Default What .22 should I get?

About 6 months ago I purchased a .22 15-22 and shot it a whole bunch of times and loved it... I was a first time firearm owner then but since have gotten two hand guns Glock 19, Sig P250, 12 G Winchester and my baby an AR-15. I traded in my 15-22 for store credit towards the glock, I miss the .22 bc of the cheap ammo and overall it was fun to shoot

So ive been doing some searching online and came across a couple of .22 and want some opinions.

Henry Lever action .22 (280.00)

Ruger 10-22 (350.00)

M&P 15-22 (450.00)

I know all three have + and -, the Henry is a beautiful gun and love the lever action. The ruger is #1 selling .22 rifle and has a ton of accerories. The 15-22 is just a bad *** looking gun that is the same platform as the AR, easy to clean and fun to fire.

let me know what you guys and girls think, if you have any other recommendations feel free to let me know. Thanks, Nick

If I'm being honest, if you have the cash, get the 15-22.

I own 2 out of the 3 you named, and have a good bit of experiencec with the Henry.

Henry is a top notch company, my brother-in-law has the golden boy and he's emailed / smoken w/ the company president a couple times. Very classy place.

10/22 is a fun gun too. I've got some extras on mine so it's a very fun range gun. That being said, to make it that fun I've dumped a few more dollars into it than what you've posted. Tactical Innovation 25 round magazines, butler creek speed loader... etc etc

15-22... it is what it is.. this thing is just awesome... but the most $$ in what youo've posted.

most gun ranges rent the 15-22 so I would suggest trying it first and if they have the others to try them also. I think you will love the 15-22 we all do

Wink What an awful dilemma!

I would take a second mortgage on my home and buy all three great .22s

But seriously, my choice would be the 15-22, for all the reasons you mention.

Tough list... Love my 15-22 but really want a 10-22 also. I don't think any gun lover can really be satisfied with just one or the other. The 10-22 is legendary and the 15-22 is hands down the best complete .22 in the AR platform.

we have the 15/22 and the 10/22 and a gsg522
love shooting all of them but the 522 is first on the list followed by the 15/22 then 10/22..
a day at the range is crazy fun as the 522 is very good at putting it on the dot even rapid fire...
SWMBO loves the 15/22 and can out shoot me with it.
the 10/22 is fun to shoot, but not as much fun as the other two.

I have a 15-22 and a 10/22. They're both great rifles. If I had to choose just one and have it up and running just the way I like it out of the box, I'd go with the 15-22.

The 10/22 has a legendary reputation that over-inflates a shooter's expectations. It's a good rifle, and becomes great when you work on it and add after-market parts.

I'll throw another rifle into the mix you should consider: A Marlin 795. There aren't as many aftermarket parts for it like the 10/22, but it doesn't need them. The Marlin micro-groove barrel is superbly accurate out of the box.

My friend's OEM stock Marlin 795 out shoots an OEM stock 10/22 out of the box. My slightly modded 10/22 barely keeps up. I would have to swap out my barrel to beat his rifle.

Great choice on the Glock 19. I have one and love it!

As far as the rifle goes, I guess it depends on what you want to use it for. If you want a cheaper alternative to shoot then your true AR then the 15-22 is a good choice. IMHO, it's a .22 that actually functions pretty close to a true AR. However, the Henry is fantastic if you are looking for a traditional, American-made rifle. It is a totally different shooting experience. Both are great choices it just depends in the primary use.

Word of advice. Don't try a S&W M&P 9 full size. It will make you want to trade in your Glock.

I have both. If you want an AR the 15/22 is the only way to go.
I you want a rifle that can be just about anything you want it to be, choose the Ruger.
I can take my $170.00 Ruger carbine, and with $1000.00 make it into a 200 yard tack diver. Or with $ a AR look alike.
Or with Red Jacket's new bull pup the Ultimate Zombie gun.
Red Jacket ZK-22 Bullpup Stock
First Look at the Red Jacket ZK-22 Bullpup Rifle - YouTube
SHTF Weapons: Ruger 10/22 ZK-II - YouTube
Ruger 10 22 Modifications - how to improve accuracy on a budget - YouTube

You can do a lot with with either. Just depends on what you want to do! Out of the box with the new Ruger BX-25 mags. I would say the Ruger is equal or better a just shooting targets for less cost.

Both great guns!!!

I now own all three from the original post.....bought my Henry h001 this past weekend.
My all time fav in my 10/22 with modifications of course. A true tack driver at 50 yards.
My second choice is my 15/22 without a doubt. Sub 1" group at 50 yards.
The little Henry won me over in 5 mins right out of the box. I blasted through 300 rounds Saturday and was grinning the whole time.

