I am in the process of buying a new handgun.
The last one I had was a S&W model 39 that was stolen from a building contractor I had at me home @ 1985.
I am a member of CalGuns web site and have only been interested in Sigs and Glocks-9MM.
Every once in a while someone says I should look at the MP.
I like the Glock because it is so simple to use.
I do not like the way it feels in my hand.
I like the Sig. I like the night sites. I like the way it feels in my hand.
I am curiuous about the MP's.
What do you think?

I think you should try out (shoot and handle) as many handguns as your interest and budget will allow, then make an informed decision based on your first-hand assessments. Best Regards, Ed

Smith and Wesson M&Ps are fine pistols. Police departments all over the world trust their lives with these. If I didn't already have a Glock 19 I would consider an M&P.

Like I tell all of those who ask, get an M&P .40FS because with just a barrel change you have a .357SIG and with a barrel and a mag change you've got a 9mm. 3 calibers with one gun! Besides it's an M&P! that says a lot right there.

Faithful, reliable, accurate, reasonably price...best bang for the buck out there IMHO. But, again, this is a S&W forum and get some honest but bias feedback. I'm inclined like others to say borrow/rent/take a class where you can shoot the FS 9, 40 and Compact 9 and 40 to get a fit and feel for you...you already know that I'm sure. Just my two cents. I agree that you should hit a range where you can shoot several models.

But check out the Smith SD line - very glock-like but, the feel in the hand is superior.

Look at the M&P compacts - with an x-grip adapter they take the FS mags, which is excellent for Home Defense; carry with the mags that come with the compact.

Check the SKUs on the S&W site for which ones have no thumb safety and no magazine disconnect. It will function the same as the Glocks in that respect. I like the M&Ps because they are very reliable, feel better in my hand, made in USA, look better.

I love the M&P line they are great pistols, reliable, accurate, and affordable. I was not a fan of S&W autos for a long time but when I was looking for a polymer FS 45 I checked out the Glock, XD, and the M&P. I have an XD9 and I really like it and the 45 was ok, The Glock felt like holding a brick to me but it has a great reputation, but when I picked up the M&P 45 I loved it. The ergonomics of these pistols is very good I think S&W did a great job of making a semi customized pistol via the interchangeable back straps so users with different hand sizes could make it work for them. I think it basically comes down to personal preference. If you can shoot them before you buy that is the way to go and then you can try them all and find what works best for you.

I would caution that if you are interested in the M&P 9 you need to start looking for magazines now they are hard to come by.

Whats a glock? I like Made in the USA S&W M&P40's. I have a 40 Shield, a 4.25" FS 40, and a 5" M&P40L CORE, do you see a trend here?

My first gun is a sig. I love the way it feels in my hand, I can shoot fairly fast and accurately with it. The only problem is the first DA pull is something you have to master and constantly keep training with in order to shoot fast and accurately from the draw. SA trigger pulls are a no brainer.

I then got a glock g23 which is an awesome, accurate and reliable gun. Like you, it does NOT fit well in my hand either. I have short fingers and it took quite a long time for me to get used to the grip angle as well as mastering the trigger to shoot well with it. I cannot however get as good a grip as I would like because I have to adjust my dominant hand grip in order for me to properly manipulate the trigger. Altho I can shoot it accurately and fast now, I am not very confident shooting it "cold" or from the draw.

I finally bought an M&P Full Size 9mm. It fits perfectly in my hand. I can easily get a consistent and proper grip while manipulating the trigger. I was able to shoot it accurately and fast right out of the box. I also got a brand new one which has a much improved trigger reset. After only putting about 300 rounds through it, I took it to a steel match and got 5th place (out of 15) in the production class. I've only been shooting for a little over a year and this was my first time shooting a steel match. The M&P performed perfectly for me and has now become my competition gun.

Like what most of the posters here have said before me, you have to really find the right gun for your body/hand/shooting style. Try the different guns out there and find the one that fits you the best. For me, I've settled on the M&P!

I had a Glock 23 & 21 & loved them. I thought there was no finer handguns available. Then I gave them to my son before WI had a concealed carry law. When the law came into effect I replaced the Glocks with a Sigma 40VE & the grip was fantastic & very natural feeling in comparison. Now I also have an M&P 40 as of Saturday & the grip is even better with the changeable backstrap (actually palm swell) & now I can't wait when my M&P 40C gets delivered.

The SD 9 or 40 great gun for the money but I do wish I had waited & spent the extra for a M&P9 or 40 c.

From a Novice's standpoint, if those 3 guns are the only alternatives offered under your guidelines I would seek out a Sig.
Glocks,while a able and proven firearm all have the same ergonomics.
The MP's have always struck me a the tall,plain girl at the dance....just as equipped as the Glock but rather retiring and uninspiring....
I would seek out a Sig,comes in many flavors,calibers,poly,alloy,steel and grips. Sexy and desirable,proven performance and reliability and an excellent resale value.....yes the initial search and investment is at times arduous and great but isn't anything that is worth it so?
