Shield reassembly question
Hi All,
I recently came across a new Shield 9 at a good price. I've only had one range session with it so far but that was very positive. I've had a bit of a problem with the field stripping though. Disassembly goes well but reassembly can be a real pain. When I go to reinstall the slide, I can't hardly pull the slide back far enough to engage the slide stop. I think I may have discovered the problem but wanted to check here before calling S&W. The bottom of my barrel has no semi circular notch to catch the end of the recoil spring assembly. Mine just has a slope and no notch. I'm thinking that it's not always arresting in the right position and therefore can be hard to reassemble. Admittedly, I'm not the most gifted mechanically speaking but I have no similar problems with my M&P9FS and it does have the arresting notch. Did mine miss this bit of machining or am I totally missing something? Many thanks, david

There is not a notch on the barrel for the guide rod. The slide on my Shield 40 has been difficult a few times while re-assembling. Make sure the take down lever stays pointed down. If the slide doesn't go on the first time, I take it off, check take down lever and try again.

Correct, no notch on the Shield barrel. As mentioned, be sure the take down lever stays pointed down when reassembling.

I just remove the mag.
Lock the slide back checking the chamber confirming it is empty.
Move the takedown lever downward.
Pull the trigger and take the slide off.
I have not touched the yellow lever since I got the gun.
Re-assembly is just the reverse as long as you do not put a mag in the empty frame that causes the yellow lever from going up.
The slide in the Shield does take work to lock back manually. It is no where as easy as with a full size gun.

If the recoil spring assembly is slightly off center against the stop on the barrel, you'll have the problem. Remove the slide and realign the spring and try it again.
