Bad Take Down Lever M&P 40c
Bought a new M&P 40 compact on 8/28/13. Came home from the range and found the take down lever broken off. Appears to have been cracked from the factory. I had purchased Gander Mtn's Firearms Protection Program so I will return the gun to them and let them deal with getting it fixed. Major bummer. May have to borrow a gun from a friend. Taking a Concealed Carry class on the 28th. I doubt mine will be back by then. The bad part is all his guns are Glocks. Oh well!!

Personally I would order the part from Midway for probably less than $10 shipped. Fix it yourself in a few minutes and shoot your own gun at your class. I don't like other people having my guns.

Midway shows out of stock. You can try calling S&W and see if they'll ship you a lever rather than return the entire gun.

Buying the protection plan from Gander for a Smith and Wesson is a waste of money. S&W has lifetime service policy.

I would let S&W just send you a new one. Send them a Email with the picture and they will send you a new one. I had the white dot fall out of my front sight, sent Email to S&W and the only response that I got and needed was they were sending me a new sight right out.
I think I would probably shoot the gun just the way it is. I don't think it would hurt anything but I am not sure. Some one else can probably advise better than me on that subject. I am still learning about my M&P only had mine 2 weeks now.
Good Luck

All the places with the part show it is on back order. I took the Gander deal because it was $29.95. If I ever have to send the gun in on my dime, it sounds like it would cost considerably more. I will talk to Gander tomorrow and then decide what the next step will be.

Best bet is to call S&W and ask them to send one. Their customer support is tops.
Also, Speed Shooter Specialties appears to have the part (M&P Takedown Lever) for $4.35. You could call them Monday and ask them to send it to you quickly -- they might be able to beat S&W by a day or two. http://www.speedshooterspecialties.c...ort=20a&page=5
The general consensus is that any new pistol should be cleaned before being shot. But you could wipe the bore, squirt some CLP in the gun, and go about shooting it -- it would probably function for quite a while -- without ever taking it down!
Finally, if you used a glove, you might be able twist that take down lever one quarter turn clockwise -- enough to take the gun down. I would not use a tool on it for fear of scratching the frame or the slide.
Good luck on this -- it shouldn't have happened, but M&P is still a great gun.

Weird, but weird things can happen with metal parts from time to time.
Call S&W and tell them what happened. I suspect they'd just send you the part under warranty. It costs less than $4 retail ($3.63, last I looked). Ought to be Part# 27761000
Tell them the gun's about to be used in a pending class & qual course and they might ship it faster.

From what I gather from other members,S&W pays for shipping for repairs. If I bought a different brand of firearm I might consider buying the plan but it's not worth the money to pay gander. just my 2 cents. I'm not knocking you for buying the plan, just not needed for a S&W firearm imho. I haven't had to deal with the excellent customer service from S&W yet, I hear they are awesome. I hope you resolve your issue and get back to shooting your M&P and keep us posted on your progress.

I'd call S&W and just let them know. I had polished the one that came on my 9c, but later wanted it black again. Instead of sending a tiny part back for a refinish they just sent me a new one for free.
Just shoot it as-is if you need to qualify for your ccw class.

Gander Mtn called S&W while I was at the store. S&W would not send just the take down lever. They wanted the gun so they could check that something else wasn't causing some problem with the take down lever. Told them we had pictures but they didn't care. Decided to send the gun back. It may or may not be back by the 28th. I will start practicing with a Glock from my buddy. Thanks for everyone's comments and thoughts on the issue.

Arrgh! Not most desirable solution, but the one Fate handed you. I wish you could have made GM trade it out for a new one! (IMHO, GM could even have pulled a take down lever off a new gun, given it to you, and then dealt with S&W themselves, on their own time).
In the long run, you will love your M&P -- more than a Glock. But in the meantime, good luck in the next shooting event!

Interesting thread and outcome... I was going to share my thoughts and suggestions, probably better I don't. It seemed like such a simple solution, if someone wanted a simple solution...

Exactly! That protection plan is good for a used gun they may sell that doesn't have a lifetime warranty. But that plan for a gun that is guaranteed for life is just a money maker for Gander Mountain. GARY

I was wondering if that might happen.
It's really weird for that part to break like that, and they understandably want to look at it.
Since they're not sending the part to a M&P pistol armorer, who could do a basic inspection for something else out-of-spec that caused the lever to break, it's reasonable for them to want to check the gun. That way if the broken takedown lever isn't the actual problem, but is only a symptom of another problem, they can identify it and correct it.
It would be really frustrating if the sent a lever and then that one broke, and cost you and them even more time. Let them check it out and make sure you're getting a gun that they intended for you to have, and you want to have, right?

Found another M&P 40
Seeing that my M&P40c was sent back to S&W to fix the broken take down lever, I have been using a buddy's Glock 23 and Glock 27. I have found I liked the M&P better so I ordered this today.
S&W M&P 40 Kit 40 S&W 4.25" 15+1 Interchangeable Gr $494.00 SHIPS FREE
I didn't think the price was too bad. It may be here late this week or early next week. Can't wait to shoot an M&P again.

You should really enjoy that kit, you could even buy a StormLake 9mm conversion barrel and shoot 9mm for a little cheaper if you wanted it would be like having two guns in one.

Nice. Now score a .40s&w Shield and complete the Holy Trinity of polymer hotness.

My order from Bud's Gun Shop finally shipped today. Should take two to three days to get to the FFL. Hopefully will have it by Friday and for my Conceal Care class on Saturday.
