Default Ammo suggestions

I just bought a 15-22 MOE in FDE on Gunbroker that I'm going to pick up on Monday and I already ordered three FDE 25 round mags from G&R Tactical. Before I load up on ammo, I'm curious to know which ammo you guys use and are there any specific brands to stay away from.

congrats and post some pics up.

federal bulk and cci blazer are the 2 most popular bulk brands. if you want to spend a little more then cci mini-mags almost never have issues in any .22. cci tactical is designed for ar .22s but a few people have had issues (not me). if you read the manual, s&w lists a few brands to stay away from like remington thunderbolts.

Every rifle is a law unto itself, as far as ammo is concerned. Buy at least 100 rounds of each ammo you want to try. Don't just switch ammo from one to another. Run a BoreSnake or a couple of patches down the barrel when you change ammo and then put five or ten rounds through it before you start accuracy checks.

While S&W does not recommend most Remington ammo, there's no reason you can't try it, if that's what you have available. Many users have reported using it with no problems.

BTW, welcome aboard! We'll help you through the pains of adjusting to your new addiction.

Thanks. I'm not new here. I was a moderator here for a number of years but decided to give it up when I turned 65 in July. So now that I have a lot more free time, I decided to take the plunge and bought the FDE 15-22 MOE.

I have mostly used CCI Blazer Bulk and Federal Bulk with virtually zero issues. I probably have close to 2k rounds through it now.
Just this past week I have been using CCI Sub-Sonic. It is much quieter here beside the house and it reliably works the action without any problems.

Thiokol,

Welcome to the fun, a lot of great information here. Once you pick up your new weapon you will have a blast with it.

I too am new to the board, had my M&P 15-22 almost a month. Like several folks have written you will need to find out what works best for you.

I have already used the following for several hundren rounds and have had no issues.

CCI Mini Mags (100) about 500 total
Federal Champion (50) several hundrend total
Federal Bulk (525)
Blazer Bulk (525)

I have a box of Winchester X-22 that is next followed by CCI Tactical is my last sample.

So far I have had no issues, but you need to try your weapon and see what it likes best. as others suggested try several hundrend rounds and see how they feed, eject, accuracy and what residue do they leave behind.

As the documentation reads and others have posted stay away from Remington. It does not want to play well with the 15-22.

Good luck and enjoy the time at the range with the new toy.

I've had the best results as far as accuracy and performance with CCI Tactical. CCI made this 22LR for Semi-auto's like the M&P 15/22, if feeds 100% and burns very clean and no flyers, what more can you ask of a 22LR... Good Luck.

While my experience has shown that CCI Tactical is somewhat more accurate than Federal Classic, I have had more feeding problems with the CCI (in all my guns), while almost none - no, none - with the Federal. I bought 4 boxes of the CCI, and am still looking for a gun it will shoot completely reliably in.

All of my guns shoot CCI-Tactical pretty well. I used to use Mini-Mags in my rifles for competition but since earlier this year when CCI-Tac became available at WM I find it feeds better than MM, due to the slightly different shape of the bullet nose. It also shoots Fed 550 well but I get significantly more duds with Fed .22 than I do CCI. CCI is known to have better QC on the production line than Federal.
The only Fed I won't shoot anymore is Champion as that is the ammo that cause the jam in my AR15-22 at the PSA event this year.
I will shoot Fed 550 bulk, Lightning, and AutoMatch, all the CCI models plus Win M-22. The problem with the Fed Champion is due to the slightly longer OA length of the rounds compared to Fed 550 as the match chamber in my PC did not seem to like them that well.

+1 CCI Tactical

Easily the most accurate ammo in my 15-22...
I've tried against Winchester M-22, CCI Blazer, CCI Mini Mag, Federal 525 Champion, and Remington Yellow Jacket HP.

I shot this 10 round group yesterday from 50yds off the bench using my cheap plastic wobbly bi-pod (I also did the JP springs on my trigger)

CCI Blazer for bouncing soda cans around.
Cheap and reliable.

CCI Standard Velocity for shooting suppressed.
Stays subsonic in 16in barrel, reliable, improved accuracy over CCI Blazer and not too expensive at Dick's Sporting Goods $25/500.

Aguila Match Rifle for accuracy.
Low end match ammo but performs to the limitations of this rifle. Not too pricey at around $30/500 buying on line, reliable, and as a bonus it smells like burnt pineapples.

--- S&W used to include in the Manual (perhaps they still do) a do not use list of ammo. I think the list was the result of a ton of out of battery discharge occurrences which S&W seems to have cured with different springs a couple years ago. My 15-22 cycles well with a dozen or more different types of ammo I've tried, including some on the list.

Smile Ammo

I have run over 500 rounds of Aquila SuperExtra High Velocity through mine with no ftf, ftfeed, fte or OBDs and good accuracy. I'm new here and loving this fun-to-fire weapon.

CCI Mini-Mags and Blazers shoot 100% and are very consistent.
Federal bulk shoots 99% and are somewhat less consistent.
Gemtech subsonics shoot 100% with or without a can.
I stopped counting a long time ago, but I'm well past the 40,000 round mark and it just keeps getting better !!

