Default mag disconnect

i live in mass. and recently bought a mp9 without the dreaded mag disconnect. i also have a mp40c bought 4 years ago and it is not capable of firing without the mag....not sure what laws changed in the past 4 years but after having the mp9 without the mag disconnect it left me wanting the same for the 40c. i contacted sw about sending my 40c to them for removal of the mag disconnect and the customer rep. said sorry ...if you want a 40c without the mag disconnect i would have to buy a new gun altogether....thats ridiculous....im not made of money and i thought sw would help me out and remove the mag disconnect....they're selling 'em without it now. i didnt think they would say nope... gotta buy a whole new gun. anyway i did the mag disconnect myself via you tube video..took 20 min. and now i have a gun that will fire without a mag inserted!! thanx for nuthin s&w...did it myself and saved $$$ instead of buying a ''new'' mp

I don't really blame them - why should they do that work for you for free? The pistol is 100% functional and within sales spec. Would you send them the gun and a new set of sights and expect them to install the sights free? Add to that the possibility of them being linked to you in the event of an AD . . . afterall, they would have collaborated with you to defeat a safety feature.

Grats on removing the safety by yourself.

I like the mag disconnect

My 9c has it (never took the time to remove it) and the slide does not have that God awful disclaimer. My 45c has the disclaimer. What was S&W thinking?

I have both types but on older all steel semi autos. Prefer the one without the safety but if it has it, doesnt really bother me.

TwoBoxer is right. They sold you a perfectly functional gun. Anything you decide to add or remove should not be their problem. Ask Browning if theyll remove the same safety on their HiPower for you. They wont do it just because you dont like it. And to them its a possible lawsuit if something happened.

I wouldn't expect any company to remove a safety feature on a firearm. I know a few gunsmith's that refuse to do the same. I can't stand mag disconnects on firearms either and since you did it yourself, no big deal right?

I bought an SD9VE CA specifically for the safety features, even though I now have moved back to Oklahoma. It's against the law in Mass to remove such safety features but no one is going to drive up to your house and take it away. On the other hand, S&W would lose their approval to sell guns in Mass if they removed that safety and the lawmen found out about it.

In my case the gun will spend most of it's life in a drawer and having the mag safety and the tactile round-in-chamber indicator will help me remember the status of the gun if I have to grab it in the dark. Don't plan to keep it in the drawer if any bad acts come into our neighborhood but until it happens it will be in the drawer. I may not see it for months at a time and might not remember what condition I last left it in. I sometimes get up in the morning and notice that a computer was turned off the night before but the printer was left on. I don't think I will remember what I did to the gun 6 months previously.

I did carry a sidearm on the ship when I was in the Navy, but it was a 1911 with superb safety features. Not so, in my opinion, for the polymer family.

Look at it this way. If they modified the gun to fire w/o the mag safety, then they'd legally have to engrave the billboard on the slide, as that's how those guns are sold. That would cost more than the modification. GARY

I look for guns with disconnects. Most of my guns have them. Love them.

I think what Gary said 2 messages up might be closest to the truth. There must be some reason they put the warning on the side, and if they took out the safety, they'd have to figure out how to put it on a gun that didn't come with it.
Make sense?

A mag safety is OK, except for a SD gun. What would happen if your mag slightly drops and you are unaware it partially dropped?, If you needed the gun for a SD situation and you pull the gun out, point and pull the trigger, the gun would not fire as the mag disconnect would not allow the gun to fire, since the magazine was not fully inserted. Now you know what could happen, but you think "how likely is the magazine going to drop?" The answer is if it is a possibility, then it is an issue for a SD gun.

Without the mag safety, if the magazine drops, you can at least fire one shot, the chambered round, before the gun would fail to fire the second shot. So you choose what is better. A SD gun that will always fire at least one shot, or one that could fail to fire the first shot.

It does happen and I am retired LEO, and it happened to me several times (Glock 17), however I found this out in non-firing occurrences. Most other officers experienced the mag drops, due to swivel holster movement while in a vehicle. We learned to check our pistols every time we exited our vehicles, to make sure the mag was fully inserted. They eventually switched to stronger mag catch springs, which helped some, but was not the cure all. It was the swivel holsters that put the mag catch in a position that it could get depressed. The Glocks did not have mag safeties.

The M&P pistol mag safety is easy to remove. Any SD gun that has a mag safety could be cause for concern. The likelihood of any civilian having to use a gun for a SD situation is very slim, but it could happen. That is also true for a mag drop, but it could happen, and you wouldn't want it to happen at the wrong time.

Bob

My 9fs came with one, I removed it and used spring from a pen cut to fit to hold the sear disconnect in place. It took 10 min. to do. If have to send it back for warranty work put it back in.
