Do you prefer red dot or scope on your 15-22?
Recently traded my scoped 10/22 for a 15-22 and need an optic for it. Just wondering what the majority prefers..
So, without all the questions about intended purposes, etc..
What does everybody like on their 15-22?
Thanks!

I have a 3x12 scope and an RMR on a 45' angled rail. Can't recall the last time I used the RMR...makes the rifle look all operatorish though.
In fairness my 5 year old son likes the red dot and while teaching him fundamentals it is easier than getting eye relief and sight picture on a scope.

I use mine to shoot steel challenge so red dot is a must. If I were just target shooting where speed was not a concern I would go with a scope.

Don’t have a 15-22, but I have a Colt lower with a dedicated AR15 upper/CMMG conversion kit. Tried a red dot, but it didn’t give me the precision I needed for small critters. I am currently using a Leupold 3-9. Works great!

I have an old Primary Arms red dot on it. I've never really tried to run any magnification on it. If I shot farther, I wouldn't be opposed to it.

Well, here's how I see it. If I consider its intended purpose, etc, ..... I couldn't resist.
Red Dot. Vortex Venom w/ Vortex QD riser.

I have two colt 6920s one with a Aimpoint PRO the other with a Trijicon MRO, so I would have to vote red dot, if I ever needed more distance,I'd put a 3X magnifier on the Aimpoint.

I ended up buying a Nikon P-Rimfire 2-7x32 and the nikon P series 2 piece mount..
I was really trying to talk myself into a TRS 25 to save some money, but, I have a Vortex Sparc AR on my 5.56 AR and thought if I put a red dot on the 22 it would be too similar, so I switched it up and went scope.. I enjoy taget shooting from a rest, but we will see if I keep it.. I may return it and just slap a red dot on it and be done.
For anyone interested I bought the Nikon P-Rimfire from academy on Clearance for $101 (last one too).. these scopes are still selling on optics planet for $180.
I'm sure this will be a great scope, but I dont shoot often and dont like having too much money tied up in optics that i use once a year. I was out the door for $161 for scope and mount.. If I went TRS 25 i could be out the door for $60

I know you said you don't want to get into the usage, but it really does depend on what you want to do. For fast plinking or shooting steel you probably want a red dot. For precision shooting or hunting small critters you need a scope.

A short rifle.....
When it starts getting into carbine territory and close in, quick acquisition is the name of the game. which is how I shoot one. I prefer offhand shooting over bench and 100 yards is about max for me, unless the target is an elephant painted safety orange.

TSR 25 on the 15-22.......fast shooting out to 50-75 yds....... B-27silhouettes at 100
Leupold scopes on the "precision" CZ rimfire bolt guns. CZ are the best bang for the buck going in rimfire rifles IMO. I've gotten them in .22lr .17hmr and .22 mag. all shoot MOA or better at 50yds and the .17 and .22mag are MOA at 100.
optics are IMO ......... Purpose driven.
Similar set ups on my .223/5.56 ARs and CZ 527s
Yes I really like the CZ rifle offerings.....................

I use the Burris 336, It's the best combination of a red dot and a scope. Use the same Burris on my AR 15. 3X power for distance with a cross hair reticle Inside a circle red/green dot for close in targets.

Can’t seem to find a Burris 336. There is a Burris AR-332, and an AR-536, however. Do you mean one of these?

I'm sure thats what he means. The 332 is a 3x and the 536 is a 5x. I have one on a full size AR and one on a 15-22. I really like them and prism optics in general. My favorite is the Vortex Spitfire 3x. The one sitting on my other 15-22 have seen well north of 100k rounds and still maintains zero.

I don't consider my 15-22 a precision rifle nor do I attempt to use it that way. ( I have others for that.) So for me, the gun doesn't warrant expensive optics. I keep both a UTG 3-9 Bugbuster Scope and a Bushnell TRS-25 red dot in the case with the rifle. Both are on QD mounts so pop on off in seconds as the situation suggests. The red dot gets used most of the time but the scope is there when I need to shoot smaller targets at 75-100 yds. Total investment was about $120 and it gives me allot of flexibility.