Any of these rifles are great....just depends on what your wanting to do with them.

I think you missed the part of his posting that said he used to own an AR15-22 and traded it to get the Glock. He is wondering among those 3 which he should buy now for a .22.

My vote is the AR15-22 again myself.

I don't own a 10/22 but I do own it's main competition the Remington 597. Slightly more accurate out of the box than a 10/22, at least in tactical trim, SR-22 vs. 597 VTR. I am fairly positive my AR15-22 PC model was about the same accuracy as those 2 out of the box, but way more expensive. My 597 was a Wally World $167 gun that now has close to $1000 in it once you count the Volquartsen carbon fiber sleeved bull barrel, Jard trigger assembly and a complete VTR conversion kit. Now it will throw groups out to 100 yards well under 1" (more like .4" at 100 yards). But I reserve it exclusively for precision shooting work like Metallic Silhouette or hunting. Also have a Savage bolt gun in .22WMR. It rarely comes out of the safe these days. The AR15-22 gets 90% of my range and match time these days. And its now up around $1000 considering the higher initial cost. Once you figure in the 9 mags, Nordic handguard, 1-6x24 tactical scope and the Geissele Super 3-Gun trigger. Not a tack driver at 100 yards but it nails steel almost as fast as a full auto. It is setup like my 3-gun AR.
Thinking about getting a second AR15-22 for a different use.

I know that you went with the 10/22 and it is a great choice that you will be able to build on till you are broke. I have a 15-22 to cover the run and gun thrill with a cheap shooting .22 and a Savage Mark II, for my pin pont accurate .22. They are both awesome in there own right. My son and I love them both for what they are, two totally different rifles. What a a great time! Enjoy your 10/22, but don't forget about the awesome bolt action .22's. They are a blast as well.

The only answer I can give is a question itself: Which model of the 15-22 fits your needs?

The 10/22 is not a bad choice. I added a set of Tech Sights to mine, and greatly improved my ability to hit consistently with it over the stock sights. Improved so much that now my son will not allow me to use my Ruger when we have father / son shooting competitions at the range. He shoots his 15-22 and makes me shoot my CMMG Quebec A (AR-15 with dedicated .22lr upper on milspec lower). Highly recommend the Tech Sights over the standard sights.

Thanks for the input everyone!

My decision came after going to the gun shop 45 mins from me, he had all three the 10- 22, 15-22 and the Henry Golden boy. To be honest the Golden boy was beautiful and felt great in my Hands but to me it was to beautiful to shoot lol he didnt have any stock Henry's available. The 15 - 22 was great but I guess since I had it already I wanted a feel for something else, so I chose the 10-22 and I think my wife would have kicked my butt spending 485 w/ tax... I think im better off my buying upgrades little by little, lol.

I purchased the Carbine verion with the dark colored wood stock, but I purchased an ATI Fiberforce stock from amazon for 45.00 it got good reviews and just gives the gun a badder look. Like I posted before I purchased a 60.00 scope at Dicks, looks good so far but ill see how it holds up.

I know this isn't a Ruger forum but let me know of any other upgrades that you guys have... Just a reminder I live in the big RED apple (NY) where a collapsible stock, flash suppressor and over 10RD Mags are a No No.

10/22 is a good gun, but I just don't get all the hype on them. I think there are better models out there for the same or less money. I had a 10/22. Put a bunch of $$ into to make it accurate. Then I got a Savage bolt action 22 and it outshot it out of the box. So did my Sig 522. I know my Marlin bolt action will, and it cost alot less. The Remington 597 and Marling model 60 are both more accurate. I'd be willing to bet the 15/22 is just as accurate or more so out of the box. Not bashing on the OP's desicion but count me as a former 10/22 owner who wasn't all that impressed.

Bolt actions are typically more accurate than semi autos. I can tell you that my Ruger 10/22 carbine, purchased in 1984, is more accurate than our M&P 15-22. My Ruger is stock, with the exception of adding Tech Sights. This is only a sample of one, both using Federal bulk ammo. Before the Tech Sights, the Ruger had a Tasco scope on it. Many squirrel were taken in my youth with that rifle.

My 10/22 will run circles around my 15/22 as far as accuracy goes. Although my 10 year old loves the 15/22 because we put on holo sights, front grip, tac light, etc. etc. etc.

I have an 18x scope on the 10/22 just to see what it will do. It's pretty good, but not spectacular. (Disclaimer: I have a Remington 541T, a 10/22T and an Anschutz 64 which all shoot pretty good). It shoots about as good as some of the bolt action Ruger .22's I have.

