My new MP 15 22 shoots fine, but I have trouble getting a good cheek weld with that butt stock,tried foam plugs but I could never keep them in place. Muffs keep getting in the way can't get a good sight picture!

There are some people who have ear canals that don't work well for plugs. I'd consult an audiologist if I had persistent trouble. It's far cheaper to pay to get good hearing protection than buy hearing aids later!

It took me at least a dozen brands/sizes/types of foam plugs.
Fairly early I found some that were good, but it took another 20 years before I found some that were great in terms of both comfort and noise reduction. Try a variety and read the instructions, watch videos, practice different insertion techniques.

I tried the DIY pour-in kit and found it lacking, the material was a bit hard and my ear canals would change from day to day so the seal would be better or worse depending. My GF got the fancy ones made and went back to foam plugs after a few years as well.

If you think the 15-22 is difficult to get a proper cheek weld on, try the keltec sub2000. It may be physically impossible for me to see down their iron sights!

I’ve got pretty decent 3M ear pro that have passive audio but they are just bulky. I’ve been tempted by some of these small custom ear pro that are designed around your ears, as like someone suggested my ears are always highly annoyed by earbuds.

One word: Suppressor. They're fun and subsonic .22 caliber is quieter than my Gamo .22 pellet rifle. I have a Dead Air Mask HD.

Of course, if you're shooting with others it's not gonna matter.

Friend of mine had the same problem.

Solution?

Fit a small riser under the sight to lift it up a bit. He's not had an issue since.

This might be a dumb question, but are you inserting the foamies properly (rolling, pulling the canal open, inserting)? The number of people I've seem properly insert them is about even with those that just try and jam em in, and the difference in both retention and effectiveness is huge.

3M has a good video on this.

We use Macks #5599 plugs and hold them in until they expand.

I use Mack's foam plugs. I roll them up as tightly as possible and insert deeply. I don't yank on my ear as recommended in the videos, though. They work very well for me. Muffs work well for pistol shooting when the weather is cool. They just get in the way when shooting a long gun, and they make me sweat too much when it's hot. The only problem I have with the foam plugs is now and then I will insert them too deeply and have to use a tweezers to get them out.

I've seen some people shooting with half the plugs sticking out of their ears. They offer very little noise reduction when used in that fashion.

If I’m just shooting outdoors and only 22’s i tend to use foam plugs. If indoors (or out with higher calibers) then i’m using muffs. I picked up some thinner ones that seem to help when shooting rifles, noting they are still a bit bulky as i have both my prescription glasses and safety glasses on.
On my Sport 2 i added a foam recoil pad, not that it needs it recoil wise but i like the little extra length overall it gives me. Seems to help where i hold with muffs on then, though that strictly could be in my head lol.