So much for the yo-yo who stated last week that the useful life of a 15-22 was 10k rounds.

As a recent owner I have fired American Eagle, Winchester Super X, Federal Bulk, CCI mini mags at the range to see which work best, all performed without a problem. I'll probably go with the Federal bulk at Wally World for the price.

For first ~ 500 rounds I suggest CCI Mini Mag. Break in time/rounds. i have had good results with Federal American Eagle, and Campions.

After about ~ 5000 rounds, the tip of my ejector broke off. Back to S&W. Customer service was great. Got it back, and now it shoots about anything HV, but Remington Products.
For some reason my rifle and Remington just don't get along. Mileage may vary.
My Ruger 10/22 will eat them all.
I buy 1000 rounds of CCI Mini Mags for ~ $65.00 OTD. So that is the goto ammo for me.

It also runs good in my .22lr pistols.

I have come to the conclusion that all brand name ammo is subject to erratic quality.

Bulk ammo, to a certain degree, yes. Individually packaged ammo, such as CCI MiniMags, Green Tag and similar have tighter quality control. Match ammo has the tightest QC. For the most part, there is a direct correlation between cost and QC. This opinion is based on shooting well over 300k over the years.

If all I am doing is busting cans and similar plinking, I never sweat the occasional problem round. Too much angst over the issue, especially among new shooters, IMHO. People want match-quality ammo for three or four cents a round - ain't gonna happen.

I wanted to chime in due to what I discover after my last time loading .22 for my 15-22

I have 6 bad Boxes of CCI Blazers... need ta send em back to CCI (already confirmed) so they can replace them

have always had a few FTF issues with my Slide fire and CCI Blazers and Federal Value/Bulk

Well Sunday was loading my Mags. had a Fresh box of Federals i started to load in my 50rd drum... Kept Jamming Up.... Cleaned it.. still jamming... Grabbed some of the Bad/Dirty CCI Blazers loaded fine....Hmmmmmm

just Now i opened a Fresh box, Different Batch, of Federals and all worked just Fine....

So it appears, as some have stated, Bulk packs are not created equal.....

if you find you are having issues, check the rounds, try another Box with different Batch number, and That may solve it....

Ill use those rd's for My Pistols and use the Good stuff for my 15-22

Anyways thought i'd share with you all...

I put 750 rounds of CCI Tactical and 400 rounds of Federal Game Shok through my new rifle earlier today and had zero issues.

Whew... what a relief. For a minute there I thought you had broken my record of 5,500 before Sunday brunch.

Glad to see you're enjoying the 15-22. Welcome to the addiction.

My normal shoot is 325 through the 15-22 and another 100-150 through one of my .22 pistols.

Today I didn't take the 15-22, but went through 150 rounds of .22 in the Ruger SR22P, close to 100 rounds of .40 S&W and 100 rounds or so of 9mm.

I try to shoot that much .40 and 9mm through my carry guns at least once a month.

This is a cool little pistol - and it's nice to share ammo with the 15-22

I have three other .22 pistols, a S&W M34, a Match Ruger MkII and a High Standard match, but this is the one I pull out when I just want to have some fun punching cans. And it has a very nice 3.5 pound SA trigger, too.

i usually run about 1-200 rds through the 15-22. i have 4 mags pre-loaded so just depends if i have the time to reload. now that i added the 1911 .22 i put 100 rds through that too. since i go about once a week, i usually take at least 1 of my xd9's every other week to run 50 rds through.

I shoot and load a lot....I got the thick callus' on the tip of my left thumb and forefinger to prove it.

Update for the fourm, made trip to the range and spent 400+ rounds of Winchester X-22, overall worked very weel but did have two fail to feed. I can't tell you if it was the amom or if maybe the mags didn't get the proper alternations when they were loaded.

Again only two feed issues in over 400 rounds today.

Just my old-fart opinion, but folks get too worked up over a couple of feed failures in a whole big box of relatively cheap ammo.

+1 for CCI mini mags.

My 15-22 and M&P22 both love them (both RN and HPs) The M&P gets them exclusively as it seems to be slightly more picky. I will use federal bulk in the 15-22 with very good results (so far) when I am shooting for quantity as opposed to quality!

im glad ive had a couple failures in my 15-22 and a handful in my 1911 .22. it helps keep me on my feet and gives me practice dealing with them in a situation before it really counts for something.

w0ady,

I agree that does give you a chance to address that situation. We can all use the experience to make sure we know how to handle the situation.

I know that the WWs are not recomended - but because I have so many around I tried them anyway. They worked fine for me. No jams or problems.

New member here, and I was in the same position as the OP a few weeks back having just bought my 15-22. Most of the reviews I read on the matter seemed to have recommended the brands thrown about here, but I tended to notice that the CCI Minimags seemed to end up most of the reviewers of the weapons #1 choice, so I went with that.

So far I have taken my 15/22 out twice putting 300 rounds through it (hey also was shooting my AR-15 and handgun as well :P) and have had just one misfeed. For a .22lr that really is pretty darned good.

mini-mags are great but you can also try out cci blazer and federal bulk for some reliable, cheaper options.
