Default Recoil Spring Assy on Shield 40

I probably have 500+ rounds through it. Shot 50 rounds yesterday and today, when I broke it down to clean, the spring flew apart. Looking at the same assy from my FS 9, it looks like I am missing a small hex-head bolt that holds it all together at the muzzle end.

I've search all around here for the part, and I think it must have come out at the range. I know one thing, it is going to be one tough hombre to re-assemble -- those springs are STRONG.

I am wondering if my LGS will have the part or am I going to have to contact S&W? Also - has this ever happened to any of you?

I have taken the bolt out to change spring to a lighter weight.
Putting the bottom end of the guide rod in a soft-jaw vice simplifies the process.

Call S&W and they will either send you the screw or maybe the whole recoil assy. Unless they've run into this before I'd be surprised if your local gun shop would have it on hand.

Over the years I have needed a recoil assy for a Sig 220 [I lost it] & a Glock [I thought it was defective, but it wasn't], & in each case I called the factory, & they sent it to me for free. GARY

There are two springs involved, one is the large outer spring and the other is very stiff, small diameter that goes inside the guide rod, but sticks out quite far on the end. I think -- because I don't see any screw threads in the guide rod -- that they use the inside of the small spring as threads for the screw. Because of the opposing tensions on both springs, I cannot see any way of doing this job without it being a real knuckle-buster.

My LGS guy is a S&W certified gunsmith - so I think I will go see him first thing Monday and perhaps he has the screw and the tools to make it right.

I just got off the phone with S&W. Wait time to talk to a CS rep was only about one minute. Told him my problem, he put me on hold for about 30 secs, came back and said he had the spring assy in his hand and it would be out in the mail today.

Pretty da-gum good service IMO.
