Default New gun ammo test

Took my M&P15-22 MOE FDE to the range for the first time last weekend. As is highly recommended, I wanted to try out a few brands of ammo to see what it will eat. I had thoroughly cleaned/delubed the rifle and then applied a liberal coating of FinishLine lube the night before.

Ammo which I tested:
Federal Automatch
Winchester SuperX
CCI Mini-Mag 36g

I wasn't worried too much about the Mini-Mags since they are the darlings of the 22LR world. However, over time I had slowly built up a stockpile of Winchester SuperX, so itd be cool if it fed and fired successfully in the M&P15-22.

Anyway, to make a long story short, all three brands fed and fired successfully. I went through over a 100 rounds across the three brands with a large bias towards the Winchester SuperX, and I only had 2 or so failure-to-feeds but I'm guessing that was more because of my haphazard attempt to make sure the rounds were staggered alternatingly in the magazines. A slight tug on the charging handle and I was able to slide the stubborn isolated round home.

So, I was stoked and had a silly grin on my face when I left the range.

Congrats on the new rifle, and I think a lot of us here have experienced that same silly grin.

I guess it is just luck of the draw, I had a completely different experience. Yes I am jealous.

I should mention that the rifle seemed pretty dry when I cleaned it for the first time, so if its not cycling as expected make sure you try lubing it more. I used FinishLine lube because Im also a cyclist (when work allows) and have an ample supply of it, but its also highly recommended for firearms. I readily noticed it cycled A LOT easier once I applied it.

Don't get carried away with the lube! This is not an AR and shouldn't be lubed like it is one.

The only things that actually need lubrication are the pivot points in the FCG and the bolt carrier rails, and even that should be used sparingly. A drop of CLP or similar on the extractor pivot point and on the bolt latch can also be used. There's no need for lubrication on the bolt body as the fit in the upper is so loose lube has no real effect. Running a 15-22 wet, will do nothing but attract unburned powder and burned powder residue, gumming thing up and actually slowing down the action.
