Default Sight push tool for Shield?

I'm wondering if anyone knows first hand whether the sight push tool MGW makes, or any other manufacturer for that matter, works for the M&P Shield?

Since the slide is only .95" I'm thinking it won't. My LGS charges $50 to change sights, and I have two sets to change. For $100 I'd rather buy the tool and have it if I need to tweek the sight adjustment.

I removed the rear sight on my 40c when I put the Apex kit in and it was not difficult at all. That kit comes with a small plastic wedge but I'm sure you could make one by hand or just use a well padded dowel or something to knock it out, once the allen screw is out it comes out pretty easy.

The Shield's sights are FRONT (ADJUSTABLE) and REAR (REMOVABLE) for sight replacement and NOT ADJUSTABLE. Just loosen the set screw, it may require some heat as the set screw has Locktite on it.

The rear on my Shield would not budge even after heating with a hair dryer on high, and of course backing out the set screw, and tapping fairly hard with an aluminum punch, taped. More heat, maybe?? I've got an Apex USB to install! The current MGW S&W tool for M&P definitely won't fit the Shield, I had one in hand to verify. I haven't found one yet that the Shield will fit on.

OK Working on Personal watercraft learn the hard way years ago the importance of heating up so soften thread lockers. In this case you can buy a Micro Butane torch. You should be able to find one at a marine center or maybe a lowes. Google it up. they should be less than $10.00.

My Dawson Precision sight came with an aluminum punch. which looked more like a screw driver 1/4 inch wide and a short square shaft and no handle. put masking tape on the punch 2-3 pieces and use it after heating up the sight. Make sure that you use a vise to hold your slide. Again protect it with masking tape and use aluminum pieces along the jaws, so you dont leave teeth marks in youe slide.

You have thread locker not only on the rear sight screw but also under each of the sights. use a sharp blade and clean up the residue on the angle corners of the slide where the dove tail fits.

I saw a picture of another gun earlier with a long front sight. I would like a short front sight and a rear sight at the edge of the slide to increase my sight radius

Look for his video. Dawson Precision

I recently installed XS Big Dot sights on my Shield. Be aware that under the rear sight there is a small spring and cover plate that is held in place by the sight.

My LGS has a universal sight pusher that worked great on adjusting my front sight. The next time I visit his shop which will be later this afternoon I'll get the brand name of his tool.

Dont see the need for any tools, tap it in, the aluminum leaves like scratches looking on the steel sight, it brushed off easily with brassbrush, used a sharpee marker to die the metal, clean well afterwards, looks like nothing ever happen. Make sure that you tape your aluminum punch or a brass punch

Just returned from my LGS, here's his tool which easily works with the Shield and just about any other pistol.

This is a quality tool and I believe Brownells stocks them.

The MGW tool made for the M&P will not work on the shield. The Shield is too norrow to fit the tool.

The MGW tool for the M&P WILL in fact work for the Shield. I put new Trijicons on my Shield 9 today. Just don't try to use the bolt down piece that normally fits into the rails on the M&P(s). Take that part off the tool. Here is how to do the rear sight - Float the slide in the tool and position it carefully. Use the stainess rectangular cut out piece under the slide to raise it up. Position the slide so it contacts the moving part of the sight pusher. It will be held in place by pressure against the frame of the sight pusher opposite the moving part. The front sight is just a little trickier. You can use the same technique, but you can't get it completely off or on. You'll only get the front halfway off/ on with the MGW tool. Not a big deal. Then, just pad the slide with something like a thick towel and clamp it in a vise, then take a small flat tip screw driver with some masking tape on the tip and give it a couple of taps. I also lubed the sight's before and after removal with CLP. DON'T FORGET WHEN REMOVING THE REAR SIGHT NOT TO TAKE IT ALL THE WAY OFF WITHOUT COVERING / PREPARING TO CATCH THE STRIKER BLOCK SPRING AND DISC. Don't let that sucker fly into orbit!!! Take your time and be patient. Good luck!

I just used my MGW318 sight tool to remove my Shield sights and used it to install a set of Trijicon night sights #SA37.
You have to take out the part that clamps the slide to the tool and just let the slide press up against the tool. It worked flawlessly for me and did not scratch or dent the slide at all.

They come off left to right as you look from the rear to the front.

Hi guys-

I'm new to this forum but the topic matter caught my eye because I struggled with the same issue of trying to push the front sight a while back. If you haven't solved the problem yet, short of taking a hammer to your firearm (which I cannot bear to do), there is a sight push solution and it turns out it was right in front of us... The MGW 318 for the full size M&P's works wonderfully for the Shield. You just have to take out the clamp that holds the slide to make it work for the Shield front sight. There won't be a way to clamp the slide down but don't worry about that. Once you get the slide into the tool and tighten up the push mechanism, that pressure holds the slide perfectly in place. I've done 3 Shields now that way for myself and friends and nary a blemish on any of the 3 weapons... hope this helps someone...

You might want to check out this thread: Shield sight change Picture heavy
The tool is available in the classifieds, and even on sale at the moment. I know, shameless self promotion.
