Got my Shield 9mm barrel from Guns and Gear today. Now I can make the conversion of 40 to 9mm. I don't know where Guns and Gear is getting the barrels from, but I will bet it is the factory 9mm barrel. Maybe not purchased from S&W directly, but from a manufacturer of the Shield barrels. I spent many years in Mechanical Engineering and Tool & Die, and my stock Shield 40 barrel and the new 9mm barrel are identical except for the inside barrel diameter (should be different 9mm versus 40 S&W bullet) and the tab width, at the cartridge sight hole. All else is identical. I made a 10 minute video showing what others have already shown, except that I have made a couple of measurements and observations.

Had requests for Guns and Gear Outlet website: https://www.gunsandgearoutlet.com/default.aspx

I could not find the Shield 9mm barrel listed. I phoned them at 413 786-0100. Told them I had a Shield 40 and wanted to order the Shield 9mm barrel. I also ordered a 9mm mag.

Made a follow up call to Chris at Guns and Gear Outlet. He told me the 9mm barrels are S&W factory barrels. He said they buy them from Smith and resell to the public.

I guess this puts an end to what i was thinking in our PMs, lol

Good to know they are factory barrels. I'm still putting mine through the paces, and no problems so far.

Does anyone know if a New Shield 9MM Barrel has that slight left to right wiggle that is shown in the video? I was wondering if this only happens when putting a 9MM barrel in a 40 Shield or this happens not matter which version of the Shield you buy. I was just at the WPB Gun Show on Saturday and wish I had seen this video first. I would of checked it out on my own.

I believe he is referring to the 9mm placed into the .40 slide.

That is what I am referring to. Is the wiggle room the same in a 9MM slide with a 9MM barrel as it would be with a 9MM barrel in a 40 CA slide conversion. From what I have been lead to believe is that the slide is the exact same slide from S&W for both calibers. I am just wondering if that is true.
Can someone with a 9MM Shield check that out and verify that it does have the same movement as a 9MM barrel in a 40 CA slide as shown in the video.

The 9mm barrel in the 9mm slide is PERFECT, there is no difference between any 9mm Shield from the other 9mm Shield.

NO the slides are NOT the exact same size between 9mm and 40. You can look at my video I posted and I show you both guns, both slides, both barrels, etc.

PS: If the slides were the exact same size, the 40 barrel would fit into the 9mm slide. But this is not
the case.

OK, thanks. I misunderstood. I thought the slides were identical, but wasn't 100% sure. That is all I really wanted to know. I appreciate the great job you did with the video.
Thanks,
Rich

The slides are the same for the 9mm and 40 s&w. What they are pointing out is the back of the barrels are different.

There is a slight difference in the slides. The opening width for the top rear of the barrel is wider for the 40 than the 9mm.

Bob

Yea, sorry about that post. I was thinking about the overall size and machining of the slides. The width for the 9mm barrel is not as wide as the Shield 40.

XCUTTER reply

If I understand your question, the Shield 40 and the Shield 9mm have the identical same slides except that the width of the opening in the slide, where the top rear of the barrel seats when locked in battery. This area in the 40 slide is wider than it is in the 9mm's slide. This width I am referring to is the side to side distance of the opening in the slide, where the peep hole is, for seeing if there is a cartridge loaded in the chamber.

The 9mm and 40 barrels are identical in all dimensions, except for: 1. the bore diameter; 2. the tang/tab width, at the sight hole, at the top rear of the barrel. The 40's barrel tang/tab is .026 inch wider than the 9mm's. Since the width is also wider in the 40's slide, that is why the 9mm is a drop-in swap from 9mm to 40, but 40 barrel into the 9mm slide will not work unless the 40's barrel tang/tab is ground down thinner, just a little. Then the 40 barrel would fit in the 9mm slide.

See the attached photos.

Some other measurement I made. The width of the opening my 40 slide is .433. Therefore the side to side play with the stock 40 barrel tang/tab is .008. The play with the 9mm barrel should be .034, but in fact it is .025. The 9mm tang/tab stops the side movement one way, but the barrel is stopped by moving fully to the opposite side when the side of the barrel stop at the inside slide. Remember the barrels are exactly the same, except for the bore and width of the tang/tab.

Per my video and shooting results, the extra .017 (1/64 inch) side to side movement of the 9mm barrel, has no affect of the shooting groups. My 40 groups and 9mm groups were both within 3 inches at 15 yards.

I've made three phone calls to Chris, at Guns and Gear Outlet, asking about the Shield 40 barrel availability. He said they did not stock them but did not see any reason they could not order them, as they can order the 9mm barrels. He said he would check with S&W and for me to call back the next day. I called back and he said the S&W rep. has not got back with him. He would call S&W again. I called back a few days later and he said he again had not heard back from S&W, he would take my number and call me back. Thay was a week ago. Now I hear S&W is closed for nearly two weeks for the holidays. So I will call Chris back after the new year.

Give Chris a call after the holidays and touch base with him. They get a little busy over there due to soo many people wanting barrels and thats not considering the panic buying thats going on right now over the AW ban coming.

I'm sure Chris will figure it out for you. It's just a matter of him getting a little free time to check. As busy as all the places are around here, i can only imagine how busy they are also.

Been a long time but I spoke to Chris at Guns and Gear and he said he has got an order in for 40 barrels. He said he is presently out of the 9mm barrels. He is now waiting for S&W to ship him both the Shield 9mm and 40 barrels.
