Seeing as how you said you can take it or leave it, I'd say you wouldn't want to go through the pains of removing the stock rails, because it ain't a walk in the park. You'd be better off getting rail covers if you want a more rounded grip. Magpul, HK, etc.

The conversion isn't that bad at all. Pay a visit to tacticool22.com and order some tools/parts from Jody. He makes a conversion nut that replaces the barrel nut on the 15-22 and will allow you to use something like the Hogue tubular handguard. I went with a VLTOR CASV-EL and also needed a delta ring assembly and AR barrel ring.

I put an AFG2 on mine, and Surefire rubber rail covers. Well, they aren't covers, really....they are slotted, and fit between the rails, making them flush and smooth in your hand....takes away all of the jagged edges. Came in a set of three for cheap cheap cheap!

Get a can of spray paint and it can be any colour you want.
But yes, they come in black.

I like that hand guard. I even showed to the wife and she agreed with me that you have a nice rifle there. I had to pinch myself when she said it

Nice to know they come in black. Not a big fan of rattle cans... If I'm going to get crazy,I'll get out my airbrush and really go nuts.

This. I put the Magpul rail ladders on mine and it really changed the feel of the front rails. Nice and soft with good grip and no more sharp edges. If I want to add some accessories the ladders pop off quick and can be custom cut to length.
And they are CHEAP!!
Rail covers --
and Rail Ladders
both come in many colors

I was also thinking of getting this. So since you said you cut your barrel to 12", i'm assuming this is the 9.8" model you have on yours? In looking at the real JP's I think I found the inner diameter to be 1.75"? Can you confirm this? I'm looking to also add a kinetiTech shroud that states is 1.5" round.
I need to measure out how it would look with the 12" model with the kinetiTech 6" shroud.
And nothing else was needed besides tacticool's barrel nut adapter right?

Tacticools adapter is great, opens you up to all the good AR goodies out there, should be all you need, besides the special wrench to take off the stock handguard.

Right, the castle top tube.
So one more question about the JP, I saw a video of an installation of another free floating handguard (troy battle I think it was) and it had a couple of tabs on the receiver end that helped the tube from walking. I don't see something like this on the JP. I see that the tube is attached with screws to the nut, but i'm wondering if the nut somehow staked into the adapter or if it's just held in place by the threads and tightening of the two pieces.

If anyone is interested I have the carbine length DIAMONDHEAD handguard from my Stag Arms AR. It is almost in new condition with no scratches. Comes complete with the delta ring, spring, retainer and ladder accessories. PM me if interested. Tnx

I just got my order in today of these covers, I got a 12 pack. They feel great in my hand and round out the grip area. Still waiting on my Magpul MOE RVG grip. Should have it tomorrow.

Magpul rail covers worked out great. I think they were about $8 for a pack of 4, so a few packs wasn't too expensive. Feel is great with the AFG1 (like it better than the newer AFG2).

Super easy. Remove the factory barrel nut and hand guard. Screw on adapter and tighten it down. Screw on the frre float hand guard. Or attach the hand guard adapter, then continue with their instructions.
The rail covers make for a large hand guard. The ladder covers are not much better.

I had the same dislike. I just went to the sporting goods department at Walmart and they carry and bunch of Blackhawk! accessories. I picked up 3 of the Full Cover Rail Covers from Blackhawk! They work perfect for me and the covers were relativity cheap. I think I paid $10 each.
