so i was the one about a week ago posted about a new to me M&P

http://smith-wessonforum.com/smith-wesson-m-p-pistols/335010-new-m-p-owner.html

Well i shot a bowling pin match with it yesterday (won one round :D) and it did great. I started cleaning it this morning and got a knot in my stomach when i saw this

what are my options. I obviously need a new barrel, but i cannot afford some expensive match grade barrel. Also seeing as it is my carry gun, i need something fast. What is a "cheap" factory equivalent barrel i can get.

Seeing as i am not the guns original owner, im not sure S&W would even replace it, and from what i hear their wait times are 8-12 weeks right now and that just wont work.

hopefully someone can help.

Did you look really well at the barrel before you bought or shot it? Perhaps the crack is why it was sold off?

Try Midway for a barrel. I've had good luck with them.

yea i just found that, thats not bad. shame they are not stainless tho.

and no...i didnt check the barrel and probably should have but i personally have never had or heard of anyone i know having a barrel crack or break...so i didnt even think to look.

I'd call S&W. Tell them your situation. They may be able to get a barrel out immediately.

Worst case: Buy a barrel and then get a replacement from S&W for the cracked one. You can sell one of the barrels to recoup your costs.

I may do just that. i did order the factory barrel from midway already just incase since i need it ASAP. Ill see what S&W says when i call them tomorrow. Hopefully if they do replace it, it will be the stainless and i can send the other back to midway or sell it locally...kinda wish i could have gotten a 9mm barrel now knowing that so i could shoot that for practice haha.

Id just be worried they would probably want the old barrel to actually see it before sending a new one which could take a while, which is why i just decided to buy a new one.

Just a bit off topic but on the M&P barrels is it typical to have that little raised ring around the barrel approx 1/2" from the crown? I noticed that on my shield barrel and it freaked me out a bit but it looks like yours has it also.

It's normal. It helps center the barrel in the slide for accuracy, and the narrower part is necessary to allow the barrel to tilt and unlock. ;)

Ok cool thanks. I never noticed anything like that on my Xd, previous Glocks or Ruger I used to have so I just wasn't sure. It looked uniform around the barrel and not like some type of imperfection so I assumed it was part if the design. Thanks

I can't believe all the machining marks on that cracked barrel. Pukey quality control of the cutting tools. OK, now we need a S&W apologist to post that it doesn't matter because it is just aesthetic.

That definatley looks like a crack. Not a machined taper. Look inside aginst a light bulb background. You may see it there too...id send it back regardless.

Call S&W, get a shipping label, that is a drop in part, and they will want to see it. I doubt the wait will be very long.

Yea I'm in the process now but I did just order one from Midway because I needed something quick.

And I hope to hell its a stock barrel lol. I too was very surprised when I saw the high res photo and saw all the tool marks and chips.

It does look just like s&w's barrels tho with the dimensions

Smith & Wesson warrants manufacturing defects without regard to whether you are the original owner or not. A cracked barrel is most likely a manufacturing defect in the steel itself. They will most likely want to see the whole pistol but maybe they will take just the barrel. You have to visit with the customer service people by phone to tell.

Sorry, but this is not right. I used to think this as well, then I read the actual warranty:
This warranty is effective from the date of purchase and applies to the original owner of any firearm.
Look in your book, you'll see it there. It's pretty clear that it's just to the original owner.

Now, that doesn't mean they won't fix it. It's worth a call to find out. It's just not guaranteed if you're not the original owner.

I would bet S&W would replace it as well. It doesn't appear that the barrel was bulged or damaged by bad ammo causing the crack so it does look like a defect.

The firearm companies are some of the most upright people you could ever deal with and I'm sure they would rather replace that barrel than have you shoot it and take a chance that it could fail and cause injury.

I'd give S&W a call and ask if they want to replace it or if you should just keep shooting it as is.