Not sure yet. Bought a scope and need a spacer to fit my fat face, even after buying extended base rings. Just ordered a red dot, too to see which I prefer. If I prefer the scope, the red dot will wind up on a handgun.

I like both, depending on what I am doing, if I’m shooting middle distance I’ll use scope/magnified...
If I’m shooting CQ then a red dot is perfect.
Best of both worlds is Eotech with G33
Was gonna quip about huntin Tali with my souped up gatt, then decided not too. Can’t be doing with snarky comments for the guys who don’t get or understand British humour (or spelling for that matter)...

I didn't like the accuracy of the red dot on my 15-22 so I plan to mount it on my home defense Mossberg shotgun, for the M&P 15 22 I mounted a 4 power scope which works great.

Primary Arms / Me Too

I totally agree with your choice for sights. I have the primary arms red dot on mine too. For what a .22 LR is capable of the red dot
allows fast on target and I've found the PA sight very accurate.
Now if I was shooting at mice heads off a ways__a scope may do well.
But, here on the Sonoran Desert I'll leave the mice to the coyotes.
One of their main dishes.
I wouldn't object to a regular reflex but the PA sight has better protection against bumps.
For those who prefer a scope__I'm perfectly alright with that too.
One of my reflex sights ( Shield RMS) on my Shield has a feature I like and would work well with these rifles too__ zero once and leave it on constantly. (There are no buttons) The battery will last two to three years. Worried about battery dying when out shooting? Just change batteries once a year. They're inexpensive and the Shield has a drawer that comes out the side for changing
batteries.
I have the Romeo 1 on my P320. I'm leaving it on constantly too.
Since the dot goes off when there's no motion and comes back on
instantly when you move the pistol___I'm seeing how long the battery lasts. (Not suggested by Sig but....giving it a go )
As more and more are discovering and actually using these red dot sights___ It won't be long before they become common ___ and maybe less $$$?
Stay safe

I used a fixed 4 on my gun for a while. It works well if you do your part. Sorta like an ACOG. Won a couple of matches with it in that guise. Have switched back to a RDS style sight. Still awesome either way.
I would not, personally, use a magnification higher than 4 because of the style of shooting I do. There are better guns for plinking at 100m+ than the 15-22.

Had a cheap reddot on my MP15-22 for a couple months but switched to a Nixon p-rimfire 2×7×32 much more accurate now especially at 50 yds

I am running a Bushnell AR223 1-4x scope that has an illuminated dot/ horseshoe reticule. Best of both worlds, quick acquisition and magnification if needed.

ANOTHER OPTION CHOICE NEEDED, NONE!
The trend that ALL rifles MUST HAVE an optical sight, often a WAY too big & over magnified hubble telescope (for a lowly 22)is simply false & at times makes things worse than the (2 different sized) peep sights that come with the rifle. Vision/ acquisition speed/ intended use/ range/ field of view/ personal preference matter. A smaller sized low powered variable scope in the 1-3, 1-4, 1.5 x 5 should handle "about" anything for a 22 LR, with it's "short" range IMO.

I have a scope on my Ruger 10-22 for distance and precision. The S&W 15-22 will get a red dot for speed.

YOU MAY want to try a 1/2" riser.

My 15-22 is for speed and rimfire challenge events so it wears a 30mm no name Chinese red dot I bout online for less than NZ $30 (US$20) including delivery from China.
With it I can use the pop up iron sights for quick and dirty and switch to the red dot for slightly longer and more accurate shooting. But with both sights I can ring an 8" plate at 50 yards al day long
For running iron sights in competition I have to remove the dot, but I can simply reinstall it, pop up the sights and check the dot is right on the top of the front post within a few minutes.
I have two other "holographic" style red dots on .22's. Another semi and a lever action. The semi has no other sights, the lever still has the iron sights but they can't be used in the same way as the 15-22 ones can.
For accuracy at distance I have two bolt action .22's fitted with 4 X 32 scopes.
