Did a little work to my M&P22 (safety and mag disconnect removed, hammer spring cut,

So i ordered a safety removal kit from Ryan ([ MADE BY RYAN JAY ] ) and while i was installing i decided to tinker with a few things.

removed the magazine disconnect so i could drop the hammer without a mag. pretty easy to do once you have everything out, just have to loosen the philips screw in the back so they disconnect would drop out. i have also been having an issue when using cheap bulk .22s (runs perfect with CCI minimags and AR tacticals). with a fully loaded mag the first round or two would either not eject or the slid wouldnt cycle all the way to reset the hammer. i think this is due to a combination of things. the stiff hammer spring, a dirty gun, underpowered ammo, etc. SO i cut two coils off the hammer spring in hopes it would lighten the pressure and allow the slide to cycle all the way back even with cheap ammo. gonna run a hundred rounds or so thru it soon to see if that helps.

if not im going to take out the hammer and polish it up as well as the block on the slide that resets the hammer.

and while i was had everything out i decided to give it a coat of Alumihyde in Coyote. Turned out pretty good but i can aleady tell its gonna get nicked and worn off. thats cool cause i like the worn out look.

Let us know if you get light strikes with the hammer spring cut. In looking at my fired cases, the hit doesn't look that hard to begin with. My Ruger 22/45 hits much harder.

i was thinking about doing the same thing but id like to locate a replacement spring before i do so. any leads besides from s&w?

I too think the hammer spring is too tight. Ever try racking the slide with a dropped hammer? It takes a great amount of force either due to a strong hammer spring or just due to lack of leverage where the slide block initially meets the midway height of the hammer. I would love to experiment with various hammer springs if I can find them. I was also worried about light strikes. It would be great if someone developed a progressive spring for the hammer that allows the slide to rack easier but still allow adequate strikes.

I also polished my hammer and slide block, which helped a lot. Also using frog lube, but I'm sure other lubes might be slicker.

Please let us know how the shortened spring works for you.

did you polish the whole hammer or just the face that strikes the block?

Only the face that contacts the slide. I started by filing a spent case so the rim cleared the extractor. This allowed me to dry fire and rack the slide on a dropped hammer continuously without having to replace the case to avoid dry fire damage. Applied some polishing compound and worked it over. Finished with various sandpaper. I did not dissassemble the frame. I could also see some wear marks on the side of the hammer where it rubs on the frame when cocked. I should do the sides too. I polished the bottom of the slide with thin strips of sandpaper and my finger. Would have been easier to remove the breach block from the slide but I didn't want to mess with that right now. I DO want to remove the mag safety like you did.

thanks for the info. when you have the guts out of the gun, one pin and loosen the back screw and the disconnect come out very easy.

I believe the bit that hits the firing pin is also the bit that rides the block back to cock so you have to be really careful not to change the angle too much... It seems that polishing the sides of the hammer did the most good...

I really would like to know what resultes cutting the hammer spring has on the overall operation of the gun. I was thinking recoil spring or cutting the slide to cycle lower power than mini mags rounds. I know for a fact that after I added a Leopold delta point to my gun it will function 100% with mini mags, but when I load federal bulk not enough power to cycle the slide to pick up the next round. Before the delta point it chewed up federal without a problem?
