Average cost of ammo for 9mm, .40 cal, .45 cal ?

Well I was always lousy at math and too lazy to whip out the calculator but lately I've been paying between $15-$16 a box of 50/9mm, around $20-$24 box of 50/.45acp, both from Federal, fmj 115gr in 9, 230gr in .45. 130gr fmj .38spl seems to be around $25/box of $50.

Walmart in western NC is $14-16 per 50 depending upon brand. 9mm
This is for target/plinking ammo. Anything self defense used to be $1 round but is now closer to $1.25 at any local gun shop.

You won't find self defense ammo at walmart and you won't find cheap ammo at the gun shops. Their cheap stuff is still in the $22-25 range.

The last time I bought 9mm it was $15 box.

This still seems to be the price.

I used to get it for $10-$11 before the run on ammo started.

I occasionally look at the prices at my LGS as I walk by to the range. 9mm is $15-$17/50 (plinking/target) and $20-$26/50 for better ammo. I load my target/practice/competition ammo for $6.50/50. Needless to say I don't buy much of the "factory made" ammo (actually none since I have around 3K that I bought before the current madness)

They do carry self defense ammo at WW, at least around here. Maybe not the best stuff, but they stock Winchester PDX and at least one of the Federal HP's.

Just got back from Walmart with a nice 9mm buy. 3 of the Federal 100 pks. Hard to get because the 100's are $26.77 and the 50's are $14.67.

The best prices I have found are online from Cabela's they have 50 rounds of American Eagle 40 S&W for $20.99, PCM Bronze for $19.99 for 50, Winchester for $37.99 for 100 but it is backordered. These are all 40 S&W since that is what I have two of.

Indiana. Im paying 15 for 50 rounds of cheap fmj 9 mm. Sometimes i can score 100 round box of federal fmj for 32.00.

Thanks everybody. I've searched the net but prices vary so much that I couldn't get a handle on an average. Also I posted the original thread late last night while in a post turkey delirium.
It seems that the general consensus is about 30 cents per rd for the 9mm assuming that you're going to use it for target shooting. More for a very reliable ammunition.
A couple of weeks ago I went to the range and test fired the M&P9. They didn't charge me anything to rent the gun (because I bought my .22 from them) but I had to buy their ammo at $24 for a 50 rd box. Thought that was a bit high at 48 cents per rd.
Right now it costs me 7.5 cents per rd (CCI mini mags) to shoot my .22. Thats about 4x less than the 9. I'm assuming that has always been the case and will remain the case.
I've checked the WM website and I see Federal Champion 9mm (100 rd count) in stock in some stores near me. Don't know the cost as they don't post that. I'll check next time I'm there.
In the meantime I've been finding plenty of CCI mini mags for my .22. I've stocked up a little under 2500 rds of them, plus a couple of bricks of Federal Target (325 ct) Not going to buy anymore as that will last me through the winter. From what I'm seeing, at least three stores within 20 miles of me have mini mags in stock today.
Last thought... I have considered buying the .40 plus the 9mm barrel to swap out. Don't know what the barrel and mags would cost and if it would be cost effective to me. I can pick up the M&P9 for $507 total at a small dealer in my city. Don't know what the .40 is but I assuming it's pretty much the same. Also, I think that the 9mm is plenty of gun IMO and has a recoil that I can control. Not has strong as I used to be. Age sucks
Thanks again. :) :):) Didn't mean to write a novel, but usually I'm on this forum at night with my ipad typing with one finger. Right now I'm on my computer. Can type much faster.

Looks like you're better off buying two 50rd boxes at 30 cent per rd as opposed to buying one 100 rd box at 32 cents per rd.
I can't shoot but I can do math. (no offense meant) :):):):)
Opps, just had a thought. That's why I edited this post.
Maybe you're on a box limit where you're buying and therefore willing to pay a little more so you can obtain more ammo. If that's the case. My bad.:o

I hate math in public. No matter how hard I work at it, I usually get it wrong. So, let me say it this way:
I can get 1,000 rounds of 9mm 147gr cartridges shipped to my door for ~$260.

www.gunbot.net

Go to http://www.gunbot.net , select your caliber, sort by "price per round" and click on the box for in stock only. Makes comparison shopping for ammo quite simple.

If you need the cost per round more precisely, go to the actual vendor site and do a dummy order, which will add in shipping and tax, if collected.

I usually buy 9mm 100 round Winchester target ammo for $24, and then 100 round 40 S&W for $36. The hornady critical defense costs me $19 for 20 rounds

So $.36 per 40, $.24 per 9mm and about $.95 per self defense ammo

Hey, thanks. I looked at the site. I'll give them a call and see what kind of ID they need. Maybe a copy of my DD-214. BTW. I read your post about your lake episode. Maybe you should change your name to
truck-n-lake :D

In reality. The BG isn't going to know if you shot him with "cheap" ammo or $5.00 ammo... or care what brand. Reliable ammo is the bottom line.
