I have the M&P 15-22 with the optics and pic rail. I googled photos of AR15s and *thought* that the flip up sights flip forward, toward the muzzle. I installed my aftermarket flip up iron sights that way. I noticed that the front sight, when down, extends past the tip of the front of the rail. Then I got the brilliant idea to see how S&W does there's. It looks like their flip ups flip down in the opposite direction, toward the receiver.

This is a range/training/Project Appleseed rifle that will see light, gentle use. Transporting in it my car on California's dilapidated roads will be the worst abuse it will likely suffer.

Edit: I'm left-handed and left-eyed, if that's a factor helpful in giving me advice in this matter.

Other than the purists giving me a hassle, is there any disadvantage to having the sights installed the wrong way?

I find it to be a great advantage to be able to use the same hand to raise and lower both sights

Thanks.

I forgot to mention (will put in the post) that I'm left-handed, if that's a factor of importance.

I'm not shy to admit that I'm still a newbie, a "beginner's mind," literally and figuratively.

Normally receiver sights are mounted as far back as possible so if yours was overhanging the front of the receiver, it was too far forward no matter which direction it was facing.
The peep sight disc normally has one side flat and the other side recessed to produce a sharper hole. The flat side is toward the shooter’s eye. If your sights have both sides flat, it makes no difference which way it faces.

As it comes from the factory ( and my understanding of proper installation) is the front sight when folded the front sight post would point toward the receiver, and when the lever activated pop up and flip forward toward the target.
The rear sight is mounted the same way.

Typically, the longer sight radius is easier on the eye communicating with the brain resulting in more accurate hits.

That is affirmative. On any AR platform that is the way flip-up iron sights are to be PROPERLY mounted.