All I've done to the 10/22 is put a Volquartsen trigger in it. It's the carbine model and I notice the metal strap around the barrel causes fliers. Someday I would like to glass bed the action and free float the barrel to see how much I can improve it.

The 15/22 does not shoot real well, about 1" at 50 feet. It just throws fliers quite often. I haven't dug into it see why.

The 15/22 does not shoot real well!! I disagree. The 15/22 comes with AR15/M16 combat sights. These are designed to put rounds quickly into center mass man size targets, not paper.
I can hit a 9" pie pan 25 out of 25 shots at a 100 yards. What more do you need??? Or what did you expect??? All in the same eye socket at 100 yards???

I shot a 10 shot 4" group at 50 yards today with my 15/22. Open sights. Could not do much better with any open sight .22lr. that I own.

A more capable shooter would/could have done better.

I just *love* my Perf Center 15-22 that I have had for several months now! It was the most "immediately fun" and "Wow!" gun that I have ever gotten. Just wish that it had come with 25rd magazines and a flash hider, but I have now fixed both of those problems.

I also just got a 10/22 Target that I have not shot yet because I didn't get a scope with it (no iron sights), but that is arriving tomorrow and I expect a totally different experience with it.

I grew up with my Dad's Remington 12c pump, which defined what a .22 should be, but after a long period of dormancy I am now branching out. Other objects of desire include:

- Remington 522 Speedmaster = modern semi-auto version of the 12c, for no other reason.
- Ruger 77/22 or 77/17 of some kind. One shot, one kill.
- Browning SA22 grade II octagon = like the 12c. Out of stock everywhere at the moment.
- new ones arriving daily. I can't die yet; too much to try out yet!!!!

Did I mention how much I love my 15-22?

Henry Lever action .22 (280.00)

Ruger 10-22 (350.00)

M&P 15-22 (450.00)

I know all three have + and -, the Henry is a beautiful gun and love the lever action. The ruger is #1 selling .22 rifle and has a ton of accerories. The 15-22 is just a bad *** looking gun that is the same platform as the AR, easy to clean and fun to fire.

let me know what you guys and girls think, if you have any other recommendations feel free to let me know. Thanks, Nick
I don't quite understand. You had a 15-22, traded it off and now you're wondering about buying another?

I'm confused.

One "fun" gun that always gets overlooked is the Marlin 60. 19 shot tube magazine and goes bang all day long. Super accurate too! You can find a nice used one for around $100.

Exactly. People seem to overlook the fact he's already owned a 15-22.

I do enjoy my MOE and 15-22P! If you take the time to try different ammo you can get the accuracy to tighten up quite nicely.

Every gun collection should include at least one 10/22. It's a standard. But I don't understand why the one you were looking at is $350. Is it tricked out or something ?

Many squirrel were taken in my youth with that rifle.
True bolt actions are more accurate. I also refered to a few different sem-autos that are more accurate out of the box than the 10/22.

If you want it for accuracy you should look at a Browning "T-Bolt",or a CZ.

My "T bolt" put all of the shots into one hole-Back when I could see the target. Unfortunately those days are gone.

'Accuracy' means different things to different people.

I realize the 15/22 is meant to be fun, and meant to make S&W a ton of money. And it does both those tasks quite well.

At 100 yards I expect less than a 1" group. My Anschutz will do that using cheap Blazer ammo. For me that is acceptable.

I have a friend that shoots competition .22 and is nationally ranked. My best .22 is something he wouldn't dream of using. He shoots a customized Kimber and an Anschutz 64. He wears a funny rubber padded suit with velcro patches and special pants for three position tournaments. If he scores less than a 292 he is disappointed, that means he got the 9 ring 8 times. That usually happens when he shoots standing offhand. And on these targets the bullseye is the diameter of the round --- .22" !

With iron sights I don't expect much unless they are something like olympic target sights. But with the scopes I use you can see your heartbeat moving the crosshairs. No fudge factor there, just me and the gun to make a mistake. And if I do my part but the bullet flies off, well that's just not right to me.

Don't get me wrong, I plink all the time to! Set up balloons and water bottles, clay pigeons and exploding targets... It's great fun!

I bought a Henry Golden Boy .22lr for my wife on her last birthday. A friend had one and when she tried it she just had to have one. It is a nice rifle. My wife and I are now always looking at the 15-22 when we go to the LGS to buy ammo. It will only be a matter of time before she wants one. I have seen some incredible mods done to the Ruger but that 15-22 would be my next purchase.
