Good Evening,

First time poster here and confirmed Smith Junkie (all wheel guns until today). I was in my local store yesterday (it just happens to be right on the way home) and they were just putting out a Shield 9 that had come in. I’d heard all the hype about this new Miracle 9 and decided to see for myself if this could really be all that and a bag of potato chips. Put down a deposit and went in today to finish paying ($419 plus tax much less than what I paid for my Solo) and do the paperwork. 30 minutes later I was next door on the range to try this puppy out.
Was the Shield really all that great? Could it be better than my Kimber Solo? Hmmm. Open the box (cardboard box, no hard plastic, no different from the Solo there). Two magazines! Are you listening Kimber and Sig? One 7 round and one extended 8 round. Excellent! The Shield is a pleasure to hold. Just enough grip for me (even with the 7 round magazine) to get a firm purchase. Even better with the extended magazine. I shot a variety of ammo. Remington, Blazer and American Eagle in 115 and 124 grain. FMJ and Hollow Point at 5, 7 and 10 yards. I was thrilled to experience ZERO FTFs or FTEs. A significant improvement from my Solo that couldn’t put more that 3 or 4 rounds down range without an FTE, FTF or the magazine falling out. Then I realized that my index finger didn’t hurt! The trigger on the Shield is longer and isn’t filed to a sharp tip that digs into your finger with each round.
I found the trigger on the Shield quite good. Very similar to my Glocks with a great reset. The Shield was dead on , I was able to easily place all the rounds within 4-6 inches of each other in the center of mass rapid fire and 2-3 inch groups slow fire. Two hundred rounds of spent brass later and not an single issue to report. BTW, for those looking for a holster for their Shield, it DOES fit very nicely in my Crossbreed Super Tuck for my Glock 26 AND my Glock 30 SF. Great retention. I wore it doing yard work, running errands and taking a much deserved nap. Comfortable, no shifting, no slopping around. Don’t ask me how one holster fits three totally different weapons, it just does (like gravity and taxes).

One thing is for sure. The M&P Shield 9 is no Kimber Solo. No way no how. To each his own. If you have a Solo and it's worked for you, I'm happy for you. My experience was much different.

Now, if I can just keep the wife from thinking the Shield is hers. Thanks for the space fellow Smith Fans.

P.S. After 3 trips back to Kimber late last year , I was offered a full refund for my Solo. I took the money and ran. I knew if I waited long enough someone would manufacture a small 9 that wasn’t a compromise. Kudos to the design team at S&W for hitting a real homerun. I can almost forgive you for that dang Hillary Hole. :D

You need to buy her one.

I put 20% to get on a list. The next day I found one in stock.
The first one will be for the wife. I should be able to pick it up this week sometime.

I will get the second one when it comes in someday. I am in no hurry since I love my compact 9mm.

I had no plans on buying one for myself. But, I am excited to get it.

Cowboyjoe:

I enjoyed your sincere to the point post.

Kimber should be arrested for selling the Solo for $600 and change when the Shield is 10 times the gun for $200 less.

I have shot a Solo, owned a Kahr CM9 and Beretta Nano and my Shield is the gold standard for a ccw.

Game over, Shield is Gun of the year!

Without a doubt the Shield rocks! :D

Oh and nice to see a resident of that cool isolated community in the SW corner of the state on the forum!! I lived in Yuma for 5 years before escaping in 1999. ;) Got to make the wonderous trek out to YPG every day. Don't miss that drive much (though I miss seeing the herd of wild horses out by the artillery displays).

I really thought Kimber hit the homerun with the Solo when they brought it out - plus, every Gun magazine on the planet reviewed it and praised it to high heaven. I know owners who both sing its praises and are very disappointed with it. Seems to be a hit and miss gun.

The Shield, on the other hand, is only a hit. I haven't heard of a single lemon yet, and with the number of Shields sold, should have heard of a few by now. I'm at about 750 trouble free rounds, and it will be my EDC when CHP is issued (most likely) in about a month.

Enjoy the voyage!

Since we're not supposed to post links to other forums, I'll simply write that on another Brand's forum, someone who supposedly works for Bass Pro, while touting a new Subcompact .45 that just came out this week, mentioned that they have already had 5 Shields returned for service and proclaiming the Shield a *** (his phrasing, not mine).

I kinda take it with a grain of salt, since he's the ONLY person who's made mention of returns and did not choose to mention what the supposed problems that required a return were.

Be that as it may, I know several Nano owners who've mentioned it having FTX problems, due to it being a picky eater. Once they found a common ammo that all their pistols liked... No problems (same as my little PF-9).

