I too am hapy beyond all of my initial expectations. Here is a report I put on another board.
I am not usually an impulse kind of a shopper, but as soon as I felt the new S&W Shield in my hand, I knew I had to get one. I have been looking for a subcompact to carry when I 'can't carry a real gun'. My EDC is a Glock 20 SF, so you can see both why I need a small gun and why I was reluctant to step down.
Over the past several months, I have looked at all the small 9mm's, but none came home with me. The Kahr CM9 is the closest thing to the Shield, but the Shield looks to be better made and more comfortable to me. It feels great in the hand.
I bought a Shield in 9mm followed me home yesterday and I got a chance to run about 100 or so rounds through it today. A friend of mine also bought one and ran another 100+ rounds through his today as well.
Neither of us had any malfunctions, and the gun was every bit a comfortable to shoot as a full sized Glock 17 or M&P 9. I shot the following ammo:
CCI Blazer 115gr FMJ
CCI 125gr GDHP
WW 147gr JHP 'USA'
WW 147gr Ranger T
UMC 115gr FMJ
Cor Bon 125gr +P JHP.
All brands of ammo ran fine and hit to roughly the same POI, and even the +P was pleasant to shoot. To me, S&W really nailed this one. It vanishes under a T-shirt and is a 7+1 or 8+1 gun in 9mm (minus one for 40). It is a tight fit in my blue jean pockets, but it is possible. It fits in the pockets of cargo shorts no problem. S&W fixed the spongy break and reset of the M&P trigger to make it more ‘Glock like’, which is a good thing.
For the time being, I will carry it with Ranger T's, although I would love to try some Hornady Critical Duty +P in it. Although it is a step down in capability form a 15+1 10mm, I believe is a big step up in capability from a tiny .380 like the LCP. There is nothing wrong with 7+1 or 8+1 in a 9mm with a good bullet. I say you can buy with confidence.
