Slide will not come off new M&P 40
M&P Shield 40, year old but first time fired and after about five rounds the slide stop going all the way forward! It's goes almost all the way, except the last half inch! No mater what I do it will not come off! I don't want to send it back, so anybody have any Ideals?
Thanks all, I end up banging it on the back of the weapon and it came right off. Spring was still attached to the barrel, but notice like there was a gouge on the receiver like the barrel was rubbing on it for awhile! No I did not oil it before firing, my bad! After cleaning and oil it's working like a charm. I'm taking it to the range tomorrow, will be a little nervous though! I'll let you know how it went, if you don't hear from me it didn't go good! Peace all! Defend the NRA and GOA, so we can always have fun!

The only thing I can think of is the slide release spring came out of its groove. Do a quick search on here and do some reading and if thats it, I'm sure you'll identify the problem quickly. Report back with what you find.

Did you field strip and oil properly before firing? The stuff on it from the factory is not oil and should be wiped off and oil applied. Check NewtoGuns17 advice on slide release spring. It's an easy fix. It may also be the recoil spring is not seated properly.
You say the slide is stuck. Make sure the pistol is empty. Check again. Pull the trigger in a safe direction. Can you move the slide? If possible lock it back, turn the lever, let slide move forward. With the trigger pulled you don't have to move the yellow lever. Should pull off. If not see what's binding.

Or an out of spec round is preventing the slide from going in to battery. For that one it may take a vice, block of wood and a mallet or a local gunsmith.

This seems to be the likely issue.

Without being there and seeing it it's hard to judge exactly what's going on. It's all good.

Yeah, never assume anything where guns are concerned. I suspect an out of spec round, as well. You can check this by inserting a wooden dowel or a pencil in the barrel. Mark where it stops. Then using that as a guide, see where the end of the dowel stops outside the barrel. If it’s not at the breechface, there’s a live round in the barrel.

If there is a round that is stuck, I would remove the striker before doing anything else.

Had a shooter with the same symptom at my last IDPA match, using .40 FS M&P. Stopped the shooter, determined gun had cartridge stuck in chamber, cleared it, and DQed ammo, which was some low-quality steel cased foreign ammo.
Offered to let him finish match with my spare 9mm M&P, but he said he was too rattled.
I have not figured out how to predict when cheap ammo will cause problems in a specific gun. Some run it great, some choke, even "same models."
I keep a range rod, and clear guns before returning to the owners at an IDPA match.
