Default Factory Trigger Break and Return Disappointment

I purchased an M&P9 (LE version) sometime back (2012).

I shot it and it seemed ok.

I recently pieced together a G17 with a G22 lower and a older Gen 2 upper. it shoots very well for an ugly piece.

I have been shooting Glock since 1993 and somewhat used to their trigger.

While I dont consider myself a Glock fan, I do consider them a useful tool and they have their place in my possession.

I own a G17/34 switch top. The dept issued me a G21SF.

Since I teach cadets basic firearms, and the academy possess Glocks, I purchased the M&P9 to allow cadets to get a feel of another popular police carry.

Yesterday, I got a cadet review of both the Glock 9mm and M&P 9mm.

Ergonomics went to M&P
Trigger control went to Glock- and many of them complained about the trigger reset on the MP....that it could not be felt.

Since I am teaching basics, trigger control is shoved hard in their direction.

Only 2 out of 16 pick the M&P trigger as preferred.

One of the cadets had a XDm 9mil and many preferred that trigger over both the Glock and M&P but I told them while XDm is a very nice piece, it cannot compare to the value from a LE priced Glock ($400) or SWM&P ($400).

I was originally of the opinion that I would not spend additional money to get the M&P trigger to break cleaner and have a more positive reset.

However after shooting both, side by side and with my large paws, I too cannot get a good feel for trigger return on the M&P. I can actually shoot the G17 much faster than the M&P9 and it has alot to do with trigger return feel or lack of. In the hand, I much prefer the feel of the M&P.

So, for Christmas I have decided to add to my list to Santa to include the proper APEX trigger controls for the following requirements....

*My M&P trigger break feels mushy. Want a crisper break (not necessarily lighter) this is for carry, not competition.
*Trigger return needs to have a more positive click and/or feel.

I also want to add that this may be an unfair comparison due to my time behind a Glock trigger which is on and off for the past 19 yrs with hardly any time behind the M&P trigger. While most of my carry right now is 1911, I want to improve trigger function on my M&P.

For those who have done it.......

What APEX components do I need to add to my list to meet my MP trigger requirements?

This will not be a competition piece and would like it set up as for duty or CCW use.

if this has been discussed already, I apologize and if you could provide the link to the discussion...would be much appreciated. I dont get much time to scroll the search function these days.

thanks in advance

Rabbit's review below is from the Apex web site...

I can tell you that on my 45c I put in a competion trigger return spring and shaped my striker block to resemble the Apex USB. It's better than it was in terms of sight upset, trigger pull, crispness and reset, but not by a whole lot.

Good luck.

"It was great, until I thought about my purpose"

Experiencing that the stock trigger is just borderline unacceptable for a carry gun, I bought the DCAEK kit on the mass amount of suggestions without question. I installed it and was very pleased with how smooth the trigger became and how 'tuned' everything felt in general. the largest benefit for me was the fixing of the gritty uptake.

As time went on, I realized that the DCAEK didn't really create what I wanted out of a 'carry' gun. The break felt too light to me, which emphasized the 'squish' inherent in striker guns, and the break felt too far back. I started to become envious of the black and white trigger of my friend's Glock.

I felt like Smith and Wesson might have known what they were doing and simply made a few mistakes in the was they decided to mass produce their trigger parts. On a whim, I removed just the APEX hard sear, but left in the smoothed out USB and the heavier DCAEK spring kit. What I got was EXACTLY what I personally had been looking for. The break now felt to me to be in a more appropriate position, it was heavier and then broke much more sharply, and the reset seemed louder.

All in all with 2/3rds of the DCAEK, the trigger matched more closely that of a stock Glock trigger and more importantly it felt like the trigger Smith and Wesson intended for a military and police model handgun. The heavier springs may be negotiable, but I really feel like the M&P trigger only really required the USB and a RAM (I have a thumb safety model and am anxiously awaiting the curve RAM) for a duty/carry trigger. Unfortunately I am now sitting with a $40.00 little piece of metal for this learning experience, but I thought I would share this with anyone who was looking for something a little more 'stock' out of their trigger.

I'd like to point out that this is all my opinion and I mean no disrespect to the efforts of the people at Apex tactical, who have been central to the aftermarket M&P community. The Hard Sear was simply not what I felt was appropriate for the trigger type I was looking for.

I was just about to post the same thing based on your conditions: Apex USB and RAM.

One point about the RAM though....when used with the full DCAEK on my FS9, I did not notice much (if any) tactile improvement on reset. It was more of an audible improvement. I have not tried the RAM with just the USB to see if that made a difference.

I agree. I'm not a fan of the RAM. It did nothing for me. But there are many others that claim to have benefited from it.

I bought a used RAM. Install was easy.

My reset is more positive.

I hope it improves my shoot ability with fast strings of multiple rounds (where prior...I could not feel the trigger reset)

Thinking about trying the USB next.

while the trigger press is not bad....I do see alot of front site wobble at trigger break due to the trigger stop being to far back.

I little OT is ok, but dont like the front sight to move when dry pressing.

may hit the classified for a used USB.

The Apex RAM is supposed to allow a more positive reset (felt) and a louder "click" at reset. The sound is of no importance in any handgun, as you can not hear it in any type of noisy environment.

The RAM does not shorten reset. The Apex trigger kit reduces the overall trigger sear pull, and cuts the reset by almost half, when including over travel. Using all the Apex supplied springs that come with their duty/carry kit, will net a trigger pull of 5 to 5.5 pounds. The average stock trigger pull is 6.5 pounds.
