Three weeks ago, I bought a bulk pack (500 rounds) of Aguila Super 40 grain copper-plated round nose ammo. It was sold in a plastic bag within their standard box. When I first opened the bag and scraped out some rounds, they appeared sticky like coated in semi-dried pancake syrup. Then, it appeared they had a very fine sand like grit on them. Long story short, tried them in my 6 pistols and 2 rifles. Endless failures to extract and very frequent FTF. Clean ups of those guns was very messy. Neither of my pistols or rifles ever had these issues with ammo. Finally ended up trashing 200 rounds of it. Lots of discussion here about Armscor 22LR. Never had similar issues with Armscor. Aguila Super 40 grain copper-plated round nose ammo is no longer on my purchase list.

Why was it sold in a Plastic Bag?
Have shot a fair amount all sold in regular Factory Boxes.
Don’t recall any failures.
It seems to shoot strong and Dirty.

Thanks for the report: I've always found (Eley-primed) Aguila to be great ammo . . . albeit with a funnier smell than usual.

Sounds like someone tried to make an enchilada of them. I've not had a problem getting them in the boxes. Sorry yours didn't work out.

You should have called them and see what they had to say. Might have sent you another box. You won't know unless you ask.

Back when you couldn't get US manufactured. 22 lr, Aguilla was available and I shot a ton of it. Still have some actually. What you describe doesn't sound normal. The lube was always kind of waxy/sticky, and probably contributed to the dirty residue left after shooting, but my biggest complaint was the smell of the Eley priming compound. That and the extra cleaning was a small price to pay to be able to shoot regularly and affordably. And they ALWAYS came in boxes, not bags. Weird.

I have about 1500 rounds of that ammo on hand. It is in a sealed packages, inside cardboard boxes. Does it stink, yes, is it dirty, yes. Due to the "dirty" my 4 revolvers do not like that ammo. When it is gone I probably will not buy again as long as other brands are avaliable.

I've shot a bunch (several cases (not brick)) - no problems so far. It does have a distinctive odor.

Just out of curiosity. How did u trash them? Pull bullet from every casing?

Could probably tumble them in corn cob media and clean up the goo.

Never been happy with Aquela .22 ammo.

Funny this topic came up. I just put 150 rounds or so of this through my brand new 617. Accuracy didn't impress me....even within 25 yards. Extraction was very sticky, and my shooting bench smelled like a litter box. However cheap it may be, I'll stick with paying a little more for something different. This stuff makes Remington Thunderbolts look good!

Have used only dozens of Super Colibri .22 Aguila rounds in non-semi guns. Never purchased bulk in a bag though. Never an issue. But I have also heard of their magnums ripping apart at the rim when fired.

I shoot their SV. never had any issues, haven't bought in a few years though

Have absolutely no idea how many rounds of Aguila I have fired in all sorts of .22 LR guns. Works extremely well in my S&W Model 18, a Marvel .22LR 1911 Conversion, my Ruger Standard and MK. II, any and all of my rifles. Been shooting it since the panic after the 2008 election cycle. Today will hopefully get to the local range. Will be using Aguila as well as CCI Mini-Mags. Expect no problems. Will say, have not ever found any .22 LR ammunition in plastic bags for sale with the paper carton enclosed. Given the issues cited in the OP, would be curious as to storage conditions, etc. Also, does it fire in a rifle? Do rounds fire if removed and reinserted so that a non-impacted portion of the rim is under the firing pin? Sincerely. bruce.

I've shot some Aquila 22. It won't cycle in my MKII. Can't say it's bad ammo but Shirley not as good as CCI SV. I bought 5K when it was cheap. Still shooting that case after about 5 years. No regrets.

I am mystified at some of the comments here. I have fired considerable quantities of Aguila SV .22, found it to be as good as any other brand. I have never seen any bagged bulk Aguila, just the typical 50 round cardboard boxes.

Bought it at local Sportsman Warehouse.

Check their website and you will see that bulk box for about $40.

No returns,exchanges, or refunds on ammo.

Jamming and misfires in Rossi 22LR Rifle and Smith and Wesson 15-22 rifle. Some would fire on second try. Extraction failure mostly I believe aimed at gritty coating on brass cartridge.

I bought 2 boxes 150-200 rounds each a couple of years ago. Each box contained ammo sealed I good quality plastic bags. I thought it was a nice touch and good protection against moisture.
Shot part of one box and everything was fine.
Maybe Aguila sells a lot of ammo to people in hot, humid, tropical Third World countries where transportation and storage are problematic because of the dampness. The ammo I bought may have been originally packaged for Third World markets, but later diverted to the US because our importers and distributors would pay a lot more for it.

