Default Red Dot Sights--Both Eyes Open?

OK. I admit to being a newer shooter with pistols and have never used a red dot sight before. Just got one yesterday for my M&P 5" CORE and I plan to go to the range today. I've done a little reading and all the articles say to have both eyes open when using the red dot. True??
So far I've just shot with one eye closed (right eye dominant) and using fiber optic sights.
I'm using the Burris FF 3.

I shoot with both eyes open for all open sights, including red dot.
It might take a little to get used to it, but it wont be long before it is a piece of cake. About the only thing I shoot with only my dominant eye is scoped rifles.

I'm right handed and left eye dominant and found that with the screen style sights I need to close my left eye. With a tube style I can keep both eyes open where my left eye doesn't see the dot. My left eye wants to take over and pulls me off target with the screen style. Now if your right eye anyway this may not be a problem for you.

+1 to what JPriest stated above. Closing the non-dominant eye causes the pupil in the open eye to dilate (open) slightly. This will decrease your depth of field and reduce sharpness. It requires some practice to ignore the double image, but... perhaps this is an excellent reason to go to the range more often.

I was taught to shoot with both eyes open so that's the only way I know how to shoot, but if you put the dot on the target(one eyed or both), you will hit it (assuming you zeroed the sight properly and don't flinch )

Interesting. My issue exactly.
Tried the FF3 and soon relegated it to the parts box.

Try it both ways and see what works best for you.
I'm right handed , was right eye dominant but am now blind in my right eye. So I shoot with my left eye, because I don't have much choice and do just fine with red dots and one eye .

I am right-handed, right-dominant and have used both eyes since forever, but once in a while, I have a problem with double image. When that happens, I just blink the left eye, and the double image disappears.

If you're shooting defensive pistol you should always shoot with both eyes open.

One-eye-closed shooting is for the movies...

Well, went to the range today and zeroed in the red dot. Got it working alright except the dot certainly doesn't look like a dot. Looks more like a mini sun with plasma bursts coming off in different directions. At one time it looked like a half moon. Another time it looked like an @ sign.
Definitely not a round dot no matter what the setting.

That's exactly what I saw when I tried my Eotech for the first time, I thought I had a defective unit until I put on my prescription glasses.... Then it looked like it was supposed to. Its weird my prescription is to see far not near.
