THE S&W SHIELD IS OUT
1) Striker Fired
2) 9MM or 40S&W
3) 19 ounces
4) 3.1 barrel
5) $449 S&W list price
6) .95 thick
7) 6.1 length
Sounds just like a Taurus PT709 SLIM OR PT740 SLIM
with that weight, sizes and calibers. We'll have to see
what the street price is in the future.
With back up and belly guns selling a boat load it should sell.

Can't say I'm thrilled. Guess I'll have to handle one and see how it feels. At least it doesn't look like a PPS.......

The biggest thing that I am impressed about, is that S&W has already got accessories in the works; see lasers to be available from:Crimson Trace, Laserguard, & Lasermax, 2 different fiber optics sight vendors, Big Dot sights, and several holsters from various manufacturers. Doesn't appear to be any production lag, as there are several for sale on GunBroker as I type this.

What an uninspiring name of a gun- even if it's great piece, the name turns me off.
Sheild??? Come on, can't they do better than that.

It seems to be a great larger caliber alternative to all the .380 pocket rockets currently flooding the market. There will certainly be a lot of criticism, but S&W deserves credit for constantly trying maximize its product line. I like the idea ... a lot.

This BG380 owner (and carrier) will go see one of these and hopefully, shoot one before I buy it. If I buy it, I'll be sure to put a side-by-side review of the BG380 and the Shield in the appropriate forum on this site.

It's butt ugly. The trigger appears to have broken in half, and looks as if someone did a poor job of trying to splint it back together. Looks like it is made mostly of plastic. I bet it stinks, too. Probably would make me break out if I handled it. I think I'll stick with my Model 60/36/37 for concealed carry. If I feel like I need more than five rounds, I'll carry two of them.

My little LGS has 2 on the way. Heck they even had the Ruger 1911 on the shelf today. If I had some money I would have snagged that. Nice looking and appears well made.
Back to SW plays catch up.

I saw it on another forum and I will stick with my S&W 469. A real gun, not a star wars toy.

I don't own anything polymer. That said, I believe this product serves a distinct niche market and I am interested.
I couldn't bring myself to buy another brands compact polymer; but i'm certainly brand loyal to S&W. If the early reviews are positive, i'll give it six months or so and get one.
Kind regards

I like it. If I didn't already have an M&P9c, I'd be in the market for the Shield.

Do you think that you might be able to convert the 9mm shield to 40 S&W by changing out the barrel?

No, the 9mm breech face will be too small for the .40

lol .. what you don't know. It's a great little gun that is getting gobbled up faster than you can blink. There are MANNNY positive reports on the 'net about it's ergonomics, reliability, low recoil, same quality as the M&P line, but a better stock trigger. You can shoot this all day loonng and not get sore. Like to see anyone do that with a Nano. or a LC9 even a jframe.

Comparison
When I see comments about comparing a .380 and the 9mm, I wonder why I ever waste the time to get on the internet. The "Shield" is an excellent primary carry pistol. If you are unhappy with the name, you night be missing the point

There is a rumor that the 40 can be converted to 9mm, using a factory barrel and mag. but not vise-versa.

It is not a rumor. There are a number of threads discussing this. There is also video evidence of it. Full size and compact models are the same way.

Picked mine up in the .40 flavor yesterday. I also have a 9mm barrel and mags on the way. I bought the .40 specifically because of the ability to be able to shoot 9mm as well as .40 It sure is a sweet feeling gun in my hand
As far as finding one...good luck!! I stumbled across mine by just stopping at a LGS after a doctors appointment. They posted earlier in the day (on Facebook)that they had some but I thought for sure they'd be sold out by the time I went in there. They had a couple left which I promptly decreased by 1

GOOD LUCK, finding a shield period.
just went to my LGS and was told that the waiting period may be up to 1 year! DO you have any 9mm ammo? NO!
JUST went to a gunshow and saw ZERO shields.
LOTS of ammo there, all RELOADS!

That could be true if you rely soley on one place. But I've seen them available online at various times. You just have to be vigilant and catch it quickly when they are available. Fortunately for me, I bought one back in May for my wife. Someone in the Portland area had bought it for pocket carry and decided it was too big for that so they sold it to me for only $400. I jumped on it immediately and my wife has been happy with it ever since (and she actually likes to go shoot it).

Thread revival!
And I find the early posts in this very funny. "yawn" and "i bet it stinks" are by far the best.

I need to read the post date. When I read the first post informing us the Shield is out followed by dimensions I was about to ask if they had been on Gilligan Island for the last 10 months.

YIKES ! $41.80 ? I got my 8 rounders for $32. at my LGS about a month ago. They (LGS) is only selling them to customers that bought Shields from them. Nice being a regular. I've had my Shield 9 since last April when they first came out. Dealer got two at that time. I almost bought them both, but I'm happy just having one of the first. Great handgun and ZERO problems. It eats everything.

I found them at Midway USA & Brownells.
You may want to try Greg Cote
Greg Cote, LLC
I ordered some 1911 mags from him and they were cheaper than my "Dealer Discount" from Midway and Brownells.
