Which M&P is most popular?
Hi,
I want to get my hands on one of the best M&Ps of the line. Not sure that "best" is the right term. I do a lot of gun videos and get hundreds of requests to do something with the M&P. I've not shot them, but I have a feeling that I will really like them, maybe as much as my Glocks. Who knows. :-)
Anyway, I'm looking for advice. I'm not really all that familiar with the different models. Which M&P (or two) do you think would be the most interesting to see a good video / review on for most people? Obviously, I'm thinking a mid-size or subcompact in 9mm or .40 would be popular and guns that perhaps the most people would be considering?
Then on the other hand, maybe the .45 ACP would be cool to review. Like Glocks and others, I suppose they are essentially the same, so wringing out one should give people a good idea about others.
Thanks for any input.

Not sure what you have in mind, but could I suggest you look at the M&P section and read what has already been posted on this forum.
Several people have posted quite a bit about the M&Ps, including the differences and similarities to the Glocks, which you seem to be familiar with.
My choice in the M&P is the 9 Pro, which I chose to use in USPSA Production and IDPA/SSP. I am pleased with the choice, particularly because of its ergonomics (never made friends with the Glock grip), and find it extremely reliable.

Most popular MP
From what I see, MP 9mm FS is the most popular. At alot of
IDPA and USPSA matches , you see these. They are the size of
the MP 40 FS and 357 Sig FS. FS= full size. Pro is very nice . but
costs more, the 9c is fun to shoot. 9mm is cheaper ammo.
Good Luck

The compact guns are pretty popular. You could go with the 9c and the 40 FS. Since the 9mm and .40S&W are really identical in feel that would pretty much cover the whole, while the .45ACP is favored by some I think the .40 and 9mm are favorites. Just my 2 cents.

OKFC05, which barrel length did you get? it appears there are two barrel lengths for the pro 9mm. I am thinking about competion. ARe both lengths legal to shoot in either competition?

Welcome hickok45! I have enjoyed a few of your casual shooting vids.
Just pick up the cheapest one or two you can get your hands on. Honestly,,, I would not worry about caliber. I think you will find this family of pistol to be a very aggressive combat weapon. And I'm quite sure you will have no problems playing a tune on your range.
Will a M&P or two displace your Glocks? I haven't a clue. Seeing your a huge Glock Shooter.
Enjoy!!!!!

I would suggest the M&P 9c or 40c. I think they are the most popular. I know I've been wanting to see you do a video on these guns. They would also compare to the Glock 26, 27, 19 and 23. It's grip length is like the Glock 26, 27. The over all gun length is about the same as the 19,23. I would like to see how you think they compare to the Glocks. Thanks

I got the 5". Both are legal.
In theory at least, there is a little advantage to the longer barrel for competition.

Everything S&W is able to produce in the M&P pistol line is proving to be successful when it comes to demand and sales.
Personally, I tend to favor the M&P when it's chambered in .45 ACP.
While I do rather like my M&P 40c, especially compared to my G27 and the other .40's I own, if I had it to do over again I'd get the M&P 9c. The same great ergonomics, but the difference in controllability & recoil management is noticeable. They managed to make a compact 9mm that seems to handle, balance and shoot better than my favored 3913.
I have enough decent 9's and more than enough .40's, though, so the next M&P I plan to order is going to be another .45, this time the compact. I've decided I'd like to have the slightly smaller grip on the M&P 45c (compared to the Mid-size which uses the same full-size grip frame as my present M&P 45, but the shorter slide/barrel of the compact).
Something about the larger M&P pistol platform simply makes for a great .45 pistol. I actually enjoy shooting it more than my 1911's.
I've handled and shot a lot of different .45's over the years, including a fair number of the plastic ones, but the M&P 45 is the only one which made me want to spend my own money on one. Interesting.
S&W managed to carry off a rather neat trick, too. Using just 2 frames, slides and barrels they configured it into 3 different models.
Best regards.

for most popular at this point i'd choose the fs .45.
for your vidieo's i think using both the fs and a compact would give viewers the best of both worlds;
there is a real booming trend in cpl's with many states laxing the the regs. interest in compacts is only going to inprove.
for the compact i'd like to see a .357sig. it's a great self defense round that doesn't get enough exposure. it would really high light the compact line.

My M&P is a FS .45, But I wouldn't think it's the most popular caliber. And I'm in no hurry what so ever to run out and purchase a 9mm as my Sigma is just fine. Now if they ever made a 10mm I would be getting one in a big hurry.

Just my quick 2 cents. The 5 inch pro has a better sight radius (longer) and makes power levels easier. Competition is the only one with power levels. Real gun fights has survivor levels and the shorter barrel may be faster. I hope no one ever tests this theory. More inline with the thread, the 4.25 inch barreled M&Ps are the ones I have seen other people use. I shoot the 5" Pro. Wish I was as good as the M&P.

