Sorry if this post doesn't reach out to the majority of 15-22 users but am trying to get a handle on which M&P 15-22 a NJ resident, :( can purchase and get a worthwhile one. Our mag limits apparently are limited to a Compliant 10 rounds for some reason. Anyway, if there are some NJ owners out there with a 15-22 please feel free to tell me what you have and if your happy with the purchase. I see the prices go from low to high, naturally. Would I be satisfied with the 811031 model or not. My use is basically target/range use. I have an M&P22 and M&P9 FS and am very happy with both.

Thanks

The dealer will know what you can legally purchase in New Jersey. Your choice is limited to the 031 model. None others are, as far as I know, are legal in New Jersey.

As to whether or not you will be satisfied with that no one but you can answer that question.

I'm in NJ and I have the 811031 15-22. Unfortunately you only have a choice of this model and the Performance version (170337). I really enjoy the rifle and just came back from 200 rounds this morning with my brother and nephew. Its a blast. I've swapped out the stock sights for magpul Gen 2 Mbus sights and added a scope as well.

You won't be disappointed.

Howard,

What part of NJ are you in? There are a few places south of GSP exit 98 that I've seen them in-stock. We're limited to 15 rounds, but for some reason, 10 is the magic number for the 15-22 mags:/ I'd gladly give money to the person/company that makes a stock-ish 15 round mag for it.

Yes, only you can determine if you'll like the gun, but I'd bet money you will;) It's an amazing firearm. You'd be hard-pressed to find someone here that absolutely hated it.

I'm located in South Jersey, not far from exit 4 of NJ Turnpike. I'm getting to like the 15-22 the more I read and see them. They do have the 811052 at a LGS, but I don't think it's a man gun. ;) Do you think for $269 more, the 170337 Performance Center is worth the extra for what you get or just stick with the 031 and call it a day?

Howard

I paid $450 plus tax for mine last summer. They are harder to find now but shops do get them in. A friend of mine bought one from Ottomanelli's in Woodland Park last month. The NJ neutered version comes with 10 round mags. There is one maker of 15 round mags that I know of.

Great gun, even the compliant model is a blast.

Stick with the 031 Compliant version. I really don't think for the average target shooter that you'll get much benefit from the performance version.

Rrages had stock magazines modified to 15 rounders but they were pricey. Looks likey they either no longer sell them or tey are currently out of stock.

By the way you can also buy a unthreaded 15-22 from delaware or pennsalvania have the dealer give you credit for mags and pin the stock before entering nj.

I'm looking everywhere. I have checked some places in Pa and De but they won't sell me one not "Compliant" for NJ. I did find a dealer in NJ., and he has a price of $515. Wonder if that's a fair price these days? I assume I would have to pay the transfer fee to a local FFL and naturally the NICS charges.

Howard

No transfer fee on a any firearm (long gun or pistol) bought in person from an in state nj dealer just tax and nics.

I purchased the NJ compliant Model 811031 from the Bullet Hole in Belleville NJ just 2 weeks ago. Paid $515. The Bullet Hole is a family-run small business that has been around a long time. Nice, knowledgeable folks and NO RIP-OFFs. They can't "hold" anything for you, but get regular shipments. I got lucky and hit it the first time. Gave them my credit card over the phone and went in later that day to fill out paperwork. Expect to wait a week or more as the NICs is WAY backed up.

I was wondering if that was a good price but if you "gotta have it" price doesn't much matter. I did call the Bullet Hole and they had a few in stock. It's a pretty good ride for me to get there, but might just do it.

I know the NICS is way backed up from buying the M&P 22 and the 9mm. Just means a second trip back to pick it up. I have my name on my LGS list also.

I live in NJ and have the M&P15-22 model 811033. I purchased it online and had it shipped to my FFL. They did pin the stock, swapped out the 25round mag for a 10, and soldered the compensator. As far as I know, that should make it legal in NJ. It is important to note that even the S&W website clearly states that this model has an "A1 style compensator". It is not a flash hider or suppressor. This was cut and paste right from the S&W site:

SKU: 811033

Shooting Industry Academy of Excellence Rifle of the Year

Features:

•Threaded Barrel with A1-Style Compensator (1/2 x 28" Thread)
•Two-Position Receiver Mounted Safety Lever
•Functioning Charging Handle
•Bolt Catch
•Recessed Magazine Release
•Ambidextrous Load-Assist Button
•Lightweight, High-Strength Polymer Upper and Lower Receiver with Integral Steel Inserts
•Lightweight, High-Strength Polymer Quad Rail Handgun
•6-Position Collapsible Stock

The new M&P15-22 is a dedicated M&P15-format rifle designed and built as a true .22 LR semi-auto from the ground up, with all the standard operating features and accessory specifications of a modern-version centerfire M&P15 rifle.

With the modifications performed by my FFL, no reason that firearm isn't legal in NJ

Just a word of caution, the issue that I am having now is that I can't get a barrel nut wrench on b/c I can't remove the compensator. NUTS!! I think that I will have to cut the wrench in half (lengthwise of course), bring it around the barrel then clamp it back together. I think the wrench will be too long and still contact the compensator though.

I am wondering why you would go to all that trouble on the 033 when the 031 or the 047 has all the "compliant" things done to it already?

Might be wrong but the compensator/flash suppressor is cosmetic only?

The only 4 M&P 15-22s that are NJ compliant from the factory are the 811031, the 170337 (performance), the 170337 (camo) and the 811052 (pink). While any gun can be modified to be made compliant, why take the chance when you can be compliant from the factory?

I spoke to a S&W rep today concerning which models would be covered in the "compliant" scheme of things here in NJ. Definitely the 811031 and the 811047 and also the 1770337 is because those specs are identical. They both have the big 3 demands making them Compliant. Compliant in these states mean 3 basic things that have to be done to the weapon, and I believe the gun cannot be altered from another version to make it compliant. More or less has to be born compliant. One item is the 10 round mag, another is the fixed stock position, )not ajustable) and lastly no flash suppressor on the end of the barrel. Even though that really is for show, according to the Smith Tech, it cannot be on the Compliant models.

Bottom line I believe will be that your LGS will only sell what has been determined to be Compliant by the law. After you get the gun you no doubt will do what you will with it but when it leaves the store it will be proper. Kinda the same thing happens when you send a gun in for repairs, your unauthorized modifications most likely will be removed and factory parts put it there place.

Howard, you are correct, the compensator is totally cosmetic. I dont think anyone would really argue that a .22LR needs to be compensated. That being said, the plain straight barrel just looks like it is incomplete.

I didn't foresee the issues with the barrel nut but it is presenting an issue. I just need to think about it and do some handywork to get around it.

My point is that you have more options in regards to models of the 15-22. Just realize that necessary measures must be taken to ensure that it is legal. Maybe I can save someone the headache that I have run into with the barrel nut. Like I said, I didn't foresee that.

I beg to differ with one of the M&P's you show as NJ Compliant. The 811033 is definitely "not" compliant. It comes with a 25 round mag, adj. stock and compensator. Can't have that according to the law in NJ.

Like I have said before, dealers in NJ will "only" sell Compliant M&P's. The ones I've spoken to will not modify any gun to be compliant. The Sku # 811031, 811047, 170337 and 811052 look like the only ones acceptable. IMO, nothing wrong with any of them. Except maybe the pink one, for me. :)
