OK. Just started shooting about a month ago. Bought a M&P22 to learn with and will move up to something bigger in a few months.
Most certainly another M&P.
I'm trying to figure out the avg cost per rd for the larger calibers.
I'm sure you Veterens shooters could quote this off the top of your heads.
BTW. Great forum. Lots of info & humor.

9mm is the cheapest of the 3 next the 40 and then 45. if I remenmber right you could by 250 rd packs of Remington umc target ammo for like 50 or so dallars 40 was like 60 and 45. over a 100 dollars now defense ammo is all going to be about a dollar a round no matter what it is in all the popular semi calibers since the big run on ammo prices are going up.

Well, I guess it depends on personal situation, but:

My range membership here in Tampa is $29.95 a month. I typically go twice a month, and shoot 100 rounds each time, at about $15 per box of 50.

So that works out to about 0.45 a round, if I did the math right.

for what caliber

D'oh! Sorry...this is for 9mm.

ok yeah 9mm is the cheapest I like the 40 way better but right now all I have are 357. revolvers x2 and one 45 revolver seems like when the whole run on ammo was going on I only saw 40 no 9 mm or 38 357 .

Consider an M&P 40 for your next gun.

You can drop in factory 9mm and .357 barrels and shoot whatever is available.

Assuming full metal jacket "hardball":

When it is on sale:
(9MM) $20/50
(.40 S&W) $25/50
(.45 ACP) $28/50

You must be remembering the "good old days." Right now a decent price on those same packs is about $70 for 9mm, $90 for .40, and $120 for .45. Even at Walmart price the .40 UMC is $80/250 and Gander wants $109. These days I figure any decent 9mm at $15/50 is pretty good.

I did see 250 packs of 9mm target ammo stacked up on a pallet at the Gander Mountain that just opened here in Tampa this past weekend. They had it priced at $79.99 and when I stopped by again on Monday night, still had plenty of it. So that would be $0.32 a round.

Scheel's in Utah about one month ago had American Eagle 115 grain fmj 9mm for $12.99 for a box of 50 or .26 per round.

Prior to Sandy Hook it was common to pick up S&B and Federal 9 mm for $9.99 per 50 rounds or .20 each.

I am encouraged to see more 9mm on the shelves and prices dropping back down.

22 LR is still high due to hoarding but eventually supply will catch up and prices will drop.

our public education system at work....:D......go shoot some more....you are only paying .30 per round...:p

A dollar a round or more is what it costs. Lets forget about the cheap underpowered plinking ammo. Like the police, we should practice with what we carry or keep in our pistols for home defense. Premium effective name brand hollow point ammo costs approximately a dollar a round or more. A dollar a round is pretty expensive in my book.

You need to shop around more and find better options on prices. A $1.00 a round is way too high for handgun ammo. I',m not even paying that much for rifle ammo.....

$89.95/200=0.4498.

What am I missing?

I see! You're figuring in your range time as a cost per bullet also.

Did you include taxes? Gas to get there? Snacks?

If you figure it that way, and only shot one round, your cost would be about $60 per round!!

Oh, and you could probably figure in maintenance supplies, and amortize the cost of the gun over its life in rounds.... UGG!!

Best to just buy at the best price you can and shoot as often as you are able!! ;)

Uh, ok. OP asked for cost per round. That is how I figure my cost per round. YMMV.

Have a question for you.

If a bat and a ball together cost $1.10, and the bat costs a dollar more than the ball, how much does the ball cost?

:D

Haven't bought any 9mm ammo for quite a while now. Reloading is the way to go IMO. I was stocked up before all the run on stuff and so using my iPhone app (hand load) rounds are costing $0.12/ea.