I shoot five steel matches a month during the warm season;at least once a month during the winter. Reliability is my prime concern. My two go-to ammo choices for steel matches are CCI Blazer and Aguila Super Extra. I've shot tens of thousands of each and love them both.

Sorry about the OP's problems, but I've never had any.

I have shot over a case of Aguila copper plated 40 gr ammo with zero problems. Can’t say that about CCI or Eley! All of mine has been in the 50 round boxes, not bulk. Others I shoot with have had problems with the hollow point ammo in bulk packs. They must put the seconds in the bulk packs.

My go-to plinking .22lr ammo is CCI SV, Blazer, and Aguilla SV and Super Extra. All of them are good plinking ammo. I’ve found the Aguilla to be very reliable, and I get very good accuracy out of the Super Extra. I’ve bought it by the case, with the traditional bricks/boxes. That said, I recently grabbed a couple of the bulk boxes of the Super Extra, but haven’t opened it yet. I hope it’s not nasty like the OP’s…

Agreed. I stay away from Hertzer's after some really hot stuff broke a stock and got my attention. It was steel cased 7.62x51 not 22LR...

Never have had an issue with Aguila's. My favorite round for my .22s. Sorry you got a bad batch.

I agree Aguila is sticky and dirty. I have however never had
any problems getting it to fire. Armscour on the other hand is the poster child of duds in my experience.

I've never had a problem with Aquila ammo in my CZ rifle. But then bolt rifles will shoot almost anything.

I wouldn't recommend it for an auto loader.

I just got 1000 of the Aguila Super. I don't feel any "grit" and it's clean, but I haven't tried it in a gun, yet. I figure my revolver can chew through it if my semiautos can't.

Along with CCI Mini Mags, Aguila 40gr Super has been my go to .22 for years and, except for the aroma, never had a problem. Same with the SV which I use for casual plinking along with CCI SV in my Model 41, my Colt Match Target, and my Browning Buckmark. I'll continue to use it till it's all gone. Sorry your experience was so poor.

Like most cheap ammo, Aguila varies from batch to batch. Some of it really shoots well, some doesn't. I bought a case of standard velocity Aguila some years ago that had a number cartridges that didn't fire on the first pull of the trigger, but I never had this happen before or since. Regardless, I don't buy Aguila anymore. Consider spending a little more and get better ammo. CCI SV is a good place to start. Accuracy should be a concern for everyone.

I compete in a bullseye league with my S&W Model 41 and use only two ammunitions - CCI SV and Aguila SV. Have fired 10’s of 1000’s of each and both are equally accurate and reliable in my 41. No complaints with Aquila ammo.

I've shot many tens of thousands of rounds of 40 grain Aguila Super Extra, and it's my preferred .22lr ammo.

I always keep 10000-15000 rounds of it laying around.

Never bought it in a bag though.

In my experience, all Aguila .22 rimfire loadings are great.

I have shot a ton of it since the Chinese flu epidemic because it's all I could find. I've never had any problems with it and it's available at good prices. I can't say the same for Federal....it's unreliable garbage and more expensive.

I'm with you, it's the only ammo other than the CCI SV that I run in my High Standard. Plus I can get it for $125 a case/2,000.

In the distant past, I shot a lot of Aguila standard and match ammo and it was very reasonable and accurate enough for match practice. I decided to take my Sig P322 out to shoot yesterday. I hadn't cleaned it since my last outing. I mostly shoot Aguila (standard velocity) in it. The hood of the barrel had a lot of grit on it. It felt like sand. I thoroughly cleaned the pistol. I had one failure to fire out of 100 rounds and it ignited after a second try. I didn't detect any of the grit residue afterwards. I'll probably keep using Aguila.

I bought two boxes (first and last) when ammo was almost impossible to find. Shoots OK in revolvers and will work in my Sig P322. Will not cycle in my AR15-22 (HK 416 by Walther) or my friends S&W AR 15-22.

Now that ammo is available again, I'll stick to the old reliables.

I think they are having some QC issues. I’ve shot a bunch over the years and it was “ok”. Not great, but it worked. I bought a brick last Feb. they will NOR feed in any semi auto pistol (Sig 322, 2 Ruger standards) or rifle (Ruger 10/22, Marlin 60). Never, ever had this kind of issues with .22 in the past. I’ll not be buying more.

CCI Standard Velocity for me. Costs more but never failed. I've never tried Aguila. I believe Mr. Aronstein over at High Standard uses Aguila when he can't get CCI, and High Standards can be temperamental but shoot beautifully. Oh.... high-speed ammo is not recommended, at least for the original Hamden and Hartford pistols. May be a turn-off for some. My Hamden Trophy is very happy with the CCI SV. The revolvers seem to like it as well.

It sounds like these were from the 2nds that manufacturers sell occasionally to sporting goods stores at reduced prices.
