Maybe a broken bit off the trigger spring. Pull out your trigger and check it out. You tube is your friend here.

I'll have to do that. Just wanted some ideas before I start tearing stufff apart. I looked down in there and didn't see much missing. Just really blows my mind since I've only had the rifle for 2 months and 500 rounds through her.

Easy enough job to check it, punch out the hammer pin, punch out the trigger pin and you will see straight away if that rogue piece is from your hammer or trigger spring....if it is get yourself the JP yellow spring set.
Short of getting a new FCG this is quite a good fix, will bring your trigger pull to about 4.5lb.
Had them in mine until i upgraded the FCG.

Looks like the hammer spring to me too. You should be able to check it without removing pins. As noted earlier, You Tube is a great resource for this. Just watch some of the AR lower build videos. An easy fix.

J-spring for sure. My 15-22 was missing it from the factory. That's why my hammer pin kept sliding out of the receiver.

Did you have them fix it or did you do it yourself?

I would avoid the hassle of sending it to S&W and just order a new spring and replace it myself. It's fairly easy to do.

I'd call it a good excuse to drop in a better trigger group and more appropriate length trigger/hammer pins.

I've dealt with S&W customer service a few times before and wanted to avoid it again. I just ordered some KNS 15-22 hammer/trigger pins kit.
KNS Non-Rotate Trigger/Hammer Pins for S and W M and P15-22

Ours went rogue on my daughter yesterday at the range and was firing on reset and even did a couple of double fires, 1 on pull and 1 on reset. Found that same chunk of spring laying inside her rifle when we got home from the range and the pin had walked out a bit as well.
Calling S&W on it now to send it in.
Edit: got off the phone with CS a few minutes ago, very helpful and a shipping label is already in my inbox. So far so good.
