$367 + tax + background check. Total was $422.
Got it through the Gun Genie and the original dealer I ordered it through tried to add an addition background check fee on top of my invoice price which said it was included. I walked and had the Gun Genie people take care of it. They sent it to another dealer and I got it for the same price. Sadly that price undercut the new dealer and he was forced to eat the loss. He said he made $19 on the deal because he was essentially eating the shipping cost and the tax on the shipping cost which the original dealer didn't factor in.

I think that is the way our goverment thinks as well! I will have to disagree with you on this one ponchsox! Just because someone will pay it doesn't make it ok. This situation isn't illegal because we don't HAVE to buy it. I am all for everybody making their buck, but if they charge more then their usual mark up just because, they are taking advantage of me. My LGS had it for MSRP as well. I asked the guy if they had any other guns for sale at MSRP & he said no. I fondled it and left!

This is a tough call. A gun shop gets only so many... and the demand is high! I think if it were my shop, I'd sell all but one, and let customers see and handle the last one. That way I could still give a great deal which my customers expect, and I could keep a sample for them to hold and hopefully order.
Gun shops don't make much on new guns. That extra $20 or $40 they overcharge for the 3 Shields they got from Smith is not going to make their day. So why overcharge?
I'd rather sell at my normal markup, make a few customers VERY happy they could get a Shield at a fab price, then those customers show their buddies and they tell them where they bought it at a great price and say "Yes he has one down there to look at and check out right now!".
That satisfaction and customer service will be worth a lot more than the extra $80 or so you could have gouged out of a few customers that really want a Shield....
I like the saying: "You can shear a sheep every year, but you can only slaughter it once."

$418 total through Gun Genie. I had called my LGS to get one for me, and when they couldn't, they called me back and said to go ahead with the Gun Genie order. I think it's always polite to give them first crack.

My LGS sells everything at MSRP, so the Shield is no different. I just think this is funny, because I stopped at a Gander Mountain today, just to see if they had the Shield in yet, and the guy said, "No, but would you like to hold one?" They had sold two this morning within a half hour of opening, but are keeping one for just that purpose. Once I held it, I had to have it and by this afternoon, my LGS called and said mine was in, but as I said, it's MSRP, as they sell everything else.
(Oh, and buying on line isn't a good option for me, once shipping, tax, background check and transfer fees are figured in; it would come out a wash anyway....)

When I was finally able to find (stumble across) one locally I fully expected to pay MSRP. I think a got a pretty nice unexpected discount on mine, but can honestly say that had I been quoted the MSRP I still would've purchased it simply because I wanted it. I'm too old and impatient when it comes to things like this. I want it now!

As a public service, to this point those reporting a "plus tax" price show average price of $407.77. Those who've reported what they paid "out the door" averaged $418.21.
My LGS is holding one for me I will be paying $430 OTD tomorrow.
I'm ok with that. At the average $408 plus tax and PICS fees I'd be at around $443. I'm sure the price will drop a little on these as the shine wears off but I wouldn't guess by a whole lot. And I'd rather spend a few more bucks and have mine right away. (Will most likely head right from the shop to the range!)

I've thought about this. Say $399 is an excellent price and $449 is the MSRP. Is $50 really that much of a difference is you could have it today and you could buy the example you're holding in your hand? Maybe...
No, not at all if you really wanted one.
Still, I see them at sub $400 all day when the initial demand goes down. But you'll have to wait 6 months+ for that to happen.

I guess I totally don't understand this logic or conclusion. It is capitalism at its purest and most unmolested. It's an independent seller asking what the market will carry. Good for the guy, good for the market (inspires competition), less good for the consumer. I don't consider an M&P Shield an essential item that a businessperson should be either honor- or legally- bound to sell at some low price because I want it.
I want a Shield. I will highly likely buy a Shield. The price I pay is going to be heavily influenced by my impetuousness, supply, and availability. If guy X is selling it for MSRP and guy Y is selling it for MSRP-$50, I'll go with guy Y. Guy X will respond or wait until guy Y sells out.
I guess in summation: I don't like it when I have to pay more for stuff... but to equate selling a pistol (again, not an essential, unique, morally necessary thing) for what the market will bear with taking advantage of me strikes me as a bit hyperbolic at best and patently confused about a free market economy at worst.
I hope both you and I find Shields at deals that are good for us For me, I suspect I'll cave and buy at MSRP (or above with FFL and shipping) because, dammit, I want one now!

