Cheap light/laser combo for M&P
Has anyone found a light/laser combo for under $100 that will stand up to recoil over time? I am shooting a .40 cal M&P. I have considered:
UTG 2-in-1 Tactical LED for $67.49 at Amazon
XP6EX-LED COMPACT LASER AND LIGHT SYSTEM for $66 Ebay
EMAŽ Light / Laser Combo for $70 at Sportsman's Guide (I have had bad luck with SG quality)
I am afraid to buy any of these because I have heard that some of the cheap ones will fly off the rail after a while or just quit working, because of the effects of recoil etc. I am resigned to buying an Insight M6X Tactical for $279 at my local gun store because I believe that brand is field proven in tough conditions over time.
Has anyone found out differently through experience.
Any suggestions are appreciated.
I want a light for home security usage during night time hours, and a laser for dry-fire practice to get better with the trigger etc.

So this is something you will use to defend yourself?
What is the safety and security of you and your family worth?
No offense, but don't put a price on your life. Don't skimp.
I can understand saving a buck. But not on self defense products.
Remember, you get what you pay for.
Stick with products known for their performance.
Crimson Trace
Streamlight
Surefire
Insight
And a few others.....

How about a Streamlight TRL1s for $84? I have two of them now, and they are amazing. Lifetime warranty, 160 lumens, C4 LED bulb, strobe feature, top shelf light for $84. Express Police Supply... Google it. They sell at this price for anyone.

I looked into the Streamlight TRL1s and found it highly regarded. However, since I need a laser also, it won't work for me. I went to my local gun shop and found that the Insight M6X Tactical doesn't fit on my M&P40 4.25". The rail is not long enough. That light/laser is intended for rifles. They talked me into a Streamlight TRL2s for $299 + tax. I took it home and found that device to also be very highly regarded and that I could get it at OpticsPlanet.com for $245.99 with free shipping and no sales tax. Since that saves me over $75, I ordered it on the spot and took the other one back to the store.
Apparently, Insight made the Streamlight devices originally, but now Streamlight is totally separate. I am quite excited to get the light/laser and put it to use. I feel like I have obtained a quality device for protection of my home and family and probably at as good a price as possible. I appreciate the responses, as both have been helpful.

Looks like an excellent product, but I want a light/laser combo and so I went with the Streamlight TLR-2s. (160 Lumens - features a strobe function)

I have already had one on my .40 M&P Pro with 4.25" barrel and it fits nicely. I believe the rail is the same size for both barrel lengths.
Mine is due to arrive this coming Thursday. I would be happy to post pics with it attached, if that would be helpful.

Here is what it looks like. It works very well and is easy to put on and take off the gun. Streamlight is one of the better brands, so I am expecting it to last a long time.

Also does the gun still feel good in the hand with the extra weight on the front.

M&P FS vs Compact
[QUOTE=Murraybob;135935865]Here is what it looks like. It works very well and is easy to put on and take off the gun. Streamlight is one of the better brands, so I am expecting it to last a long time.
I have both a M&P full size 9mm and a compact. The compacts rail is approx. 1" and the full size appears to be 1 3/8". Do you think this Streamlight will fit both.

I don't have such a holster, but they can be obtained. The laser can be adjusted for both horizontal and vertical. It has a small hex wrench to make those adjustments. You can see the small brass screws in the first picture. You just pick a distance for where you want it to zero and adjust it accordingly.

Mine is a .40 but I would expect it to be the same for a 9mm. Maybe not. The Streamlight uses the notch furthest forward on my rail and that is over 1 1/2" from the front of the trigger guard to that notch. Sounds like it would not work for your compact, and I'm not sure about the 9mm. It seems to me that the Streamlight would require a rail notch at least 1 1/2" from the front of the trigger guard.

M&P 9 rail
I only measured the length of the rail itself on my FS and compact M&P 9mm's. From the front of the trigger guard on the FS it is 2" and on the compact 1 1/2" from the front of the trigger guard. So I guess these will fit if I read your post right.
Thanks, MM

It will clearly fit your FS, and I'll bet that it will fit the compact. If you want to be sure, you could take the compact into a local gun dealer that sells the Streamlight and try it out. However, don't buy the Streamlight from the local dealer unless he will sell it for under $245.99. Optics Planet sells them for that price with free shipping. Be sure to get the one with the strobe capability (TRL2s), since it also comes with a more powerful LED light. The model with the strobe sells for roughly the same price as the one without the strobe.
By shopping with Optics Planet I was also able to avoid $16 in sales tax.
PS On second thought, it may not work on the compact. There has to be a rail notch at least 1 1/2" from the trigger guard. If the rail ends at that distance, that won't leave room for a notch at the required distance. You would need to verify the compact to fit by trying it out. It seems to me that if your are using the compact for carry purposes, the addition of the Streamlight may add too much bulk for that plan to work well. You can get a Crimson Trace type grip based laser for that purpose.