My personal guess would be more FS9's have been sold than any other model, but do not have any info to support this claim. I have a FS9 and a mid size 45 and enjoy shooting both, and if you want a 45 that handles similar to the FS9(actually same size) then the mid size is the one. I think the Raleigh police force ordered the mid size 45's a while back and haven't heard how the force likes or dislikes this model, so if anyone knows, post it! zorro49

Hello hickok45! I have truly enjoyed your videos and have watched some of them multiple times. My suggestion would be the 40c or the 45 compact. I'll be looking forward to seeing the videos.

I'll ad my 2 cents. I say review a 9mmc and a .40FS.
The 9mmc would be of interest to those of us with CCW permits. It's small in size. Has a good round capacity and is chambered for a respectably powered round yet it's not too hot for most, even the ladies, to handle well.
The .40fs. This is an ideal home protection gun. It's size makes it easy to handle. Has a large capacity of a proven self defense caliber used by many law enforcement agencies.

When I worked at Cabelas, the 9 and 40 seemed to sell better than the 45. The compacts did ok, but didn't sell as well as the full size. As to picking the 9 or 40, some days it depended on what ammo was on the shelf. I liked the feel of my 40, but bought it because I got a great deal. I prefer 45 in an auto.

I Have te 45c as well as the full size 40. The 45c is awsome it just feels good, well balanced and shoots very well. Even my friends that have glocks like the 45c.
I'm betting the 9mm compact is more popular however.

Hickok45! The best vids on youtube by far! I'm glad you're looking into the M&P's. I just got myself a .40 full size, so I have to check it out myself. How about I come to the compound and you can give it a whirl? haha Looking forward to your next vid....life is good!

Hickock45,
My vote also would be to do a vid on the .357 Sig, it's such a great round, very fun, very robust...and has been said already...doesn't get much exposure.

Hickok45, I stumbled across a few of your posts here and on the Ruger forum. From there I found your You-Tube site. I just want to say thanks sharing your expertise. I cant tell you how much I've learned watching those videos. I hope someday to be able to shoot as well as you do. I know you're a Glock guy but I think you'll like the M&P. Thanks again.

For good all round M&P, that you can take to the range (not competition ), conceal carry, decent ammo cost, caliber is good for self defense: M&P40C.
Great gun, recoil low, ammo almost as cheap as 9mm, easy to carry. I have the 9mm and .45, and this seem to have best of all worlds. Just my humble opinion.
You can also get a inexpensive barrel and fire 357sig with same magazines. Bonus.

Hickock45, your videos on Youtube are great -- entertaining and informative. In fact, I watched several of your videos in my info-quest for my first centerfire pistol. Thanks for all your help in that regard.
Sadly ( )... I did a little shoot-out tonight at the range between a Glock 19 (Gen 3 for us stuck in CA) and a M&P 9mm and the M&P won the vote for my dollars. The Glock 19 just didn't work for me when I had both guns in my hands at the same time. No biggie though... I had a great time putting 50 rounds through each gun for an hour! (I know, I know... only 50 rounds?!)
Please do post a link if you ever do a video of the M&P (any model) -- I'd be more than curious to see what your (very experienced) thoughts are!
Best regards. Life is good.

As mentioned in this post, Hickok45 has posted an initial impression of a used M&P40c he purchased.
YouTube - M&P 40c
As pointed out by some users, you can see that the slide on the (used) M&P40c that he acquired has a small crack on the slide near one of the rails.
Hopefully S&W will help him out. Overall, a nicely done video overview.

Dead opposite of popular. Go with the 357 SIG round in the duty size pistol. I have doubts about the execution of the round, but according to the FBI it is the best for self defense, then they bought the 10mm and .40 S&W.

FWIW, I heard of an apparent early machining issue which resulted in a couple of cracked slides at the slide stop notch, similar in appearance to what appears in the linked/posted picture.
I'd suspect S&W will replace it and I wouldn't worry about it as a matter of common occurrence.
As far as the .357SIG being considered the "best for defense" by the FBI?
The last info I read from them (admittedly a bit dated) indicated that while it did acceptably well enough in their ballistic testing, it wasn't considered to demonstrate any significant improvement over existing cartridges/calibers in common LE usage in their testing. They continue to use the .40 S&W as their primary service round (although they also apparently still permit some of their people to use 9mm weapons, hence their purchase of the bonded 147gr JHP's along with their .40 bonded load).
Maybe you came across something more recent, though. I haven't kept up on the FBI testing once they started restricting access to their ballistic testing by requiring letterhead requests for the info, signed by someone of at least supervisor rank.
