Good day all, I just picked up my M&P 9mm yesterday and I discussed the cleaning of it with the very knowledgable girl behind the counter. She recommended Wurth brake and parts cleaner to de grease the gun the use Wurth Rost off to clean that up and lube only the recommended lubrication points with my Hoppes #9 gun oil. This is my first hand gun and I have read lots of bad things about using brake cleaner on a polymer frame. Any thoughts or opinions?

I would not use those products on my handguns! M-PRO 7 will cut the oil and grease and it is odorless and non toxin. I also use their oil.

Hoppes #9 gun oil consists solely of white mineral oil. You could just get it at the pharmacy section at wal-mart if you really wanted to use mineral oil.

Brake cleaner is some extremely nasty noxious stuff and I've never understand why people use it on guns, especially indoors. There are plenty of non-toxic gun cleaning products out there that work well free of neurotoxins, carcinogens etc. There's simply no need to make you or your family sick.

Smith & Wesson customer service once told me they use M-Pro 7. Hoppes Elite is pretty much the same thing and the same company(pantheon chemical) makes both products. You'll find lots of other "non-toxic gun cleaners" out there if you google it.

Don't. For one thing, you will damage the damper inside the trigger spring, that keeps it from breaking with harmonic vibrations.

Never use brake or carburetor cleaner inside your M&P. If you want to clean out the frame assembly, CRC silicone will work as well as any, and only leave a fine white powder of silicone behind. Lube per manual, and do not spray oil into the gun. Oil or grease in the striker channel will cause misfires.

Be sure to disassemble and clean your magazines. Wipe DRY and reassemble. No oil.

I like Frog Lube on my firearms. (don't want to start a "what's the best lube" argument, just saying what works for me). I used to use various solvents. Now FL has come out with a solvent. It works better for cleaning than just using their CLP, then I lube the contact points after the solvent FrogLube 8oz Solvent Spray Bottle

M Pro 7.

We used brake and carb cleaner on our machine guns and i always hated it. Talk about a noxious gas filled room!

Without Life there can be no Liberty.

Strange advice. Use Hoppes No 9 solvent to clean the bore and Break Free CLP for lube.

Most Walmart carry break free powder blast (for cleaning) and CLP or quality gun oil, this products are made specifically for firearms.

I wouldn't use any type of brake cleaner on any plastic. But I always use it to clean the slide. Wurth products are very expensive, & not worth the extra price. Wally World sells their own brake cleaner for under $3. Just cleaned my UZI today with the stuff. GARY

Thanks for all the advice. Looks like I will be picking up some M Pro 7.

I've been using several different oils lately. Ballistol, Remoil and Froglube. Remoil I've been using since it first came out and it is a good cheap oil that won't clog or gum up.

I use WD40 to initially clean my guns, spray it on, maybe let it soak a bit, tooth brush, compressed air. Cleans everything, leaves a light coating. Oil, grease as needed.

She is very knowledgeable and is one of the best people to talk to about guns in our area. I was just looking to get some second opinions especially since this is my first hand gun and one with a polymer frame. I will use the brake cleaner and Rost off only for vehicle purposes.

You're getting good advice here. Do not use brake cleaner!

Folks have given you good recommendations for cleaners and oils. I used to use CLP exclusively, but limit it's use for lube at the range. I use Hoppes solvent and oil now to clean then lube.

I also use grease on my Sig rails and AR bolts, but that's a different conversation. Polymer guns are treated with Hoppes.
