Default Any Advice On M&P 9mm Tactical Lights?

Hi - I'm new to S&W, M&P 9mm pro CORE 17 rds. and new to tactical lights. Looking for recommendations, pros or cons, on good tactical light attachments (red dots, laser lights, flashlights, or whatever type there are). One that might mount closest in line with the barrel so I don't have to compensate too much. Also, long lasting battery. brightest light, etc (Everything, why not!?) I’ve been told best not to use a sight - learn to aim correctly from beginning - but I need sight for medical reasons. Thanks.

Default Any Advice On M&P 9mm Tactical Lights?

I put a crimson trace light guard (flashlight) on mine. It fits good and is very intuitive to use. I'm not against lasers, but I didn't want a lot of bulk at the bedside.

I use a Crimson Trace Rail Master red Laser on my M&P 9c. It fits perfectly and is low profile.

The S&W Micro 90 pistol light is designed for the M&P series guns. It's pretty inexpensive and seems to do the job with ambi controls for both intermittent and constant illumination. Midway has them for about $60.

I don't mount a light to my weapon, it's a gun, not a flashlight. Better to have a separate light IMHO as I don't like pointing a gun at things that I have not identified. I use a surefire Lumamax LX2 for my EDC needs.

Default Crimson Trace LightGuard and Laser

The CT LightGuard is bright, light, and very intuitive to operate by a pressure switch located directly under the trigger guard. There is also a slide switch if you do not wish to use the light.

I also have the CT Laser Grip which has a pressure switch on the backstrap (about the size of the M&P medium) and a laser on the top right of the grip just below the slide. Again, very intuitive operation, plus a shut off switch if desired. The laser comes on as you firm up your grasp on the grip.

If both the light and laser are on, they operate without having to fumble with anything in the dark or under a panic situation.

I have a Streamlight TLR-1. It is a good light for the money. I think I paid $90.00 for it on sale. It is plenty bright and mounts very solid. The biggest problem is that now I need to buy a new holster to fit the light and gun. I am looking at Bladetech they have about a 5 week wait.

I agree with Treiz to the extent that your primary light should be a handheld tactical flashlight, however, I believe having a backup light right on the gun can serve a useful purpose is many situations. This is why I like the Crimson Trace light. It adds very little mass to the gun, and becomes part of it. It is not a large, clunky light that has to be independently switched on. Grabbing the gun in a normal fashion turns the light on. Very intuitive.

Streamlight TLR-1 on the gun and a Streamlight Polytac LED next to it in the drawer. The Polytac is used to search and the TLR-1 is used to illuminate the target.

Although I recognize the usefulness of laser, I find most people use them for a crutch instead using the basics of marksmanship. I've seen too many people chase a target with the dot instead of using the sights.
