I am currently using Magpul XTM rail covers on my 15-22. I like the look, but they make the fore end too thick/big around for my taste. Are there any rail covers out there which provide a lower profile for the 15-22?

Yes I should have boght a MOE version, but I was lucky to get this rifle at the time.

Thanks

I love the Larue clips. Actually love all Larue product. They don't take up much room & you only put them where you need them. If later you want to attach say a tactical light, just pop off the few clips in the way. Some like to use the clips in every other slot. Thinking our moderator Phil does that. Come in several colors & have seen where some folks mix the colors.

The ladder style rail covers are by far the the lowest profile. That's what I use and that's what I like. A criticism of them is that they leave the top part of the rail exposed, and only protect the slots. Doesn't bother me, but if that is an issue for you, Ergo makes very slim rail covers in their "slim line rail covers" or "diamond plate" rail covers (not quite as low profile)

I don't like the look of the slim-line ones, but they are SLIM! The diamond plate ones are alright IMO, but might not be much less than the magpul ones you are using.

I sold all my XTM panels also. Went to the Army/Navy store and got some cheap ladder rail covers. Perfect...

I appreciate all of the responses. I decided to go with the LaRue clips.
Thanks a lot RedNeck Jim - except I had to buy a cap and a Dillo along with the rails. :)

You are welcome. I bit of bad news for you however. Larue has always added a free Dillo with every order I've ever placed with them. :) That plus some free BBQ rub.

I have S&W Rail Covers on mine, I assume they came with my S&W M&P 15T when it was new, I bought it from the 1st owner and they were loose in one of the boxes that came with the rifle, I really like them because their different, I have not seen others but I am sure they are around. I use ladder rail covers on my MP15T and magpul xtms on my DTI AR15.

PS-I collect LaRue Dillos and that LaRue Rub is addictive...try it on popcorn, grilled/boiled corn, everything!!:D

I only run the ladder style covers on my ARs. So I naturally added them to my M&P15-22.

I've run the Tangodown covers as well as the XTM covers from Magpul. I also have Knights Armament covers. All were just to think for my personal taste.

I now stick with the Magpul ladder covers. I actually think Ergo makes them for Magpul. They are super lean on your rails.

I recommend not buying the knockoff ones if you plan to run your gun hot. The knockoffs fall off in the heat.

Just my 2¢.

Yeah, I have the Ergo ones on my 15x, pretty satisfied with them.

I can see heat being an issue with 5.56mm and larger caliber, but do you think the 15-22 can generate enough heat for it to be a problem with the cheaper ladder covers? Cause I'm looking to get some cheap ones for my 15-22 just to match the look/feel of the 15x, but if they can't take even .22lr heat I'll just have to spend a bit more I suppose.

I have the cheap, 3 for $10, ladders on both my 15-22s and have never had a problem with heat affecting them, even when the barrel is too hot to hold on to.

$30+ for ladders for a 15-22 is insane, IMHO.

I agree on that last part. Thanks for the feedback, appreciate it.

I have no clue if the M&P15-22 can get that hot. I've never run the cheaper ladders on it. I just learned my lesson from my AR and have never bought them again.

Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.

$30 is barely the price of one FDE mag. Hardly insane. But to each their own. I run my M&P like its Noveske big brother. Buy once cry once. I'm the same with optics. I understand that ladder covers are not a big deal. However, if you pay a little extra you never have to ask the question "if" they will hold up. Just knowing is worth the $20 extra dollars.

For me NOT paying the extra is insane. :-)

ERGO Ladder Rail covers. They fit into the rail slots (so they don't add any bulk to the rail) and the colors match perfect (I had the cheaper ones and the color was off; more of an issue I'd imagine if you have something besides black like I do).

Search Amazon with: ERGO Grip Ladder LowPro Rail Cover
$23 for three ladders.

Two 15-22s ... 15k on one and 10k on the other ... Original cheapie ladders on both and no ne are melted or otherwise unserviceable. All still look and feel new.

To each his own, but paying $15 for ONE is is just ego.

This is the best option.

As said earlier Search Ergo on Amazon. $23 for 3.

Ego? I understand your feelings completely every time I see my neighbor drive up in his Rolls-Royce. I keep telling myself that all cars are the same quality. Oh wait........

If your logic were true then spending ANY money to upgrade grips, stocks, and sights would all be EGO since the factory grip, stock and sights work just fine.

And as stated before.. No one said that the knockoff ladders would fall off from the heat of a .22LR. It's awesome that yours didn't. That's super great. But it's hardly ego that others didn't take that chance. Doesn't make either wrong or either ego..

Whatever you say ... I yield to your obviously superior logic.

Honestly nothing superior about it. And I love the sarcasm. ;-)
But you make very valid points.

Some people spend extra buying several different charging handles while others think the stock one is fine. Both work just fine. Just like the different ladder covers.

My personal opinion is simple, why would I call spending extra money for different ladder covers ego if I were willing to spend extra money on several different charging handles ect... Same difference. It's all where each person choses to spend the few $ extra.

What is "needed" and what is not seems to be a matter of individual preference. Which I think is great.

By the way I enjoy reading all your post in other threads. Very helpful.
