I'm very new to handguns, and I just bought a 4.25" M&P 9mm (my 1st handgun), and was told that I couldn't change the front sight out with a fiber optic sight. Is this true? I don't want to try and mess up the gun, but that didn't seem right to me. Why else would S&W sell the sights on their website. Thanks.

There are a lot of sights available for the M&P. I'm using Ameriglo i-dot pro's on mine. The front sight comes in lime green or orange and has a tritium insert in the middle. The rear sight is tritium as well.

If you're wanting FO sights, TruGlo and Hiviz both make them for the M&P.

I put the XS sights on mine. Took a little getting used to it because it is a different concept than regular sights.

I would strongly suggest finding a local gunsmith to install your new sights. They are wedged into a dove tail slot and only go in and out in one direction. The rear sight covers the cap for the little spring that works the Firing Pin Block in the slide and it is easily lost if you are not careful. One way to remove them is with a small brass punch and a small hammer...the better way that most gunsmiths use is with a sight pusher, which is an expensive tool. Spending a few bucks getting it done right will save you some grief and a marked up slide.

Not usually, I just changed out my M&P standard sight with a set of Hi Viz sights.

Yes, they are very snug in the dovetail...if you don't have the proper equipment take it to a gunsmith that has a sight pusher if possible. They will also make sure that the new front sight is in the same spot as the original was.

My LGS where I got my shield put TFO's on in 10 minutes.

IMO TFOs are the best sights you can put on any pistol.

There may have been some front dovetail size variation on some of the earlier M&Ps. The 10-8 Performance website states this in regard to their offerings. I put a set on my 45. Had to have a gunsmith do it cause they factory sights were in so tight. Once in, they've stayed put.

do you guys use a sight pusher or hammer and punch? i plan on using the hammer and punch route since it's the cheapest option out there. i can justify buying a sight tool that is more expensive than the sight.

I would not use a hammer and punch on any nightsight for frae of breaking the capsule the the sight wont work and they wont replace it eather.. most gun smiths charge under $25.00 to do it .

I'm planning on getting fiber optic, should be no problems breaking any capsules, right?

If i did not have a sight pusher( which i do) I would have them done by a gunsmith.

I installed TFO on my 9FS with a hammer and punch. Some minor file work and 15 minutes of my time. Now just gotta take it to the range to sight in and make minor adjustments

I recently sent my slide to Trijicon to have night sights installed. A friend of mine tried this on his pistol and damaged the front sight and the slide-sucks to be him.

If you are careful and skilled, you should be able to get it done. Some front sights are notoriously difficult to remove (Springfield XD's) and some brands that are usually easy can sometimes be a bear. The sight type to be installed makes a difference also- it sounds like some are easier to damage than others. I am speaking from what I have read on the topic, not from experience. Good luck

Installed it with no prob. Sights are pretty during the day and really bright at night. I guess i did not break the tritium tubes