Well mrbort, my "logic and conclusion" is just that I don't agree with someone making more profit on an item just because it is popular right now and people will pay it. I stated that I am all for everybody making their fair share. I also said since a weapon is not an item we MUST purchase that the mark up was infact legal, just not good business "in my opinion". I believe we are still allowed to form and state our opinions. I also just stated that I would have to disagree with the opinion ponchsox shared with us. HOWEVER, I did not refer to him as a "confused hyperbolic capitalist" for stating his opinion. BUT, that is what is nice about this country, we are all FREE to have our own opinion. You are free to have your opinion of me as well. I guess some just show a bit more couth when it comes to another mans opinion. They are your rights though, so use them as you see fit! I will continue to do so as well! Have a great day and God bless!

JJ,
I apologize for my mischaracterization of your post and by extension you and your opinions. It was not a fair point and I regret making it. Thank you for reminding me to have more tolerance, give more benefit of the doubt, and most of all respect others and their opinions more. Again, my apologies. Best of luck to you.
Regards,
mrbort

$341. I did trade in some Chinese United Cutlery knives I had lying around for a $60 deposit, though.
Purchasing price was $375+7.0% tax. Equates to $401.25 out the door.

I went looking for a .45 M&P and seen this little M&P sitting with a tag that said M&P 9mm 3-1/8" barrel. My response can I see that shield.
They got 4 in on tues. and I bought the last one today, $422.something out the door. Really didn't expect to see one at my LGS this soon.

An armed citizenry is a polite citizenry.
Sorry, I had to, it just fit so well with your discussion.

Talk about price gouging Let me guess. He probably complains about too high prices when HE goes shopping.

I went in to one of my LGS's (a statewide chain with an indoor range) for the maiden range visit with mine and to compare it to my 9C. They received one sometime during the week. They had a $499 price tag on it. I have a pretty good relationship with one of their managers. He asked what I paid for mine and when I told him, his jaw dropped and eyes popped .

Yea that is just highway robbery. I wonder how many people took the bait and bought the gun at that price.

I've certainly debated taking that bait. There aren't a lot of gun shops around here (nearest one is 1 hr away, nearest set of more than one is 2 hours away) so the drive time + tax + hassle makes it almost financially enticing. I'm not a patient person so waiting for the price to come down is hard.

After my first Shield purchase, my wife decided she liked it better than her 9C. Went to the gun show today. There were three of them there, priced from $425 to $499 plus tax and background check. Another dealer quoted me $430 OTD, but he had them on order and was "expecting" them sometime next week. I ended up making a deal and left the show with my second Shield purchase of the week, $435 OTD. Cost me an extra $5 to walk away with it rather than order and wait for it. Not as good a deal as my first one, but good enough for me. Now I don't have to share with the wife.

I went to the local Shoot Straight... They had one that was sold pending for the owner to come by, but they let me see it and hold it... Price? 499.00 +tax !!!! I told them that it was 50.00 over msrp, "yeah, but that is what we are selling them for..."
They also offered me a Walther PPS for 549.00.
Both were very nice guns...the Shield looked like it took a lot of cues in design from the Walther. Grip on the Shield felt better for me... But that is as far as I could examine or compared them after the price shock... I thank them and walked out...
Gander Mountain had 40 and sold the last one on Tuesday... I had called on Monday and was told they did not have them... The sales guy saw my frustration (I have purchased a few guns there..)...took my name and phone number, and told me he would put one aside when they get the next order this coming Tuesday or Thursday... They have them at msrp...
Maybe I should just wait for the next gun show. I would hate to pay 50.00 more than the going price... Problem is that I suffer from the same patience issues some of you have lol

I couldn't find one locally so I bought off Gunbroker for $410.00 + 25.00 + S&H + 28.00 transfer fee = $463 total. Locally they were selling at MSRP + tax = $471 total so I saved a few bucks.

We can't get them in MASS yet, and I've been told by S&W that it will be June before we see them (maybe later) and that we will get the Sucky MASS 10 Lb Trigger.
So anyone buying one in MASS figure in the Trigger Job Price also...............
