Has anyone compared the two? Am looking for a new small pistol and these two are in the running.

The MP C feels better.

I have never liked the XD. I think they are a disaster ergonomic wise.

I had both and just sold my XD. It was a great gun and I liked it a lot and would have kept it except that I get to a point when I look in the safe and recognize that I probably will not shoot a certain gun anymore for whatever reason and so I decide to sell it for gun money. The M&P is just smoother, thinner and a little more concealable. They both shoot great, and the XD is a just a little boxy.

M&Pc all the way. Actually just shot the 9mm version side to side with a Springfield XD sub compact 9mm today. After shooting about 10-15 rounds through the XD, I had to go back to the M&P. No contest. So much more ergonomic, functional, accurate, etc... I love the trigger on it over the XD or Glock or anything.

The only advantage of the XD is if you need to know whether a round is chambered in the dark, with your hands tied behind your back. I mean, come on...2 or 3 indicators? Nonsense. If you don't know at all times what is in your gun, you probably shouldn't have one. You especially shouldn't carry.

Anyways, the M&P is my next purchase, without a doubt. Stellar gun. Just practiced double taps today with about a box and a half of FMJ. Was able to keep them in 5 inch groups at 21ft. That is a massive accomplishment for me.

I ws actually thinking the XD-M 3.8 looked a little easier to handle. I agree that the XD compact feels kinda club like. The M&Pc would conceal alot easier though and give more fire power than my S&W 442.

I love S&W's as much as the next guy and have a safe full of S&W's (like most here) to back up those words. However when I wanted a subcompact plastic gun to make my 3913 and 6906 jealous, I couldn't decide between the XD subcompact .40 or the M&Pc .40.... so I bought them both (Buds has great prices).

I took them out of the boxes and headed for the range. Had some Winchester Ranger, Speer Gold Dot and Hornady XTP to try out. Also took some reloads that had some tight chambering problems in another gun. Most was 155 & 165gr but also took some 180 gr Blazer.

At 10 yds offhand hold, I was impressed with the M&P, it kept all shots in a 1 3/4"" bullseye circle. However what blew me away was the XD - all shots in one ragged hole! Not just once either, but consistently with multiple loads I put thru it ( neither like 180 gr loads)

I like the look and feel of the M&P and I like the smoothness of the trigger but my XD seems consistently more accurate with various ammo at all realistic ranges. The M&P did chamber & fire all of the faulty reloads that needed a slap on the back of the slide in the other gun. The XD fired most of them but did have a slightly tighter chamber and needed a couple slaps to seat a few. Since breaking it in I haven't had any ammo that didn't chamber in the XD, but out of the box, the M&P was more reliable with known faulty ammo.

I like the XD's visual chamber loaded indicator - not just at night when you can feel it (try looking down the little hole on the M&P in the dark, or even low light) but anytime I pick up the gun. Although everyone should treat all guns as loaded, I keep several around that are, and I can never tell if the M&P has one in the tube today... if I ever had to grab one I would look at the XD first.

I also like the XD's extra grip safety and ambi mag release (what's with the take-it-apart to reverse it nonsense S&W?). Carrying CCW, there are times I think the M&P is more comfortable in my waist and at other times I don't see any difference. The grip on the XD can protrude more in some carry modes, if your not careful. The factory mags are cheaper for the XD.

Although I like many things about my M&P I think the XD has better overall features and is, in my case, the better all around CCW defense weapon. OK, after looking at these old photos i guess either one would do in a pinch.

As much as I wanted to like the XD / XDM series of handguns, I just can't. I have gotten a few different models for T&E and while they feel pretty good in the hand, the slide mass and height just seems crazy to me (as somewhat illustrated below). It feels like the gun sits 1" higher in my hand than anything else on the market. While this is purely a matter of personal preference, I won't own an XD because of it. The XD compact I tested was accurate and reliable but I thought the M&P compact was a better weapon overall.

Just gave one of my favorite gun pushers an XD9SC to sell in favor of an M&P9C due next week.... I already have an M&P40C and Full Size.... The XD's just not what I wanted, although not all that terrible.

I originally bought the thing for my daughter, but the smoke & flame scared her. If she doesn't want the M&P, I do :D.... The XD was an "airline travel" gun for me for a while - one I wouldn't mind getting an insurance check for (preferrably on the return leg), but not that terrible. I just like the M&P's better....

Accuracy also seems to be better with the Smith's, but I think the M&P rear sights are just better. IAC, for a Self Defense gun that's probably irrelevant. Plenty close enough....

I also like working in/on the M&P more.... Nothing much to it.... And Apex has some great (and quite inexpensive) mods that make the gun a whole lot better for about $100 (more if you buy the RAM kit). Right up there in "feel" with a couple of circa 1968 S&W wheelguns that were among the best you could get "off the shelf" back then.

(My M&P40C is a "grubbys gun" - something to wear around the house that won't pull my jeans down. The Full Size was for the range. My EDC is one of a pair of small 1911's. I trust the little M&P, but I'm just better with the 1911.)

Regards,

I noticed on the S&W web site that there are several different configurations of the pistol. What are the differences between SKU 109004 and SKU 209304? The later says "no safeties and striker fired" while the first says nothing.

It's kind of confusing!

Cactus:

There are finish differences and overall size issues.... And the "Pro" v.s. whatever I bought....

Meantime the usual options are a mag safety or a thumb safety. Or - horrors - a Hilary Lock....

The web site should mention these options if they're present. "Should"....

You should avoid the Hilary Lock at all costs. The mag disconnect (IMHO) is harmless. Thumb safeties are good for folks who like 'em but not really necessary in this gun design.

All of the M&P's are striker fired.... "No Safeties" would mean that the mag disconnect and thumb safety aren't there. The Hilary Lock is probably shown as "child protective device" or some such.

Regards

I have fired several different sizes of Springfield XD's. I own an XD9 sub-compact. In my mind the XD is vastly superior to any centerfire S&W semi-auto ever made, and I have fired 2nd generation, 3rd generation, Sigma, M&P. More reliable, more accurate, better triggers across the board. You may not like the way one or the other feels or fits your hand but XD works great for me, so I would get XD and not look back. Just one opinion among many.

Had an XD45 Compact shot the S&W M&P 45 Compact, after attempting to adjust the sights on the XD and found it's next to impossible without a milling machine.

Sold the XD and bought the M&P45 which I shoot better and carry it in the XD High Noon holster. Also got a couple of free mags from S&W

My brother has an XD 9 I have the M&P, between the two his has jamming issues every time he takes it to the range. My M&P has had a failure to eject once, while my bro was firing it (He's a bit of a limp wrister). But I have shot both plenty and did so before I purchased mine, but couldn't find anything that came close to the way the M&P feels in my hands.
