Cleaning kits
Just bought a outres 28 piece kit rod broke at screw fitting first time I used it they just don't make stuff like they used to. What is a good cleaning kit to get? Also I couldn't even get a cleaning patch to start down the barrel seemed like they were to big cut one in half and still couldn't get It to go through. Never used to have any problems with my old kit but I can't find it anymore.
Just started shooting again what a blast love my m&p.

I use the Otis pull through kits. They also have a grip kit so I never leave home without it. Nice and compact and work with many calibers depending on how you fold the patch.

I bought a muti-piece cleaning rod, and as happened to you, it broke the first time I tried stuffing it through my 15-22. So I bought a carbon fiber $30 one-piece rod, and about broke everything /but/ the rod trying to get it through.
Now, the broken rod is in the trash, and the one-piece rod is in the back of the closet somewhere, while I use my Bore Snake to clean my 15-22, just like all my other guns.
Problem is, that pretty well trashes the usefulness of the other 27 pieces of your kit. :-(

I have an Otis 223/5.56 kit inbound for use on my AR. On the 15-22, I use my Hoppes BoreSnake, a brush, and patches.

Because a BoreSnake in the beginning can be very difficult to pull, use caution. I suggest you keep a plastic straw (or a rubber tube) in your kit. When it's time to use the BoreSnake, first slide the straw over the Extractor before pulling the BoreSnake through. This will prevent the BoreSnake from getting caught on the Extractor and prevent any kind of potential alignment issue.

Boresnake! I used rods and patches for 40 years and now the only time I use them is if I have a severe case of copper fouling in one of my rifles.

I purchased a carbon fiber rod, but not for cleaning. I figured that there may come a time when I can't remove a failure to eject by cycling the bolt, that I can use the rod. I keep the rod in my hard case should the need ever arise.

I found the Patchworm kit via rimfirecentral.com several years ago and really like it for my .22's. It can clean most calibers but I really only use it for .22 It's basically a light duty, and inexpensive, Otis type system. I also use the felts, plain and abrasive, for more intensive cleaning every once in a while. It's worth a look.
