Default Recommendations for a GOOD Laser bore sighter

Hi,

Been trying to zero in my M&P 22-15 and currently am using a Sight-Rite laser bore sighter. It is in 22LR cartridge, but the battery case is attached by a flimsy wire. I tried to use this yesterday at the range and was afraid to close the bolt since I thought it would cut or damage the wire. I was sighting in at about 15 yards and could barely see the laser on the target. After several attempt with it and my MBUS sights, I gave up.

Anybody know of a really good bore sighter that does NOT cost a fortune and that older eyes can see well? I have a Vortex Razor 3MOA red dot on the way and want to be able to sight this in without a huge aggravation.

Thanks!

KH

Just curious...are you not able to get on paper without the bore sight? I've never used one. I always take the upper off of my ARs, remove the bolt, and pick a spot about 50yds away (recently been using a neighbor's outdoor spot light as my target) looking through the barrel. Put my red dot on that spot, and never had an issue finishing up the zeroing in at the range. Obviously adjust that to 15yds if that's what you'd prefer.

The bore sight light was very faint and looked like a half-moon, not a dot. I don't have my red dot sight yet and have no magnifier. With my older eyes, even zeroing at 25 yds is hard with my MBUS sights. I do have a Votex Razor 3MOA red dot on the way.

There are so many bore sight lasers out there that I don't know what to get. This Sight-Rite was only about $25, but wasn't good in my opinion.

Academy bore sighted my scope when I bought it, but the fine tuning was done at 100yds with a Caldwell Lead-Sled and a spotting scope.

BTW, the Lead-Sled and spotting scope are offered as free loaners at my SCDNR range.

I use a site-lite SL-100. Works good enough to get you on paper at 25 yards, then the rest is up to you. It goes in the end of the bore though, so you might need to remove your flash suppressor if you have one.

I would save your money....get a large sheet of paper, put the largest 'shoot n c' target and sit down remove the upper and bore sight the rifle to first get on the paper at 15 yards. Then start firing and just walk the rounds to the 'shoot n c'. After that pick the rifle offhand and fine tune to your grip, stance, etc.

I sighted my 15-22 this way at 25 yards...on the paper from the bench, then offhand to get the finer detail. I only shoot this rifle offhand. Sight it to how you shoot it.

I've use two types with equal success. One is a cartridge shaped laser that fits in the chamber and is activated by closing the bolt or lowering the hammer and firing pin (gently). The same laser has several sized sleeves to fit various calibers.

The other is a slender cylinder with a tapered top that fits in the crown, and a long tail with an expanding plug that fits in the bore. Batteries are internal, and the laser is activated by twisting the cap.

Cabelas has both types in stock, with red or green lasers. Some come with a level and a diffaction cap which produces a horizontal line for leveling the scope. That's a nice thing to have.

As noted above, you can usually get the shot on paper at 25 yards, and go from there.

Let me first say, I probably don't understand the use of a bore sight. The range I go to offers free bore sighting and did watch as they bore sighted my Marlon 22 to get me on the paper @50 yards, it worked and I adjusted my scope from there.

With my 15-22, I used the iron sights @25 yards, got it where I wanted, then added my red dot. I have a bi-pod on it so I was able to hold fairly steady. I'm able to see my iron sights through the red dot. I adjusted the red dot until it was right on the iron site, flipped down the iron sites, put several rounds on the paper and tweaked the red dot just a bit. (just did this yesterday)

After zeroing in everything, I was able to get a 1 1/4" POI, a whole mag (25rds) twice. Once with CCI mini mag and once with Federal Auto match, almost identical POI.

Was the 1 1/4 inch POI offhand or benched off the bipod?

I always bore sighted my rifles at 50 yards through the barrel then went to live ammo at 25 and walked it in. I have used a laser bore sight I got from Amazon and it was OK. Mine wasn't snug when it sat in the barrel so I have to hold it in place. But that may be due to the brand I bought. Use whatever works for you or check with your local range if they lend it out.

Ghostmutt,
Are you kidding lol, offhand I'd be lucky to hit inside the "big circle" or maybe even the paper at all, that was with a bi-pod.
My biggest problem is my eyesight. I have glasses for everyday use and for the computer. I think I'll look into a pair for shooting.

At 25 yards, i have offhand 10 shot groups like this

Resting from elbows off the bench at 25 rounds 10 shot groups like this....

The rifles accuracy and consistency can be seriously effected by a loose barrel nut....do you have the tool to tighten it? If so i would do so. If not get one! I also am a glasses wearer, luckily my optician knows i shoot and makes my lenses accordingly. Sometimes its a pain, but at least i don't have to fork out for shooting glasses as well....eyes and ears and all that

I used this one this weekend to sight in my M&P15 and my M&P15-22. It worked well. I was sighted in less than 5 minutes. I have the red laser version, which can be hard to see on a sunny day. The green laser one is more expensive. You can also use it on pistols.