So far, my Shield's been 100% and has worked its way into my Daily carry front pocket... But I still can't talk my Wife away from her G-26. :)

Another forum with a member who bought a newly released pistol, who works for a place that sells guns and obviously wants to sell that newly released model by talking down the competition? You don't say?

Saw that over there as well...He said he had 4 out of 5 shields returned.. have about 1K flawless rounds thru my 9mm shield so far...The gun he was praising is interesting, but,IMO, I can't see the prices they're getting...

The Shield has definitely been a solid performer...and while it (nor any other machine) can't be expected to be 100%, it certainly has shown to be a very reliable first iteration gun. Of course, it really isn't a new gun, it is based on the tested M&P platform.

I do not care for Kimbers, based on prior ownership (three times), but when the Solo was announced, I reserved one...then when they came in, I decided to pass, because by then the negative reports had already started. I did buy an LC9, and while it was OK, it just wasn't the exact pistol I wanted. When the Shield came out, though, I found the ideal (for me, anyway) carry pistol. I bought a second one for my wife.

Even if there ever is a problem, S&W will make it right...but so far, seems to be a solid gun.

Yup... Hense the 'I kinda take it with a grain of salt...' statement.

And yup... it was actually 4 out of the 5 they had sold. Thanks for the correction okc-zee. :)

I kinda wonder if they brought them back because the gun shot low & left... an obvious defect. :D

You really can't expect a gun magazine to badmouth a gun when they pay for full page ads every month. Besides, I wonder if the gun companies supply "ringers" to the magazines for testing. A ringer would be a gun that has been worked over at the factory by their pro shop to perform way better than an off the shelf gun. Remember, Consumer Reports buys the products they test from regular stores, w/o stating who they are. They do not get them from the company, as they don't want to test "ringers". GARY N4KVE

Interesting comments. I own a Kimber 3" Ultra CDP II that Has run flawlessly since purchase five years ago. I have no knock on Kimber. 99% of the Kimbers I see are perfect. The Solo not so much. I work as a range officer and my first customer just got his Solo back from Kimber for the second time. Mostly feeding problems. He brought three brands of ammo and still suffered a lot of issues. Handed the gun to one of my co-workers and he also had feeding problems with all three brands of ammo. My customer is selling his Solo. One hour later my buddy came in with my back ordered Shield 9mm. I opened the box, ran a boresnake down the tube, filled the mags with handloads and fired away. Fifty handloads and a mag full of various range pickups and everything worked perfectly. Gun shot nice little groups right at POA at 10 yds. Home to the workbench for a complete cleaning. Next week I will run a large variety of handloads and break it in properly. So far so good.

I really wanted a Solo when they were announced, but that $600 dollar plus price tag was hard to swallow. As time went along the problems started surfacing, and I cooled on the idea. The Shield comes out and has a lot of good praise, and I buy one for $200 less, Fantastic. "Gun of the Year" yes, it should be.

How much wider is the 9mm compact with more capacity? I know the solo is very narrow and great for carry, having considered the 9mm compact for quite awhile I'm needing to make a decision. Are we talking 1/4 inch wider (I think)...

Depends on how you are going to carry it. Width is one thing, grip width is another. Loaded weight is the third big factor. The Shield has a new trigger that may be a improvement. Here is a great comparison video.

When Kimber moved from Oregon their products turned to junk IMHO.

Glad to hear your Shield runs. I'm still packing a Glock 26 as my smallest center fire but would love a smaller 9mm for that role. The Shield is still a little too heavy to pry open my wallet. I'm sure it's easier to pack than my G26 but it gets expensive to switch horses mid-stream and I have other 9mm Glocks.

I've handled the Shield and was impressed.

Nice call on the Shield. I recently purchased a 9mm and only have 150 rounds through it but it has performed flawlessly and is a real pleasure to shoot. I will have my CWP soon and the Shield will be my EDC.

I had a Kimber Solo, but had a completely different experience. Much to my delight, it ran flawlessly. It really was a nice pistol. Fit, finish, and very svelte. The touble I had was while it was a real looker, it was just a little too small to handle well.

What i mean is, while I didn't do badly shooting it, it was just so small for trying to get it from deep concealment (CrossBreed Supertuck) to a position to shoot it. I was just never smooth at it.

My Shield (I have the .40) is not much larger, but just enough to make it more... handy. Perhaps if I had less Shrek-like hands, I would have kept the Solo. I don't and I didn't. The Shield is one I plan on holding onto and using as my EDC.
