Default Another Shield 40 QC Issue

First off, I am not a hater of this gun and have no interest in selling it. But am very concerned with QC issues at S&W as this was my first S&W. I bought a 40 Shield back in Dec as I couldn't find the 9. I'm happy with the feel and accuracy after shooting ~100 rounds of Federal 180 grain range ammo through it. However, I noticed the pin above the trigger was working it's way out. I tapped it back in and then shot another 50 rounds. It had worked it's way out again ~ 1/4 in. Sent it off to S&W who shipped it back with repair ticket stating they replaced the barrel stud and pins, range fired and passed spec's. Just got back from the range shooting another 100 rounds and the pin has now started coming out again !

So much for QC. Sorry for not knowing the part name, but posted pic's.

Called their QC dept to request another repair ticket and spent 30 minutes listening to a loop of their voice menu. So, I went online and emailed the QC department. Hopefully will have this resolved soon.

You sound "once bit, twice shy" on your post... and I don't blame you. Those who's Shields have flawless histories are apt to bristle at criticism. Any firearms manufacturer with a "high demand" gun will see an uptick in failed QC. I imagine S&W is not immune, especially with new "twist" on a tried and true M&P design. Just send it back again... because all it cost is time. My 40 is now dependable with >800 rounds, and the 9 was out on our range today with impeccable function.

The pin you circled is the steel coil pin used to secure the locking block inside the steel sub-chassis. The trigger pin is the solid pin to its rear.

Anyway, S&W has reportedly had a few instances where coil pins they use (vendor supplied) might have been enough on the small end of their diameter tolerance so that they eventually shifted under recoil. I've seen a couple (which I've replaced as an armorer).

It's annoying to have vendor supplied part, especially a pin (whether plastic or steel), create issues ... but it's been known to happen. Not just with the products of one brand of pistol, either.

This reminds me of when the stainless revolvers were coming into their own. You could not find a M60 anywhere and my department ordered new stainless revolvers to replace our worn M15s. The Range guys had to fix quite a few, and sent many back that they could not fix. I was fortunate enough to get one that worked right out of the box.

Fastbolt, thanks for the info. I can understand it shipping with this issue, but would have hoped they got it right when it was repaired. Hope it gets resolved this time. Does anyone know if they have lemon laws on guns like they do on cars ?

I posted a few weeks ago about this because my Shield did the same thing. SW mailed me two pins and I used the new one to drive out the old and so far it is ok

Default Another Shield 40 QC Issue

I have put 100 rounds through my Shield 40 and so far the pins look fine. I will keep my eye on them though

Default Same problem

I didn't see this post before I made mine yesterday but started browsing other similar titles. I have the EXACT same issue. Took a 40 on trade and took it shooting and after a few mags the pin was about 1/2 way out. Pushed it back in and a few more mags later the same thing. When I went home to clean it I realized the pin behind the safety has also started working it's way out.. what the!? I have fired thousands of rounds through my 9mm shield and not had one single issue of any kind. While you may like your 40 enough to keep it.. I'm selling mine pronto. Knowing that even if it gets fixed the problem most likely will come back.. no thanks! Sorry your having the same issue. Hopefully you'll find a 9 shield and love it as much as I love mine.
