Default Ammo Comparison with Pictures

Woke up this morning and decided to do an impromptu ammo comparison of all the various types of 22LR I have after work. The shooting took place at my local indoor range at 25 yards with a 3-9x40 scope and a bipod from a bench. I used the CCI AR Tactical as the control ammo. Five shots each ammo.

First up: CCI AR Tactical

Federal Target Grade Performance

Winchester Super X Round Nose

Winchester Super X Hollow Point

CCI Mini-Mags Hollow Point

CCI Velocitor

CCI Stinger

Federal American Eagle

Federal Lightning

Closed out with the control ammo again, CCI AR Tactical

As I suspected, the CCI AR Tactical was very consistent. During the shoot, there was one Failure to Fire from the Winchester Super X Hollow Point. This ammo had the best group, but only 4 of 5 shots went down range.

I then decided to shoot 25 rounds of the following: CCI AR Tactical, Winchester Super X Hollow Points, Federal Target Grade Performance, and Federal Lightning. No failures. Pics below.

CCI AR Tactical

Winchester Super X Hollow Point

Federal Target Grade Performance

Federal Lightning

The Winchester M-22 ammo has been unavailable in my geo area. I really am hoping to find some soon because I want to try it. I also am itching to try some Aguila SuperMax High Velocity - I think it is at 1750 fps!

Just a reminder for new shooters ...

The results are for his rifle. You may or may not get the same or similar results in your rifle.

The M-22 ran really well for me with not a single failure in 500 rounds. It also seemed to run very clean with not much cleanup afterward. It was also more accurate than I am so I will defiantly be on the look out for more.

Very good ammo comparison. Very methodical... I like it!

The benchrest shooter in me says you should have bore snaked the barrel between each brand and ran 10 rounds through the barrel before putting your test on paper. Even so, looks like you did a great job.

FYI, I'm a fan of M-22 as well. Shoots great in my rifle and not much dirtier than any other round in my opinion.

Thanks for the kind words, folks. I went and "tested" some more yesterday because I picked up two more different brands of ammo. Shot ten rounds of Aguila Supermaximum Hyper Velocity Solid Point. Average accuracy, no problems feeding/ejecting/firing. I also found some Remington Yellow Jackets. I was a little weary of the Yellow Jackets. Until I shot them - they were freaking fantastic! Most accurate round yet, and not a single problem. I will post pics when I get back next week, but for those of you considering this round for the M&P 15-22, I highly recommend it.

Just a suggestion with the Super Max, Stingers, and Yellow Jackets. Back out to 50 yards and compare them to another accurate round tested at 25 yards. Then go out to 75 yards. You'll likely see the groupings open up significantly compared to the basic high-velocity rounds.

If you want to see even tighter groups, buy some sub-sonic or match grade (1050 fps or so) ammo. Thoses should group a little tighter than any rounds you've run so far.
