers. We have a lot of fun with ours. My wife is a first-time shooter and her favorite thing to do with the 15-22 is blasting soda cans using the laser.
I have an inexpensive Barska red laser, but I would not recommend it. At first it would quit working after one or two shots (imagine it on a gun with serious recoil!), so I wrapped heavy paper around the battery to give it a snug fit in the compartment. It was very reliable for a couple of weeks, but last evening it quit again. Usually if I loosen the front part (where the actual laser is, and which you remove to install the battery) and re-tighten it, it will start working again. After I did that this time, the dot was way high. I'm about ready to give up on it. I have a Lasermax Micro on order for a pistol, and if it works out well I might put one of those on the 15-22 and chalk the Barska up to experience. It is also difficult to zero. When you turn the windage screw it makes the elevation jump up and down. Very annoying.

Thanks everyone for the advice as to what I should get. I am definetly going to grab some more ammo and mags. I have 550 federal rounds and one mag that came with the gun. I am excited to get shooting and learn the ins and outs of the gun, as well as gun safety. I am sure ill get great advice and answers to any questions I have on the forum. Aside from ammo and mags I think the next purchase will be either a sling or rail guards :-) Also, how often should I clean my 15-22?

Good rule of thumb, is to clean your 15-22 every time you use an emoticon in a forum post.....no not really. You'll get varying opinions on the matter. Personally, I think its more important to keep the bolt and upper receiver clean than it is to clean the barrel every time. Some people like having a fouled barrel and feel it improves accuracy some, other people feel you should clean the entire gun after every range trip.

P.S. Forget getting a girlfriend, you need an ebay account. Plus once you've accepted your fate, get a few more mags, then rail guards, then a sling, and then more ammo....

Can't go wrong with more ammo- more ammo- and more ammo. Then you'd need mags to load it in.

There is no absolutely right answer to this. Every firearms enthusiast has their own opinion on this.

Some clean after every range session. This level of clean is a quick wipe & lube of the BCG, wipe out the action, and run a bore snake.

Some do a detail clean of the rifle. Detail disassembly, full clean, break out the dental picks & fine cleaning tools.

Some clean after every X number of rounds.

Some clean the bolt & receiver, but not the barrel until it evidences a degradation in accuracy.

It's all up to you.

I'm not sure what type of rail guards you have in mind, but if you want the ladder type, be aware that prices vary a lot. I got two packs of these via Amazon for next to nothing. I don't have anything to compare them to, but they seem fine.

I clean after every range trip, it keeps the carbon from building up and I got into the habit from the Corps. A added bonus it doesn't take much time to keep it clean when you do it this way or wait a few trips and spend a lot of time cleaning lol as stated above its all up to you the only thing I would NOT recommend is using abrasives in the barrel.
