Question for CT residents...

Hi All!

Happy New Year. Quick question: I live in CT and for those who know, we have a million gun laws and sometimes it's very difficult to get a straight answer about what is legal and what isn't regarding a firearm and accessories. I got a M&P 15-22 for Christmas and I want to put a SLIP ON (non threaded) barrel shroud. I did a few Google searches regarding it, but majority of the articles addresses ARs and threaded barrels. BCM (Bravo Company USA) has the barrel shroud I want for sale, but I wanted to make sure it's legal before I purchase it. Could anyone give me an answer regarding the legality of this, please? Thanks!

Preface that I am NOT a lawyer. But as I read the law as long as the barrel is not threaded the shroud is legal.

Now if you added a thread adapter to the barrel, that may or may not be legal, I could see one argument that it made the barrel threaded or another that the adapter is threaded but the barrel is not, since the adapter is not rifled and does not contact the bullet it is not part of the barrel. Ironic in that suppressors are legal in CT but a threaded barrel on a semi-auto rifle is a problem.

I agree. CT makes my head hurt. I did a little more research and spoke with my LGS and they also said it's not clearly stated in the law, but a slip on (non thread of any sort) should be fine because it literally slips on and you take a small screw and hex wrench and screw it down on the top and it stays. I was just wondering if anyone in CT has done this because that plain barrel is not fun to look at. Lol. Thanks for the help.

don't add a vertical front grip to it either, I seem to recall that being on the evil feature list. .22lr is only allowed one, and the pistol grip takes it. That's why 10/22's are ok with a threaded barrel as long as they don't have a thumbhole or folding stock. I've had mine long enough it is registered as a "evil assault weapon" so I can pretty much do as I want.

Hey there. This is good to know. I have the magpul angled front grip...it's the low profile version. It's more of a palm rest. I hope this is okay. Thanks for letting me know.

Actually I think I was wrong, no mention of vertical front grip..

(A) A semiautomatic rifle that has an ability to accept a detachable magazine and has at lease two of the following:
(i) A folding or telescoping stock;
(ii) A pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the action of the weapon;
(iii) A bayonet mount;
(iv) A flash suppressor or threaded barrel designed to accommodate a flash suppressor; and (v) A grenade launcher;

I am looking into it for my rifle also.
I couldn't find any language stating barrel covers are illegal.
Maybe ask your local dealer ?

Hi Tom. It's Greyson's Guns in Orange. I've bought my three guns from there. Great people and nice store. Anyway, I asked one of the staff members if it's illegal and he said it shouldn't be a problem at all. He went upstairs to confirm it with another worker and they said the same. I was looking at purchasing it from Tacticool22 where it literally says it's a "non-threaded" barrel. Please let me know if you find anything as well. Thanks.

I am actually waiting for a response back from tacticool about the fitment of the shroud on the 15-22 Sport. I'll pass along any response I get.

That's the issue. I measured mine and it's 5 1/4 from end of handguard end cap to end of barrel. I don't want any gaps anywhere so that should be a 'custom' length to get it right. Don't know why they don't make it exactly to size for the Sport ? I might be doing something wrong. I have to wait on them for the proper awnser.

I'm with you. I don't want a gap either. I want the barrel completely covered. I thought all compliant issued 15-22s had the same length.I haven't measured mine yet because I wanted to know if it were legal first. I'd be waiting to hear what the results are. Thanks a lot.

Okay, I just got off the phone with them. I spoke to a guy named Jody (I think that's his name). I asked him if it were legal in CT and of course he said he wasn't an attorney, but he didn't see the issue with a non-threaded barrel shroud. I also asked him about the length of the barrel. I told him I wanted it fully covered. He said to get the 6 inch (the 4.5 inch will leave a gap) and take off the end cap ring (it has 4 slots) then slip on the barrel shroud then put the ring back on. We don't need a tool to do that. Because we live in a world of equal opportunities and choice....(well one can dream) there are also kinetitech barrel shrouds available

Strike industries also do a dummy suppressor but this has a threaded end so it may be a no go for some states?

I am sure there are more...but that being said you can't really go wrong with Tacticool 22 products...just giving you more options to confuse and annoy you

Oh and the end cap? most of us ditch that, it serves no purpose! talking from the original 15-22 not the sport version. Your call

So we have to remove the magpul end cap to get the 6 inch to fit ? When it extends under the handguard ,how do we reinstall the end cap ? This is my whole area of concern.
So the video as helpful, but it was done on an older version of the rifle with a different handguard.
Does anyone out there have a pic with it installed on a newer 15-22 Sport ? I think that's what we need to see.

my rifle doesn't look like this now but hope this gives you guys an idea on how the shroud fits.

Yes, it's the older version, but the guy said it's easy and it just snaps in place.

Just take the end cap off and throw it in your spare parts bin. The longer 6 inch barrel shroud that goes under the handguard will look much better. Now you have also free floated the barrel to the extent that is possible until we have actual aluminum uppers for these little rifles
