I've installed TFO's on most of my M&Ps. I can't say enough good about them. If you search here, you'll find I'm not alone.

I have left all my 4 of M&P autoloaders alone. Once their factory supplied tritium sights become too dim to be of practical use, I will consider replacing them. Right now I do not see the need to spend the extra money.

15 minutes if you use the proper tools.

However since you are asking the question I bet you do not own a sight pusher. DO NOT use a hammer and drift with any Tritium sights, you run the risk of dislodging or cracking the Tritium vial.

We have a Forum member that sells sight pushers in the FS area or most of the big ammo/parts supply houses have them as well.

If you like the TFO sights, I would recommend the TFX sights--improved design that fixed a couple of issues people had with the TFO's: tritium tubes now sealed better keeping solvents out and the tubes are not now prone to working loose and falling out over time.

I have the Truglo TFX on my Shield and love 'em--day and night.

Thanks for the replies and link. Doesn't look too difficult but I do not have the tool. I'll see what the LGS charges.

I have the "regular" TFX.
The orange ring on the front sight of the "pro" vs. the white on the "regular", the slight "u" notch on the rear sight and rear-sight angle change to provide for emergency one-handed racking of the slide are the differences.

At night, all you see is the glowing green tritium--you will not see any ring around the front sight (orange or white) at night that you would see around the front sight during the day.

One thing to note. Those FO tubes really capture ambient light during the day (thanks to the opening in the metal retaining structure). At night, they glow a nice reassuring green that can be seen easily. I might add I had absolutely no problem aligning the sights in a split second. Very natural and intuitive.

take a look at Trijicon HDs. I really like them. I like the bright orange front ring and basically a blacked out rear (during the day) with a U-notch. green tritiums for no-light conditions.
much smaller overall size than the TruGlos. But, honestly, between the Trijicons or TruGlos, those are about the 2 most popular sets of sights.

Love the TFO series of sights! They work day or night, period. Installation is a PITA, attempt no installation w/o a proper sight tool. Other than that, they are just the best sight out there. Fast AND bright!

Since you asked for opinions-
-you don't need night sights on a Shield.
-if it's dark enough to need tritium, maybe you shouldn't be shooting.
-it is highly unlikely that you will have a proper stance and sight picture during an encounter
-all of that money is better spent on ammo and range time
-night sights will not make you shoot any better, if anything they will be harder to use in lighted conditions which is pretty much the only condition you've probably ever shot in and ever will shoot in.

I'll put in my two cents.. during an encounter, I prefer a laser for two reasons...
-I want to put rounds on target as fast as possible from any position I find myself in.
-having done some target shooting with night sights at night, the muzzle flash made re-acquiring the target a little difficult to do quickly. For me anyway.

I have a set of the TFO on a pistol that I carry daily. Had them on about 90 days now. So far I am very pleased. They are holding up well to daily carry.

I like the sight picture they give me in daylight and low light as well. If they last a long time, TFO is a winner for me. Time will tell.

Don't have them on my Shield and don't personally feel moved to put much into the sights on that particular gun. My own idea of how my Shield might be used doesn't have me shooting it very great distance. The sights it came with are more than adequate for my use. YMMV.

I have both the TFO's and the trijicon night sites on a police trade from buds, these are both on S&W 40c If I could afford it the TFO's would get replaced by the trijicon, this coming from someone that has both and has shot both for sometime now. Trijicon wins hands down.

Thumbs up

I added Tru-Glo TFO night sights to my M&P 9 Shield and my M&P 9 FS and love them!! A lot easier to gain the sights in low light conditions and night time. Even work great during the bright daylight also. Highly recommend them to those of us that are getting a bit older and our eyes are not like they once were!!
