Default I'm considering a test...

I recently purchased an M&P .40S&W full sized gun. As much as I love tinkering, I have made no upgrades/changes to this gun; it is completely stock and will stay that way for now.

At the range I put 165 rounds through it quickly as a function test. Slide got hot enough that I couldn't do a proper chamber check. Total, I have a whopping 265 rounds through the gun. I have not experienced one malfunction and I have not cleaned it yet. So, I'm thinking of continuing not cleaning it just to see how far it will go before a malfunction.

A malfunction to me would be anything that stops the gun from firing. Fail-to-feed, fail-to-fire, fail-to-eject, fail-to-extract, broken part, premature slide stop actuation, something falling off, mag dropping out on its own, would all be considered a malfunction.

Am I crazy?

Not crazy, but S&W has put the M&P through worse trial tests than that. Not sure what it would prove. I clean mine every week or so and that equates to 1000 to 1500 rounds between cleaning. I'm sure it could go longer, and I don't go nuts with cleaning, just wipe off the black stuff, run a patch through the bore and inspect to make sure I'm not picking up any fouling (never do). The only failures I've had was one from a box of Federal with the primer in backwards, and another where the primer backed out partially. (not sure if that was me not getting the primer all the way in or it backed out in the mag from recoil. I suspect it was an error on my part. And that's been it. Don't know the round count, I can't count that high anymore, I forget where I'm at and have to start all over.

It does have a lifetime warranty and if its not your EDC or competition firearm, have at it. I've seen reports and photos of rounds in the thousands w/o cleaning and still going strong.

At about $.40 a trigger pull, your wallet may give out before the M&P

It will be fun getting there anyways.

My $.02 worth, keep us posted.

I'd like to suggest my own little personal reliability test. It is quick and cheap and very reliable.

Using your defensive ammo, fire the pistol weak hand, unsupported, very loosely held, and rotated 90 degrees counter-clockwise.

This type of grip allows the pistol to jump around, creates the so called "limp wrist" condition and invites the slide to catch the empties or to stovepipe jam.

If the pistol functions while held like I described you can count on it in a pinch. (after all the bad guy isn't going to wait for you to assume a nice tidy Weaver stance and lock your wrists, etc. under defensive conditions; instead, you'll be in a heck of a hurry to bring the pistol into action)

Carry out the test once with each magazine. That's all one needs to do to ensure that the pistol is street worthy.
